Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)
Nope
I miss the days when Disney would focus on a few films at a time and they were all incredible, instead of producing them left and right and coming out with silly, sub par films, with bad acting.
This didn't keep any of my family entertained- from an 80 year old to a 9 year old and everything in between. It was also more violent then it needed to be. Instead of playful, joyful and magical, it felt heavy, dark, and confusing.
The only redeeming quality was the concept of the backstory of Peter and Hook.
We won't watch again, in fact, I'll second guess watching another new movie on Disney+ and stick to what they release in theatres.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
I actually liked it
Holy crap. Did not see the end coming!!! Why is no one talking about that? Sully was his daughter! And Iris was a figment of his imagination?! It really came full circle in an unexpected way and the message that had been a constant underlying thread throughout turned into the point of the whole movie.
Definitely more drama with a little sci-fi. Yes it was slow at times but there was plenty of action in between in my opinion. As well as emotional and poignant moments and messages. Between the space storyline and the earth storyline it kind of felt like two different movies but not in a bad way. I thought all of the acting was phenomenal personally.
There were a lot of things that I would have liked more explanation on (the underground area. Any other survivors, what exactly happened to earth, where did Mitchell's family go, did he find them..:), or more backstory (iris , Sully and Ade, Augustine in general...) but I felt drawn in to the story and characters even with some of that depth lacking. I really liked all of the varying relationships in it. No one was a villain which was so refreshing and kept it feeling genuine. Although I found it enjoyable and captivating, there were still too many unanswered questions by the end.
Black Beauty (2020)
Wanted to love
Kind of enjoyable overall but the narration was totally repetitive, over dramatic, and so awfully cheesy like it was written by a 10 year old trying to write a touching story. Even my 7 year old was cringing at the "horses" words. I have not read the book but am sure the words and narration in the movie disgraced the original work. Too bad because it could have been a decent movie.
Sanditon (2019)
Ehh
Not even close to Jane Austen. Sooo much drama, and a lot of sexuality that wasn't sexy at all. Even some incest implied (even though as it turns out, those characters aren't blood related. But still....) Lots of somewhat-villainous characters but not a lot of explanation as to why they are the why they are; very little backstory on all the characters, even the main characters. Most plot twists just seemed like a sloppy copy-cat of other Austen's. It felt too modern at times and just didn't all add up for me. The writing was so forced and just off. Overall really disappointing and a shame to be associated with Jane Austen. If it wasn't supposed be a continuation of a Jane Austen I probably could have said that it was a lame but mildly enjoyable drama.
Downton Abbey (2019)
Fun to watch
This doesn't really feel like a movie but that doesn't mean it was bad. It's more like an extended episode updating us on each and every character. And there's a lot of characters. This means it doesn't leave time for any deep or dramatic plot twists, just little somewhat predictable and familiar scenarios for each character to resolve throughout the film. This made it feel a little cheesy at times, and left me wanting one of those really heart wrenching or beautifully triumphant moments that Downton Abbey does so well, but we don't see that in this film. BUT I think it's better this way though, because if they were to have enough time to develop one of these, we would feel disappointed on not really getting that update on other characters we care about too. So this is light hearted, easy to watch and gives us that Downton Abbey fix we all need. I hope they will consider beginning a new series in the future to continue the story!
The Village (2019)
Ok
Thought it would feel more like Parenthood or maybe even this is us, but it's soooo forced and so predictable. The acting doesn't feel as genuine as it could be. Some of the characters are inconsistent and alll over the place. Everything is over dramatic. Every second that could be turned into huge drama or fight or family division is. It's also one of those shows where no one seems to actually go to work. 24 hours a day they're just devoted to the crisis of the moment.
A handful of characters are quite likable but others just seem fake and forced and in general the story like just goes back and forth without really making progress in any one direction.
I wanted to like it, but maybe it will get better and the actors will settle into the characters better.
Vanity Fair (2018)
Entertaining
Entertaining. I thought the cast was great. I couldn't decide whether to love or hate Becky which I think is the whole point. The ending seemed to rushed but otherwise I really enjoyed it.
L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables: Fire & Dew (2017)
Loved it
I grew up on the old Anne of Green Gables and loved them. I heard such negative reviews of the Netflix version so I thought I would try this. I thought it was very well done and the characters were beautifully portrayed. I loved Martin Sheen as Matthew and thought all the other characters were great as well. It felt true to the original but also fresh and not just a copy cat.
