The Monster (2016)
snooze fest
This movie is slow to start. Very slow to start, the acting was pretty good, the strained relationship between mother and daughter is over used and irrelevant to the plot. The monster was made with practical effects, however in most scenes it looks super fake, in some scenes you can see the person manipulating the monster and i just straight up didn't like this move.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
Tame, but still good
I was super nervous about going into Spiral seeing as Saw is one of my favourite franchises. Chris Rock was an interesting choice as the main role, it took a while for me to not think of Marty from Madagascar. Once i got over that i found his performance quite impressive.
There was a disappointing amount of traps, and while the traps were interesting i felt them to be tame in comparison to previous movies, and the victims to be less desperate to get out of said traps. I was massively disappointed in the use of a new puppet and new voice over but I guess i can understand why it was changed. It was also rather disappointing that within the first 20 minutes guessed who Jigsaw was.
Overall it was quite a good movie in itself, the intrigue was there, the loose ends were tied, will there be another one? I couldn't tell you. But again Saw is one of my favourite franchises and i would gladly go see any future movies.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Doctor Sleep
An interesting development from The Shining, Doctor Sleep brings us a whole other dimension of the term 'The Shining' while it gives us a few answers on what actually happened to Danny after the events of the previous film it did not shed light on things that we could've easily guessed and in fact Doctor Sleep wasn't really even about Danny but instead about Abra, a young girl trying to make sense of her powers as she is sucked into witnessing a brutal and quite frankly distressing scene in which Rose and her band of weirdos are torturing and eating a young boy's steam. This sets off a chain of events in which Danny becomes something of a mentor and eventually it leads us back to the Overlook Hotel. This movie, although a direct sequel, feels separate from The Shining and while it was an entertaining and sometimes even an emotional watch, I left the theatre somewhat dissatisfied.
Beautiful People (2014)
hated it
"Who is the real monster?" Beautiful people is a movie I picked up because of the cover. Big mistake. While the monsters, in my opinion, looked pretty cool the movie itself was one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen, and it appears they tried really hard as well. The plot was messy, the characters were confusing and annoying, and I overall hated this movie.
Saw (2004)
loved it
"Most people are so ungrateful to be alive, but not you, not anymore." Saw, a movie in which I have been avoiding since the dawn of time, intimidated by the presence of torture, I avoided this movie like the plague. But after watching this nail-biting maze of a movie, I regret my prejudice, after seeing how beautifully constructed this movie is. I loved the manipulation between characters, the air of realism, and the threat of deeply disturbing acts of sadism that had me covering my eyes. I thought this movie was woven together perfectly and wrapped itself in a neat little twist.
