Sex Education (2019)
Very enjoyable, but with reservations
I watched this as a friend told me it was really good. After about 5 episodes I suddenly thought I'm watching the wrong thing, as my friend does not like teen programmes. She had recommended Sex Life, not Sex Education. Anyway, I had been enjoying it, so I continued to watch it. It is very entertaining. Funny, sad, poignant, and often annoying. Some really great characters, and some characters are easy to dislike. Too much sex and too many teens with strange sexual leanings. I don't think some of it is realistic. When I was at school it was totally different and I didn't know anyone who was gay, but we are talking about the 60s when I was at secondary school. Obviously things were not out in the open as much then, so it's good that things have changed a lot in that direction. We didn't even have proper sex education, which is crazy.
The acting is good and I'm really enjoying Gillian Anderson in it. She has really grown on me recently and was marvellous as Mrs Thatcher in The Crown. Asa Butterfield is excellent as always and Ncuti Gatwa is a revelation to me, as I had not seen him before and I really warmed to him, I think he is wonderful. Such a sweet, likeable, character.
I'm finding some of the words/expressions extremely irritating. Therapize anyone?!!! Another one about "you need to own your own" something or other, can't remember exactly. It should have been totally set in England with English language and not American. There are far too many instances of American speak creeping into the UK and ruining our language. GRRRR!!!
I'm currently on episode 8 of Series 2, but reviews of series 4 are very off-putting. I expect I will still watch it to the end though, as I hate leaving things unfinished.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this. But don't watch with parents if they are prudes! Probably great to watch with a friend or partner.
Crush (2001)
God I'm soooooo peed off!
Was really enjoying this film until Jed died. Totally unnecessary and ruined it for me. GRRRRR!!! Not that keen on Andy McDowell or Anna Chancellor, but was decent enough film and Bill Paterson and Imelda Staunton are always good. Could have had a better ending.
