Inspector Morse: Masonic Mysteries (1990)
With Endeavor now over ... this episode no longer works
Spoilers: At the time of this release Endeavour has ended it's run. Morse's Masonic history is now seen in a different light. Though Lewis doesn't know the history of Morse, given to him in a folder, fans of the series do. The reasoning behind the Villain (who is wonderfully played by Ian McDiarmid), wanting Morse to understand what being imprisoned for something he didn't do, doesn't hold anymore. Endeavour's history proved this did happen. Thaw would have certainly played it differently. In hindsight, if this episode were to be (re)made now, Chief Superintendent Strange would certainly be more sympathetic and quick to believe that Morse was being framed.
Doing a rewatch of Morse now is very different from the first go around that is for sure. The first time around I probably would have given this an 8 1/2 now I am giving it a 7 because I can't give it 6 1/2.
The Orville: Gently Falling Rain (2022)
My highest Rating of the season so far.
Without giving away anything. From the Amazing music that accompanies the landing party to the Big Reveal twenty minutes till the end of the episode this one packs a punch! Writers Brannon Braga & André Bormanis wrote a great script that hit just the right spot. MacFarlane's performance never waivered from his characters firm belief in Hope. From the Battles scenes amazing affects to the one on one moments shared between characters, I am still tingling and yes I did get a bit choked up. The mark that this episode will leave on the rest of the series is VERY permanent and one I hope that we get to see expand.
Legends of Tomorrow: Too Legit to Quit (2022)
I love this show ... BUT
This is one of my lowest ratings. The Actors were great with what they were given but the writers ... Have they even SEEN the show. You are asking a group of friends, who have been on this ship "at least for Sarah 7 yrs" and tell them they have to retire. Which showing them what they become leaves all of them upset. Then having the whole "Legends don't retire" conversation when you go on to name all of the previous legends (except for Rip).
I knock off points for so many small details that has a fan FROM the Beginning just irritated me. 1 being: You don't get out the other Zari and have her in the group picture? It takes you to the last half for anyone to get around to asking how Doctor Gwyn Davies is. Then instead of talking to the NEW Captain you plan a side mission - which if you had worked together would have come up with plan that is SO obvious on how the next episode has to go fix. The Legends are Better then this. The series seems to be ending - let it go out on a HIGH note.
CSI: Miami: Dangerous Son (2007)
PROPS to Nan Dutton-Sells and her team!!!
Whoever spotted Evan Elllingson, as the person to play Caine's son Kyle, is a genius. The kid is almost a "mini me" of David Caruso. I'm not one for "8 hours before" episodes, I like to guess what's coming on my own. But, even without the spoiler, you know the instant Kyle stands up and puts his hands on his hips that the two characters are related.
I have enjoyed how the writer's have given the character of Horatio the uncanny ability to sense family connections, i.e. The minute he saw his niece Madison for the first time back in season two.
I do question why the orders, on a 16 year old who left the woman he "kidnapped" alive, are "shoot to kill.?" I guess the writers wanted to add MORE drama in the last 5 minutes of the show. And it's interesting that a Lieutenant for MDPD has such pool with the Coast Guard. But then it is Television.
I look forward to seeing more Kyle episodes.
CSI: Miami: Dead Woman Walking (2003)
Well done story on a reoccuring theme
The idea of a "Dead man/woman Walking" has been done many times ... see NCIS for example. The chemistry between David Caruso's Caine and Karen Sillas, our victim is what holds the viewers attention. The characters immdiate respect for each other makes the sadness of the her predicament heartbreaking.
The pace of the show does feel sped up, with all of the evidence coming through faster even by TV standards. But, since the victim has only five days to live, that's to be expected.
The show does try to counter all of this with specks of comedy, especially from Adam Baldwins', Radiaiton Man, and it does work.
Final result: even though the story has been told many times, this one is well worth the watch.
Faerie Tale Theatre: Princess and the Pea (1984)
Why aren't these shown more?
I own the whole Faerie Tale Theatre series on DVD and always wondered why
1: Why we don't air these on TV anymore? and 2: Why don't school's or local theaters use them (the scripts) as fun stock shows to put on?
This one: The Princess and the Pea is a perfect example of a simple script that could easily be adapted to the stage as a (at most) 10 person play. It could be seen as the non-musical equivalent of Once Upon a Mattress.
Liza Minnelli is a no nonsense, smart princess who knows that even though her cute prince (Tom Conti) is a mama's boy - he has potential. The cast is very supportive of each other and the dialogue is quick witted.
Out of the whole series this is one of my top five favorites.
