Ad Astra (2019)
The heart of darkness but in space
There's something about this movie that resonates beyond its Sci fi qualities. It's the story of a son in search of his father and a quest to the infinite and beyond to kill a monster. It has good visuals, a slow but attentive pace and some thrilling scenes in space. It's allright.
Bliss (2019)
Intense experience.
Dracula meets Climax from Gaspar Noe. Or something like that. It's a kind of hallucinogenic experience in the process of making art. One gives his own body (guts and blood) in order to reach the work of art. Unfortunately, the protagonist is a bit flat and kind of moves along a single line without evolving. Maybe that's the reason why, despite being 80 minutes long, it feels longer.
Stay Out Stay Alive (2019)
Not the worst movie
I've watched a lot a bad horror flics and I thought this one would be one more in that lot. So I've watched it thinking that when it became unbearable I would stop wachting it. But interestingly enough I survived until the end. Sure, some of the characters are bad written and some of the effects are naive (even unnecessary), but the premise is alright (An homage to Treasure of Sierra Madre) and it has some good moments. One thing that bothered me a lot: there's no need to repeat so many times the Indian curse. It was very clear since the epilogue.
Phenomena (1985)
Outstanding visuals with plot holes.
Despite its many plot-holes, the visual imaginary of Argento is worth watching. The camera sometimes moves in an uncanny way, flying like a fly or with a high pitch nerve.
There's a voice over at the beginning that indicates that Jennifer enters the boarding school. It's the only time such a extradiagetic narrator appears and it's totally unnecessary. Some of the actings are terrible, but Jennifer connelly nails it every time.
The scenes with the million flies or some scenes with the monkey (in an homage to poe's murders in the rue morgue) are incredible.
