Plus One (2019)
Relatable, funny, and accurate taking on dating as a young adult
One of the strongest elements of this film is how accurately it portrays what its like to date your best friend as a young adult. At first, the two leads might not seem like a match made in heaven, but as the plot develops and they become best friends throughout the film, the audience starts to root for a relationship between these two best friends because it just makes sense: they are great company for each other are going through the same turmoils and struggles in their young adult life.
The unique dynamic between this eccentric girl and this more reserved guy is refreshing and has audiences rooting for a relationship between them. Maya Erskine's physical and blunt comedy paired with Jack Quaid's minimal and deadpan comedy leaves no dull moments in their interactions. And the climax of the movie is one of many moments of great acting by Maya Erskine.
The strength of the relationship between these characters is so great that no matter which way the ending went, it still makes for a heartwarming, funny, and authentic dynamic that is relatable and worth a watch.
If you're in the mood for a more bare bones and close-to-home take on romance between young professionals, Plus One is a must-see.
Rust Creek (2018)
Fantastic thriller
This film is a great take on the "lead character gets stranded" narrative that we often see in thrillers.
The most wonderful part about itais the acting. All of the actors did such a fantastic job it is hard to believe the circumstances in the film are not their real lives. Hermione Corfield is fantastic for this kind of raw-no bells and whistles-realist kind of character. The gruesome scenes were really well executed, and give you that kind of "gross but i can't stop watching feeling". After these scenes, it's hard to not want to find out how this girl gets herself out of this terrible situation. The cinematography captures beautiful images and really gives you a feel of what its like to be in this creepy tiny town.
I wish the sherrif's involvement with drug trafficking and desire to "beat the mexican cartel" was delved into more. However, this film has no shortage of raw relationships between characters and a powerful desire for survival from the lead.
About Time (2013)
Wonferful
"About Time" takes a simple life lesson: "live every day of your life to the fullest"; and creates a wonderful love story that explores this message, expands it, and makes you reconsider the truly important things in life. This is not only a romatic love story, but it is a familial love story, and a self-love story. Domnhall Gleeson's character takes us through a touching journey of insecurity, determination, and self-realization. The film is shot in a very simplistic manner that makes the audience feel like they are in the streets of London as the two main characters fall in love right next to them.
The Favourite (2018)
great
Although this is an original screenplay, it mimics the tone of a live play so well that it is the most well-done play-like film I have seen. The characters are so interesting, lively, and funny, that the restoration period dialogue and unfamiliar circumstance are easier to digest. The film was shot and edited to maintain the structure of play, with a fishbowl sense and clearly marked acts, but the storyline is tight enough for a film that it doesn't need this imposed structure, although it doesn't do the film harm.
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
OK
Lin Manuel Miranda is by far the most interesting aspect of the film, and more screentime for him would've done the film a huge favor. The musical numbers were quite entertaining although not mind-blowing enough to counter the one-dimensional and stale performance that Emily Blunt gives in the film. Unfortunately, this film does not do the character of Mary Poppins justice as a stern yet whimsical and loveable babysitter. Rather, she comes off as quite fed up with most things in life.
Coco (2017)
Fantastic
An unapologetic celebration of Mexican traditions, "Coco" will be a wonderfully touching and tear-jerking story for anyone who values relationships between elders and their younger relatives, following through on your dreams, and fighting for the happiness of the ones you love. Every character is charming and great to watch; and the soundtrack elevates the entire film.
