New Amsterdam: Maybe Tomorrow (2022)
Season 5, Episode 7
10/10
Powerful episode. Leave politics out of reviews.
3 November 2022
To all the people who are trashing the show because of its political leanings -- change the channel if you don't like what you see. Simple. No one is forcing you to watch anything.

Definitely a difficult, and often frustrating, episode to watch. Yes, the show is largely targeted to a left-leaning audience - but aren't most TV dramas these days?

In my opinion, "New Amsterdam" is one of the only shows worth watching on TV right now. Its characters are complex and diverse, plots are well-developed, and the acting is outstanding all round.

Bravo to all involved on this incredible show and keep it up!

Entertaining but sloppy
10 September 2021
I certainly preferred the original Broadway musical to this film adaptation.

I found the beginning of the movie to be too sudden and choppy, and the editing to be quite abrupt at times.

It was often cringe-worthy when characters started to sing after or in between dialogue (ex. "Waving Through a Window" and "Words Fail") which could have been avoided.

However, I enjoyed the acting (especially from Platt, Dever and Adams who were expertly cast) and I felt the visual elements helped move the story along quite well.

Standout numbers in my book included the upbeat "Sincerely Me" and the heartbreaking "Requiem."

Overall, "Dear Evan Hansen" was entertaining and well-acted, however it felt sloppy and rushed at points compared to its stage counterpart.

Average Thriller

Other than an excellent performance by Aaron Eckhart, there is nothing special about this movie. Decent conspiracy theory plot. A decent way to pass the time.

Juliette Binoche is brilliant!
26 September 2020
This film is purely meant to entertain, and that it does! While it won't be winning any Oscars this year, it will certainly bring a smile to your face! One of Juliette Binoche's most interesting roles in recent years. Take a chance on this one! You won't regret it.

Frances McDormand is a genius!!
13 September 2020
This film left me speechless. Words cannot capture what a beautiful, unique, touching, reflective film this was. I have not seen a film I loved this much in a long time.

Frances McDormand is a genius. She blends into her role so effortlessly that you hardly feel as though you're on a journey with a fictional character.

The cinematography is stunning, and all of the actors are perfectly cast. Everything - from the music to the editing - is a masterclass in the art of filmmaking.

If Nomadland does not sweep up at the Oscars...something is wrong with the world.

Find a way to see this film! You won't regret it

The only bad thing? Brie Larson's hair...

...and the fact that this film didn't get more love from the critics. This film shines a light on the people wrongly convincted on death row, and how one hard working, determined individual can change things for the better. Great acting all round, and an excellent score. A must watch!

Hauntingly Beautiful - with a Shocking Finale!!!
15 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"The Song of Names", directed by the wonderful François Girard, surpassed all of my expectations! The story is about the relationship two "brothers", and how that relationship changes over the years as the mystery unfolds. The score, by the great Howard Shore, expertly showcases the film's haunting, mysterious tone. Acting, directing and cinematography, to name a few, were all brilliant. Certainly worth a watch, even if just for the magnificent violin solos! The film catches your attention from the very first scene and leaves you wanting more after the shocking finale. I would recommend this film to musicians, as well as anyone who loves a good character-based mystery!

"On the Edge of Glory...!"
23 August 2019
"After the Wedding" (directed by Bart Freundlich) was a pleasant surprise, to say the least! I walked in without knowing much more aside from its stellar cast, including Julianne Moore (one of my all-time favourites), Michelle Williams, Billy Crudup and Will Chase. At first glance, the film may resemble a romantic comedy, or a family-drama, however "After the Wedding" does not quite fit into any one category. This movie is certainly not "Father of the Bride" or "Four Weddings and a Funeral", although an early scene comically shows Julianne Moore singing along to Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory" in her car. As the title suggests, it is after the wedding that the plot thickens. The brilliant, suspenseful music by composer Mychael Danna greatly contributes to the film's tone and style. While sometimes predictable, there are numerous plot twists and turns that will keep your eyes glued to the screen. The acting, directing, cinematography, and set design were all top-notch. The film has a very independent, professional feel to it, which is such a welcomed change from all of those Marvel blockbusters out there. I would recommend "After the Wedding" to anyone looking to take a chance on something different, something thought-provoking and intelligent. Do not miss this film!

Rebel Wilson Needs a Better Movie!!!
12 June 2019
"Isn't It Romantic" is a film that doesn't quite dive deep enough into its premise.

