Dead or Alive 2: Tôbôsha (2000)
Warm fuzzies from Takashi Miike?
Unlike the first Dead or Alive film which is void of emotion Dead or Alive 2 the birds leaves you feeling, dare I say it, like giving your best friend a big hug. This is not a continuation of the first film but a completely different film as many of you know, but does have many similarities. Such as a scene were Mizuki(Sho Aikawa) pulls a large cinderblock from his shirt and whacks an enemy in the head with it. Also the film is not as graffic except for a scene or two. But I say this truthfully this film gives you the warm fuzzies a rare treat in Miike movies. Seeing two friends united once again makes you want to cry at some points. Of course Miike still makes it recognizable as his own luckily enough...
Please go out and rent this film, or do what I did.Buy It!!!!You won't regret it!!!!
Zebraman (2004)
70 cult classic television, now a takashi miike film...
Zebraman is certainly not Takashi Miikes best film (the best is Dead or Alive 2) but it is still worth your time if you are a Miike fan. It is also a good choice for the classic 70's cult show Kikaiaduc(forgive me on my terrible spelling) which is well portrayed in the film. The film is about a struggling junior high teacher having problems at home. His only escape from reality is to imitate his favorite TV show from when he was a kid "Zebraman". Like all Miike films the costume design is excellent, so trust me on this you will love the zebraman costume. But alas the film lacks the trademark Miike feel. I'm not talking about the violence (which if your interested in i'de suggest anything but this one)but the film work. This film made me feel like I was watching a made for TV movie (stylistically)
But either way I'd suggest the film, just to say you saw it...
Gokudô kyôfu dai-gekijô: Gozu (2003)
The tale of a young mans frantic journey to find his escaped crazed brother.
The film Gozu is an all around good movie. Although it has moments when you think to yourself "well that was pointless" it is worth seeing. I'de even pay money just to see the beginning where a full grown man beats a long haired chihauhau to death. Later in the film it becomes apparent that director Takashi Miike was heavily influenced by Lynch. Many dreams sequences come about which lead to clues (dancing midget,Agent dale cooper,Twin peaks). Much like Miike's Audition the film is highly disturbing. Such as the excessive amounts of breast milk that is shown. So if your in the mood for something strange and with no real formula rent Gozu (cow head) Side note: An interesting side note is when the writer of the film was in elementary school he knew a kid by the name of Gozu. He always wondered why anyone would name their child cow head
Jigureul jikyeora! (2003)
A young man thinks his old boss is an alien and is going to destroy the green planet
When I saw this movie this movie I was expecting something fairly light hearted and funny. I had even taken my mother along with me. From viewing the preview I knew it was going to a very dark comedy but whats the worst that could happen. While watching it I realized I should have done some research before taking my mother to see this. Not only did it make her cringe and turn her head it made her weep also. I as well did these things. The director could make you feel any emotion, this was because it is a multi genre film which is hard to pull off. It goes from comedy to crime to horror to action to science fiction. Even though it has some very terrifying torture scenes the film is very funny and well filmed. It was a very pleasant surprise even my mother thought it was great. Once you finish the film you have a feeling of calm.
