God of War (2018)
Blockbuster Game! Worthy of a
This game is a great example of how "Gaming" is more than just a hobby - it is also blockbuster entertainment! It is a single player game which is extremely immersive. It is also a storyline game, which means there is a start, a journey & an ending. And what a great story!!! The story line, mythology, wonderful voice acting and character development all make this a game worth of the number of positive reviews.
This game will be loved by all those who have followed Kratos's (main character) journey thus far... but even better... this game is excellent introduction for those who don't know Kratos (God of War) as well.
"Full" Fantasy and/or Sci-Fi games are not often "my cup of tea". Without having some anchor to reality (elements of realism) to relate to, I cannot empathise with the characters or become immersed in the story as quickly as I should and I lose interest. Which is why, like a lot of others, I gravitate to games like - Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto.V & Assassin's Creed. These games may be pure fiction, however, a number of the fundamentals are still 'real' like - such as places, maps, historical context, tools, equipment & 'human' character elements.
Previous God of War games - I appreciate how good it they were, but, I just couldn't jump at the 'full fantasy' mode and it would become almost a chore to finish. They were good, but never my favourites.
This wasn't the case with this game. Kratos himself was more 'human'.... and someone who was easier to relate too. The relationship with parent and child is something a lot of people can relate too and it adds a degree of "risk". Kratos, now has something to lose, or something that when it becomes too annoying you can't just kill it! Kratos, becomes..... dare I say.... a little more cautious. (Like us mere humans would be).
I shared the gameplay with another (we took turns) and got so caught up simply 'watching' the game, listening to the 'in game' stories/conversations, that I often forgot to take my turn!
Nice side quests and collectables for those of use who like to be rewarded for 'exploring', however, nothing you can get completely lost in and forget the storyline all together.
Visually stunning - just the scale and little details. So overall a Great job and congratulations to the Game Developers!!
God of Water (2018) is definitely a favourite, a recommend & one for the collection! :)
Archer (2009)
Incredibly naughty, cheeky & witty in a way that I shouldn't, but honestly very much do, love!
I understand that viewers will either love ARCHER, or not. The reason, in my experience, is the aversion of animation (cartoons) aimed at adults. For some, it simply isn't appealing. If no matter my argument, you cannot get past the fact it is an animated show not meant for children... then stop here. It's not for you.
I first described this show to my sister as...
"imagine if the cast from the TV show Firefly were a) animated, B) place on a set of a classic James Bond film, & C) given permission to reference our best pop culture & tell dirty jokes... it's just so cheeky/naughty that you shouldn't laugh, but cannot help it"
"It's doesn't shove crude wording or blatantly offensive jokes down you're throat, but instead comes off as - terribly cheeky".
Unfortunately, I lost her at animation. :(
She dislikes anything animated that isn't Disney, Pixar or WB - because for her - animation is NOT for adults. While adult references may be hidden in Classic children's stories (to make it bearable and entertaining for the suffering parents who must chaperon the children) - ultimately - animation is not meant for 'Adults' in her opinion.
Thankfully, she understands that there are some of us (me) who can and do enjoy entertainment - in any form - as long as it is good.
AND I LOVE IT!!! I am in many ways very much your standard Adult - I have even been accused of being too responsible & grown up. I heard "13 going on 30", 16 going on 60, 18 going on 80, just recently my niece called me ancient! That there is no longer a "Count" for the Age I am... & that science herself will continue to develop new terms to track my Age. (Bless my niece)
So this is my review:
If you have enjoyed animation aimed at MA15+ crowd, then you will enjoy this too.
If the idea of a TV Show which was born from parent TV Shows Firefly & The Office sounds mildly intriguing - than definitely add this to your 'must watch' list.
His Girl Friday (1940)
I am unsure how this movie works its magic...