It's sold as a romantic comedy for people that don't like romantic comedies. People that think romantic comedies are full of cliches such as meet cutes, kissing in the rain, a girl changing her looks to be with the perfect guy, etc.

The cliches are endless, however "Isn't It Romantic" only shows a mere few.

Rebel Wilson stars as Natalie, a boring, everyday girl, who hates, despises even, romantic comedies due to a reality check her mother had given her when Natalie was young.

After heading home from work one day, Natalie gets mugged, and while trying to escape the attacker, she hits her head on a post, knocking her out.

She comes to the realization that she has somehow been transported into a romantic comedy movie, herself in the leading lady role.

Natalie struggles with being sane throughout the cliches around her: karaoke dance numbers, a flamboyant male best friend, a normal co-worker who is actually her true love, etc.

Although this may sound like comedy gold, the movie is hardly a comedy. A few jokes here and there worth laughing at, but not nearly enough, especially with the hilarious Rebel Wilson in the lead.

The supporting cast are mediocre at best, no one memorable or worth noting. However, I'm not sure any cast could have saved this movie.

Unlike Any Other
21 May 2019
The Seagull, while imperfect, is a beautifully crafted film. It takes the challenge of transposing a Chekhov play into a screenplay, and does so very well. The cinematography is breathtaking, the scenery bringing out the dramatic undertone in each scene. The roles are perfectly cast, especially the wonderful Annette Bening as Irina and Saoirse Ronan as Nina. This film deserves a watch for anyone looking for something unique, well-acted, character-based and innovative! Don't let the negative reviews throw you off!

The Great Beverly Hofstadter!

This was a great, heart warming episode. Always nice to see the stern, cold, sarcastic Beverly return! Hopefully the show will continue producing more high quality episodes until the end. Don't miss this one!

Headed in the Right Direction
5 April 2019
I was debating whether to even watch this episode as the past two were pretty terrible, however I'm glad I did. The show was back to its intelligent, character-oriented self, for the most part. The cartoons are annoying and don't contribute to the appeal of the show. It was nice to see Marissa in a main plot line for a change. Still more Diane-centered plots needed! Don't give up on this show yet!

Critics Fell Asleep At The Wheel!!!
1 April 2019
Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool is a beautifully crafted tribute to the complicated life of Oscar-winning actress Gloria Grahame. The film is based off a memoir by the real life Peter Turner, who was Gloria's much younger lover.

One day, before heading on stage for a play, Gloria Grahame (played with such elegance and wisdom by my favourite actress, Annette Bening), collapsed. Grahame's ex-lover Peter Turner (played by the great Jamie Bell) is informed that Gloria has 'gas in her stomach' that has been bothering of her for awhile. Gloria's condition is certainly worse than gas. Gloria tells Peter to bring her to his town of Liverpool, England. She can get better there. Gloria is taken care of by Peter's kind family including his stubborn mother Bella (Julie Walters) and his loyal brother Joe. Peter and Gloria's relationship is tested when Gloria refuses to see a doctor, as her condition turns severe.

The film is quite entertaining, nearly impossible to take your eyes off the screen. It is packed full of a wide range of emotions translated on screen by the exceptional actors all around, beautiful score and set design, and a wonderful story. The film stays quite true to the book, which was almost written as though for the screen.

This film was greatly overlooked by critics, as it should have sweeper up numerous awards. There is not a thing I would change about the film, my expectations were blown away!

Grahame's story is one of the most beautiful and tragic I've encountered and it deserves an audience!

More Diane Lockhart!
29 March 2019
This show has gone downhill with these last two episodes. Michael Sheen's character is not necessary, but his scene with Diane was decent anyway. The excessive swearing is not needed. The show has gone too much into dealing with Trump and we hardly see the lawyers working on actual cases. Diane is the main character and is hardly seen the whole episode! This show is in need of better writers!

Just The Movie We Need
24 March 2019
While Captain Marvel is not quite groundbreaking, except for that it's the first Marvel film with a female lead, however it's not meant to be. It's meant to be a film that entertains, takes its audience away from reality for two hours.

The special effects and cinematography were very well done. The settings were well established, and my eyes were glued to the screen. The film had one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard, which beautifully compliment the film's style.

The plot was possibly more confusing than it needed to be, but it was still well thought out and, for the most part, the characters were strong, intelligent, brave people.