The Flash: All Doll'd Up (2018)
Rag Time and Caitlin stories good ... Barry being Supportive Great ... Iris ... ugh.
First off let's just get this out right now ... Iris is NOT a MOTHER ... not at this time! I'm sorry this FACT makes this whole episode just annoying.
Iris is Upset because Nora "hates her". Okay, Deal with it! She's not your daughter. She is your future self's daughter. Iris and Barry have Not Conceived a child. ... and from the moment Nora has told them about herself, all bets are off that Nora will be who they have.
But, Iris hasn't spent nine months let alone 25 year raising anyone. She and Barry are still Newlyweds. After all Barry was jailed practically right after their wedding and they were consumed with defeating DeVoe. Barry even reminds her with their 'never having had a First Dance' comment.
Iris has met a woman who happens to share her DNA; who has history with a different Iris West. An Iris West who raised a child without her husband to support her.
There is what, only about a three year age difference between them (Nora says she's 25, Iris is what maybe 27?). If Iris and Nora had met, say at Jitters, and started a conversation, without Nora mentioning any connection, would they have even become friends? Iris needs to calm down and Nora needs to act like a twenty something, not a teenager having a tantrum.
Iris is jealous of Nora's need to connect with Barry (at least she doesn't have to worry about there being a romantic reason). Barry is feeling the connection because of the speedforce and his own history with making timeline changes. But, he is training Nora just as he did Kid Flash and Jessie Quick ... he is passing on his knowledge.
There was really no need to reveal last week her feelings towards Iris. I mean - okay the writers may have wanting to keep up the anger issue (especially after a 2 week hiatus). But they didn't need try So hard!
These three people DON'T need to form an instant family. They can become family, just as all of the other speedsters and heros have ... slowly by making bonds. They can become friends NOT Parents - that ship has sailed.
Iris's whole speech about what she did to Nora is done with this horrible present tense emotion. Barry's answer nails issue on the head! "You are never going to become the person that Nora knows in the future." Grant's acting is wonderful; his portrayal of Barry earnestly trying to be a good father and teacher is great. But, it's when he is really showing us Barry connecting as a newlywed (still in love with his wife) that he is amazing.
The real question is why hasn't Nore done a Back to the Future erase? From the moment she explains what Iris did, we know that Iris probably won't now. Take the lessons Nora's imparting and use them when you actually have time to conceive a child (girl, boy or maybe even twins).
I don't usually write a review but this episode just required me to get the whole "NOT a Parent" issue that's been building off my chest. Which caused one of my lowest scores ... I almost went with a 7 but ...
Glee: Born This Way (2011)
Kurt's Back! and it's due to .... Santana?
Worth watching just for Kurt's solo of As If We Never Said Goodbye and the love between him and Blaine. Sadly the whole Anti-bullying message the show was going for dies with Zizes's outing of Quinn. (And this why I docked it a star) Where were Karofsky and Santana for that?
ER: May Day (2000)
Carter ... the tie that binds
Noah Wyle's, Dr. Carter has survived Six Seasons of this show and his amazing acting culminates at the end of this season. Carter has become a central link that holds these people together but he's become dependent on painkillers. And after the horrific actions that occurred during the first half of the season, who could blame him, and yet his peers have ignored the signs. As Green even says "it's Carter, your mind just doesn't go there." But when forced to notice (and despite past issues with each other); Green, Weaver, Benton, Anspaugh and even Chen all work together to talk to their friend and co-worker and get him help.
This season finale brings out the best in all of the actors in this ensemble, from the shared glances between the nurses to the action scenes surrounding the helicopter. It also proves that this show will last even without Clooney and Margulies. Next season should be interesting.
The Orville: Majority Rule (2017)
Voices and Majority
The discussion about rights in this story reminds me very much of my favorite lines in the movie Pump Up the Volume. Where Principle Creswood says "Can't you understand that nothing is more important than a good education." and Mr. Hunter responds, "Except the basic right to it." In this episode of the Orville, Lysella states that "Everybody deserves a voice." and Bortus responds "A voice should be earned not given away." Both of these quotes/statements are correct and could take up weeks of discussion in a Social Studies class. Basic rights are important but earning a voice (from educating yourself and proving your worth) go hand in hand. MacFarlane's attempt to educate us, through this well scripted story, that our vote counts. (We have a right to vote) but we should educate ourselves, confirm our facts (not just go with the majority or believe the general hype) is just as important. The writing in this episode is on par with the rest of the exceptional story telling of this series. I hope season three and beyond are just as thought provoking and fun.
