Blue Jasmine (2013)
Is it just me?
Usually I would only think a film is 10s across the board if it included spaceships and aliens...but this interpersonal drama is at the top of my favourite films...I categorically avoid Woody Allen films but I didn't even notice this was his work...I don't know if it's Cate Blanchett or a Streetcar Named Desire but this film is a modern classic for me 💋
Nitram (2021)
Cold open to the tragedy
Fantastic distillation of the facts leading up to the Port Author massacre...I found this nuanced and unsympathetic to any of the characters, I loved the ambiguous emotions at the end of the main characters stories...no celebration of a killer just a study in humanities...
The Islands (2019)
Religsploitation b movie 😅
Quite enjoyable as a farcical romp. Mira Sorvino drew me in and her performance showed huge range from almost no emotion at all to over the top crazy happiness, mayby her agent told her she was doing comedy. Take a sip every time an Islander has a full face of makeup and finish your drink when you spot absolutely mismatched hair extensions.
An American Pickle (2020)
An American Shame
The premise of this film made me so excited for a hilarious story, unfortunately once we reach current day I felt like we switched down a few gears into overly conceited mumblecore territory. To middling for me I would have loved way more over the top hilarity or a much more dramatic direction. I do love Seth Rogen I think this was a pretty sparse overview of what he can do.
Nightkill (1980)
1908's noir??!!
I love a film noir and this for the bill, I also love how all synopses I read before watching kept me guessing about who the villain might be! What I thought would be a Femme Fatale flick turned out to be a Damsel in Distress that kept me glued despite some wtf moments. In the scope of an 80s flick I wish I could give this a 9 or 10 but the ending made me wish for another film, or at least another 20 mins
