Mississippi Grind (2015)
Not a thrill ride; a story; a character study
And a good one. A story about the highs and lows of addicted gamblers, made friends by their addiction. In any other world these two men would not have met; but at a card table they are one in the same.
The story was a bit slow at times but I think it added to the hopelessness of a too long night turning into day and finding the next thing to do. This movie is more like reading a novel, not watching something like Casino, or 21.
It's not a great story, but it's a good one. I'm glad I spent the time.
Inconceivable (2017)
Nicolas Cage was just an Add On - to get you to watch the movie.
This was a 'Lifetime' drama meant for bored people needing a boost in the afternoon. Seriously. And with Nick...the lack of personality and movement was so so so disappointing. He seemed bored and overwhelmed by the female leads. They just swallowed him up. (His hair was utterly unprofessional given the role)
The women did a decent job. Okay one scene was a bit too ridiculous, the outburst at a baby shower - but I made it through.
The Lab tech guy could not have been more wooden. He really couldn't have been. Who was this guy?
And wow, after a C section evil woman is just up and moving around like it was all nothing.
OH my gosh, I'm starting to ramble as all sorts of scenes come to mind; time to stop.
It's a time waster, don't expect too much.
Goodnight, Sugar Babe: The Killing of Vera Jo Reigle (2013)
Where is the court system?
What happened to aiding and abetting being a crime???
Every single person that was EVER in that house was part of this crime. (Oh yeah, I would go to their house for pizza and Vera would be getting shoved in the oven, but boy the pizza was good)
WHAT? WHAT ?
My brain is stuck.
Behind Closed Doors (2013)
Say what?
Just keep sayin it. What? WHAT? Oh now what?
I have no idea what this movie was about. It showed, as another reviewer said, different couples etc. but I will add, whatever cohesion it had, it lost equally.
Key of Brown (2013)
Didn't make it through the first murder...
Because the first victim, even after being stabbed, would not shut up and assess her situation. She just talked through her gag and swore the entire time the actor playing the murderer was trying to build his character. Her utter lack of fear, or even thinking it was a kink job made her clueless and stupid.
Imprisoned by Love (2013)
Three stars for effort
Bad story telling can ruin the best intentions and obliterate the message.
None of the characters evoked any sympathy. There was no depth or interactions of the family members to make me care about any of them. The eldest daughter was written so poorly, I wanted to toss her out the window myself. In that I think the dad showed amazing restraint.
One stand out character was the friend/boss who not only shows her concern but also DOES something to educate the victim, offering options instead of condolences.
A final dramatic scene had the oldest daughter mouthing off to her dad about him not being a man. The father allows it, just standing there; (never mind that previously he had flipped out over his bacon being cold) finally he slaps her, and the daughter stands there and keeps going lecturing her mom on how she should handle business. Daughters do get fed up, but they aren't reckless, and it's anger born of helplessness not arrogance. The scene was so ridiculous - the mother begging her daughter to be quiet while the daughter, having no concern about all of the previous violence she had seen dealt to her mom - 'stands up to him' - if that is all it took to stop a man with rage issues there wouldnt' be a problem in the first place.
There have been many GOOD movies cc the topic of spousal abuse. This is not one of them.
Black Eyed Children: Let Me In (2015)
First Scene
It is OBVIOUS the guy interviewing was drunk or otherwise impaired. His speech is slurred, he has no clear focus. His questions are repetitive and rambling and the grammar mistakes made it all the more painful. Seriously, if you are interviewing someone at least know where you are headed.
I'm trying to understand how none of this was noticed during the making of the darn thing.
Street Crimes (1992)
OKAY FOR A TIME WASTER
I like when you can find 'crime' movies that aren't full of filler sex scenes and writer's block profanity. (Gee, what should I write? I know, the guy is angry he should say F*k before and after every noun)
Anyhoo, that being said, the only thing that was really hard to watch were the fight scenes. The cop who was supposedly the best of the best, going against street best - most lackluster ring dancing I've seen in a long time. How many times would a serious fighter swing his leg OVER his opponents head and have it returned in like. Or stand utterly still waiting to be hit?
It only bothered me because a great deal of the dialogue was about how amazing this fighter was, and how he earned street cred by being so AWESOME. Ah well, it's a Saturday and it was good pablum for the time.
Intervention (2013)
This is not the 'Reality' series "Intervention"
Reading some reviews it is obvious people are not commenting on this particular series. A sad testimonial to how much we really care about the stuff we put in our heads.
Teddy Boy (2015)
The lack of tension was palpable.
This could not possible be the award winning psychological thriller touted in the reviews. The acting was so stilted I thought I had accidentally tripped on a Lifetime installment. I stopped the movie, quit the app, restart, click....same movie. I hunkered down; after all some movies are slow to start. 40 minutes in, I still had no connection to the characters - or the camera angles. I stopped the film to go do something else. And on again ... 30 minutes to go and finally I see some real anxiety in the characters, some real pathos, some real...something.
I gave this movie four stars based on the last 30 minutes of the film.
I don't think the movie was bad, I think the description was misleading.
Storm and Sorrow (1990)
A Lifetime movie of the week. Lackluster and typical.
I watched this expecting little and receiving even less. 1970's feminism with Farrah Fawcett screen time thrown in. Tough girl with big heart pursues difficult sport to prove something. The main characters female co-hort went between used, underhanded, sneaky and best friend. Because, you know, women never really pull for each other unless they are foreign and speak little English, as seen in last third of movie. Long blown out hair and perfect skin made this even less than a movie about mountain climbing in some ways. I was just endlessly reminded that it was a TV movie, and that makes any movie hardly worth interpreting.