A story of love, comedy, action, suspense & tragedy. All told in one busy day! The story is set in the chaotic world of newspaper reporting. Ms Russell's character is desperately trying to leave behind her career as an extremely talented 'Girl Friday' and to embrace her future as a doting & loving wife. To do so, she must outsmart her cunning, quick-witted ex-husband (Gary Grant) who, as her manager, assigns her to report on the crime story of the century.
To stay and report the story could save a man's life, but the delay could cost her her future happy home life with her new honest & simple fiancé.
Cary Grant is at his finest. It's easy to get swept up in the story and invested in the Characters. Well worth a watch if you enjoyed 'Intolerable Cruetly' (movie). A fast-paced comedy.
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011)
Historical Blood-Action Drama. Looking back, the best way forward.
Knowing, I was worried about the fate of SPARTACUS. But 'Gods of the Arena' didn't disappoint. We are given further insight into some of our favourite characters with focus on the rise of the Ludas. The quality acting & a story which is delivered at a faster pace enthrals the viewer. It left me wondering - In a room full of villains, is our bad guy just an ambitious man?
Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010)
Historical Blood Action-Drama. Worthy of the title SPARTACUS.
Season 1 & Gods of the Arena will be added to my collection. An action-packed series, well worth a watch. My love for the characters often distracted from the stories progression. Think 'Sin City' meets 'Gladiator.' If you enjoyed '300' - then this saga is a MUST. Just take it a season at a time.
The Magnificent Seven (2016)
A modern day spaghetti Western!
I am a fan of westerns! Anyone who is a fan of Westerns knows just how many good westerns are out there compared to "all" westerns out there in the world. So finding a good one - mark it - keep it - love it! So this movie is a must for any "Western" fans out there. I would suggest watching the old one first - because after all this is a remake! And a remake of a movie which, when it was made, followed a different formula to today's westerns. So please do not expect to see 'an Oscar winning drama which delves deeply into the mind of a desperate man during desperate times' - because this isn't that type of western. It's a spaghetti western, where the good guys fight the bad guys, and there is no gray area! Which brings me to my second point - not exactly rehashed! And it's great! The differences are welcomed - especially in the characters of the Magnificent Seven. The Story fundamentals are the same, as is the plot, but the everything else is not what you expect. Which is refreshing! There is plenty of action & enough one-liners! So I would put this on par with "Quick and the Dead". Which is my way of way of saying "no, it is not the best western out there - But definitely above average!". Lastly, Denzel Washington.... makes a smoother gunman than I expected.
Bad Moms (2016)
Ha Ha Ha... Good light hearted Movie for the "Mums" out there...
First of all... Don't take life so seriously. If you are watching this thinking that you are going to get some life altering affirmations - then don't watch it! But if you are a normal person (which most mums start off being) - and just want a kit-kat (Chocolate) and a time out - Then maybe this is for you. Especially if you are OK understanding that we are not perfect! So if you can have a laugh, and enjoy laughing at yourself sometimes... then this movie is a must for your next "Girl's night Out / Mum's night In". I watched it with my sister, who both of us are control freaks. My sister has a perfectionist character and I am the not-quite-so-perfectionist one in the family. So when taking some sister time out - we truly enjoy the light heartedness and the "Oh-I wish moments" in this film. It made our night even more enjoyable. So I would recommend this to all mums, young mums, single mums, perfect mums, grandmothers... Actually... Just generally anyone who's life isn't always perfect!
The Accountant (2016)
An Action Flick with a little more Meat! :)
Well, I clearly missed a couple of chapters in my studies to become an Accountant, or at least didn't read those sections in my Finance Textbooks. LOL :) I always do enjoy characters who are original and unique. I enjoy them even more-so when they kick ass! So when you like the main character the movie is easier to watch. There was good explanation / character development - without the "woe is he" drama. So if you are looking for an action flick with a little more meat than normal - this is the one for you! (Honestly - it really is because I am a sucker for some corny things that I liked the way it panned out it in the end. A definite if you are an action junkie!).