My only complaint would be the casting decisions. I found Brie Larson to be expressionless and monotone, and I felt another actress such as Emily Blunt or Anne Hathaway could have played the role with much more personality. Jude Law also seemed out of place, his character remains unconvincing and boring throughout the movie. On the plus side, I absolutely love Annette Bening, and I felt her role suited her uniquely soothing voice and her ability to play strong, intelligent, brave characters. Samuel L Jackson and Clark Gregg provided some great comic relief!

If you are on the fence whether to see this movie, I say go for it! If you want a movie that will entertain and make you smile, don't miss Captain Marvel!

Green Book (2018)

"Kentucky Fried Chicken! In Kentucky! When's that ever gonna happen?!"
30 January 2019
Green Book

Rating: A-

Green Book is a rare style of film these days in Hollywood. It's a drama, without being unrealistic and drawn out. A comedy, with a sincere, very relevant message.

Set back in 1962, we meet Tony Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen), an impulsive, profanity using, Italian-American bouncer living in New York. After he loses his job, he gains an interview with Dr. Shirley (Mahershala Ali), an enigmatic, African-American pianist, who offers Tony the task of driving him around from gig to gig. The problem being that Dr. Shirley was to be playing down south, where people were not as accepting of his race. Tony agrees, even though the job will require him to be absent from his wife Dolores (Linda Cardellini) and his two young sons.

Tony and Dr. Shirley seem opposites in many ways, however they are both outcasts, and use their differences from the normal folk to connect with each other. Through the movie, Tony becomes more accepting of people that may have seen worlds apart to him before, and he becomes protective of Dr. Shirley, and strives to become more in touch with his emotions. Whereas Dr. Shirley realizes just how different he is from most African-Americans at that time, him being a rich pianist with no wife or children to take care of. With Tony's influence, Dr. Shirley also becomes less uptight and willing to let loose every now and then.

Green Book has something for everyone and deserves all the awards attention it has been getting. Don't miss this wonderful movie!

Danny Collins (2015)

A Movie For Anyone That Loves John Lennon
28 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"What do you think about that, Danny Collins"

John Lennon's words changed Danny Collins from a selfish, spoiled, cowardly man, to a considerate, wise, determined man. Was it too late?

Danny is a substance abusing, alcoholic, aging rockstar with one Rod Stewart-like song titled 'Hey, Baby Doll'. His fans are older woman who can hardly stay awake until the end of the show. He has no children, only a gold digging, unfaithful wife, Sophie, who is young enough to be Danny's granddaughter. Danny has only one friend, his manager Frank, a sarcastic, former alcoholic, now sober thanks to Danny's efforts.

At Danny's birthday party, Frank reveals he'd discovered a letter John Lennon had written to Danny at the beginning of Danny's career, which neither Frank nor Danny had known about. John Lennon explains that fame has no impact on who you are as a person. It's all up to the individual to stay strong and stick true to their craft.

Danny takes these words to heart, only wishing he'd known about the letter sooner. If so, maybe his life would have turned out differently.

Danny decides it's time to finally pay a visit to his son, Tom Donnelly, whose mother only knew Danny from a one time thing at a concert. Danny checks in at a small New Jersey Hilton not far from where his son lives. Danny quickly charms hotel staff, especially the practical-minded, almost age appropriate Mary, the hotel's manager.

When Danny arrives on Tom's front porch, Tom's wife Samantha answers, glad to finally meet her husband's father, but knowing Tom will not be so accepting of Danny.

Tom is angry with Danny, saying he has no interest in having a relationship with his father.

However, Danny doesn't give up. He uses every resource he has to locate a special school for Tom's young daughter Hope, who has severe ADHD and trouble focusing in a regular school system. Danny gains Hope's acceptance at a special school for kids like Hope, winning some respect from Tom. Shortly after, Tom reveals to Danny that he has cancer. Danny remains optimistic throughout Tom's treatments, and sticks by his son's side, for the first time.

Danny Collins is one of the rare movies where I wouldn't change a thing. The actors are charming, believable, and seem to genuinely enjoy their experience on the movie. The writing and directing by Dan Fogelman of 'This is Us' is practically flawless. The music, made up of an emotional score, original songs, and the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack of John Lennon's masterpieces, wonderfully complements the movie's feel-good tone.

Danny Collins is a rare gem of a movie that needs to be seen.
