Vikingulven (2022)
This was the "most viewed" in its release week? How?? Really, How??
This plot had so many inconsistencies and holes it was beyond laughable. The acting was poor. I can't blame the actors though, because they had nothing to work with.
Really, really, poor. The title of the film is click-bait; it's meant to give you an impression that somehow Vikings are involved, but, nope, apart from the first 3 minutes in which they were as dumb as every other character in the film.
Characters went from (reasonable) disbelief and ridicule about the idea of werewolves, to full acceptance in the space of a few scenes. They then completely failed to deal with the lone protagonist.
The best thing about the film was the gorgeous Norwegian scenery (that's what the 3 stars are for).
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Disappointing and over-long
Perhaps it was too much to ask that a much delayed sequel would have the same emotional impact as the originals. This movie left me wishing they had just left the franchise alone. The few interesting bits were too short and not covered in enough depth, and the boring bits (pretty much every fight scene) were far too long and numerous.
To be fair, the acting was pretty good, so that was not the issue. It was just that the plot was poor, and it felt more like one of those Youtube videos where they "explain xxxxxxxxxx in 10 minutes" . . . Just spread over two hours instead.
I felt like they actually bottled it . . . They could have taken the story into some interesting places which the ideas they did introduce, but they just focussed on (re)creating ever more nonsensical fight scenes, which have been done often and better since the original movies created a whole new concept.
Very disappointed and actually quite tired by the end.
Intergalactic (2021)
Didn't make it thru Ep 1
I just don't understand how companies like Sky can produce something this awful. There are so many good examples of Sci-Fi to reference that they don't even need to be original; just learn from what's already out there.
I gave it 2 stars because a) it wasn't a vanilla Hollywood yawn, and b) the production values were excellent - great effects.
Arrival (2016)
A thinking person's Sci-Fi movie
After the recent rash of mindless/pointless "blockbuster" sci-fi (Batman vs Superman anyone?), this is like a veritable gale of fresh air!
A first contact movie with believable struggles to bridge a gap in communications, understanding, motivations, technology, you name it. . . everything came into play. Brave but flawed characters without the usual over-acted good/bad/mad/funny guys. Just humans trying to deal with a genuine out of this world situation.
The plot is very clever (I'll say no more than that), and leaves you wondering right up to the jaw-dropping climax.
The only downside was the tired plot device of America / The West being the good guys, and Russia/China/The East being the (irrational) bad guys. If you can ignore that, you are in for one hell of a treat!
