Birdy (1984)
snooze
Over 2 hours of film ending with 2 of the lamest 2 jokes. "There wasn't anything I wanted to say" and the suggestion he had tried to fly.
Nothing happens of any significance and the story of what broke birdy was covered in literally 30 seconds.
In short Mathew's obsessed with birds and his life was rather dull before he turned into a mute. Cages character is of a cool man about town who's character wouldn't have spent a minute hanging around with Modines unless they were stuck on an island, even then I wouldn't bet on it.
I guess you're supposed to think at the end of the movie they are going to go back to acting like teenagers again ?
The Day After (1983)
The usual rose tinted Hollywood effort
People getting married, sat at the movies etc, yeah that's what you'd be doing while the 3 minute warning was going off. If you watch Threads watch it after this to make the most of The Day After otherwise it will seem a poorer effort than it is, but in any case it's a little disappointing. They do show a disclaimer at the end of the film saying a nuclear exchange would be a lot worse in reality-no sh** Sherlock. Within a short period of time the government seemed to have everything falling back into place, nonsense. As opposed to horrific it made the whole theatre of nuclear war seem, well, damned inconvenient. How many years is it going to be before we see 9/11 shown as "all's well that ends well !" ?
Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
Censored
Clint made a big deal in both films about Ralph Ignatowskis story, but when it came to giving any insight as to what happened has seemingly decided it was best not to create any bad feeling. According to this movie he was simply bayoneted. I don't know what I expected Clint to show but I was left totally ignorant of what actually happened by this movie-I had to Google it. Was the other US soldier who was treated for his wounds when captured by the Japanese but died of them anyway just a fictional character to "balance the books" for Ralphs inhuman treatment ? This kind of doctoring of true stories to fit the historical picture the director wants to paint is VERY annoying. For myself it ruins the film for watching again as although I know it's not a blow by blow account of what actually took place I know the director isn't interested in portraying events accurately. This also results in ignorance amongst anyone who doesn't look up actual events. Other than this doctoring this film would be a 7 or an 8 but as I don't want to watch it again as it winds me up it gets a 5. Stop censoring/modifying historical dramas Hollywood !!!! Clint stick to Dirty Harry or Unforgiven, you can make up what you like then ! Poor Iggy went through a nightmare that can't be imagined but Clint didn't think it was worth rocking the boat or upsetting anyone with it.
The Last King of Scotland (2006)
What an annoying film !
SPOILERS !!!
Though I wish someone had told me ! The lead character is a man of "high morals" and yet he meets 2 married women in the film, sleeps with one and tries to sleep with the other. His character is supposed to be portraying Scottish pride but just comes across as a someone who hates anyone English (unless there's a chance he can bonk them). Although he later gets offered a hot lap dancer and suddenly he 's not bothered about sex !! (maybe she was single)
The film finally got to the point of no return for me when the lead character was in fear of his life in a country that was then falling apart so what does he do ? Head for the border ? No, he f s the dictators wife and then tries to murder him !!! Well obviously, what else would you do ? He attempts this with a large bottle of handy murder pills that are sat on the shelf in all hospitals, just take 2 with water !!! I mean I was expecting Amin to try a pill out on a bodyguard anyway, after all he'd just killed the doctors friend, but the doctor didn't !(don't know if he knew about them being bonk buddies). When the bodyguard went to give the pills to a soldier to test them out and the doctor stopped the soldier from taking them..that was the final straw...DVD out ! Lead character was a moron, an idiot and a suicidal wife bonking idiot to boot. I know he won't have been killed after I stopped watching(realistically inevitable-not in this tat though). That would have been the only thing worth continuing watching for. Totally unbelievable and annoying from the off...Whittaker was good though :-)
K2 (1991)
Best climbing movie bar T.t. Void...Great story !
This site is full of pretentious idiots ! From climbers who wanted to watch a 2 hour film about sack hauling and food ration logistics to unemployed film critics whining about interesting characters-you can't weave a super depth character into an action movie ! One guy (who by his own admission didn't even watch it properly) expected them to have actually filmed it on K2,(he called himself "a climber")he clearly knows nothing about the logistics or the remoteness and danger of that place-film a motion picture ON K2 ? What a tit ! As it is at every opportunity the film tries to establish what kind of person both climbers are, scenes such as Taylor telling Harold that on K2 he's on his own, Harold takes this as another sign of him being selfish 'till Taylor fully explains the situation. In other areas he proves he is that selfish, until he gets the ultimate challenge ! There are a few faults with things that are "undoable" but in comparison with every action film ever made v.few. As for unbelievability try reading about REAL mountain stories or Ernest Shakleton then tell me you don't believe them !
As for complaints about clichés ! Climbing IS a cliché !!! That's why there aren't millions of climbing movies, how many twists can such a limited sphere have ? ........ Bar Touching the Void the best mountain movie-only one worth watching. Great action movie, plenty of comedy with real mountaineering stories (or clichés !)blended in. Atmospheric music too.
