The fast and the ferocious
25 April 2024
This film deserves a 7.2, at least a 6.9. Its current 5.4 is way too low imho.

Yes, the kids verge on being annoying, almost certainly not as annoying as two American teenage girls would be IRL, but annoying nonetheless and say some silly things at points which do break the suspense, and not in a good way. It's obvious that the writers/director were trying to keep their childlike annoyingness to a minimum and, to be fair, there have been much much worse cases.

Apart from that this is a solid Sunday night popcorn flick. Great cinematography, nice soundtrack (and sound effects), good action, good frights, simple but good storyline and dialogue and the ever charismatic Idris Elba.

Because the current score is so undeservedly low I've given it a 10 but as I said it really deserves at least a 6.9.

Glad We Persisted
11 February 2024
TLDR: The first 3 eps are very average, we were so close shutting it off but it gets better from there and ends up being a very good series.

I can totally understand why people are saying there isn't much chemistry between the 2 leads because in the first few episodes there really isn't. They don't seem to be a good fit and they're always joking sarcastically which isn't exactly "romantic".

A classic rom-com plot device is to have the leads hate each other at the start then they inevitably come around and of course fall in love. Here they were sort of "meh" from the start with her clearly having more feelings for him as evidenced by her actions and him taking her for granted.

From ep 4 or 5 it is very good. A nice chill and fairly realistic (maybe not too relatable as I'm not a privileged pretty boy from a wealthy family but that's not a dealbreaker) depiction of a couples ups and downs over about 14 years. Sounds gripping I know, but there is enough drama and twists to keep it interesting and to keep us immersed.

I have actually been thinking that character development has been lacking in movies for awhile now, it's like it has become an afterthought. But to be fair 1.5 to 2 hours really isn't long enough for character arcs + plot + action +resolution.

That's where these series shine because they can fully flesh out every character and you feel like you know them pretty well by the end.

If you're looking for a chill but well paced, well produced, well acted, well made little show then this is recommended.

Europe and Sth Korea Seem to be making Netflix Gold
11 January 2024
And are making much more quality series than Hollywood at the moment.

This is a great show. Every episode gripping. I usually like movies because you get the whole story in 2 or so hours but they can only really be character based or action based because there really isn't enough time for both.

This series is like an 8 hour long action, suspense, thriller movie. You really get to know the characters and live their nightmares one starting from a drunken fight and the other from a terrible childhood.

Only a couple of plot holes and one loose end with a neighbor and a water bottle that is inconsequential so doesn't matter. Neither of these negatively affect the show in any way.

Highly recommend.

Kim's Convenience (2016–2021)
8/10
Wholesome, engaging and funny
12 November 2023
My score is for the first season only and that's probably all I'll watch. It is a unique, wholesome little show which doesn't have a laugh track but Mr Kim himself is consistently funny with some really lol funny bits throughout the episodes. Unfortunately it is only really mr kim that is funny and the other set pieces, like the car rental place, fall a bit flat. They're ok to keep the "story" plodding along but are just not that funny.

Fortunately mr kim is in pretty much every scene so that's good.

After binging the first season it's getting a bit 'samey' so will probably leave it there. It is a cute, unique, wholesome and often funny little show though so I recommend it.

Opioids are so hot right now...
2 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What is this, the fourth or fifth recent drama concerning opioids and big pharma? I mean, it's good to get the point out there but I think we get the picture.

In saying that I did enjoy this movie. It did feel like it was struggling to stay entertaining at some points because, let's be honest, it's a pretty dry subject and actually pretty depressing in real life which is why they tried to make it like Wolf of Wall Street as much as possible.

Emily, Chris and Andy carry the movie with the supporting cast doing well too, especially Catherine O'Hara who plays Emily's character's mum. She was very funny.

Worth watching for Emily's performance if you're a fan but if you've already had your fill of big pharma companies getting their comeuppance then there's nothing really new here.

Man of Steel (2013)
9/10
One of DC's Best
10 September 2023
One must hand it to DC, Snyder and Nolan for standing their ground when they were getting their butts kicked by Iron Man and the Avengers.

Man of Steel is a very good movie which carries on the modern, darker themes that Nolan started with his Batman. All to great effect and very well executed all round.

One of DC's best, up there with Nolan's Batman and the first Wonder Woman imo.

It's a real shame they didn't give Henry his own standalone sequels instead mating him with Affleck's terrible Batman and the Justice League, although Snyder's version of JL was good of course.

This just seems like a great origin story that was wasted by not having good sequels. Maybe they are yet to come.

Zombieverse (2023– )
9/10
A unique Zombie Experience
12 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It can't be easy to come up with any new ideas in the Zombie genre these days as it has been done to death (pun intended) for decades now.

Zombieverse is a new take that I haven't seen before.

I imagine it's probably a lot more scripted than it looks (and could well be just 100% scripted) but it comes across as a tongue-in-cheek, semi-reality, drama, comedy, skit-show, horror. Yes, it's quite difficult to define.

They got a group of famous Sth Korean celebrities, most of which are comfortable in front of the camera and some obviously aren't which clever editing has hidden as much as possible, and dumped them into this psuedo-realistic zombie gameshow where from their natural reactions we are supposed to believe that they aren't "acting" but are actually experiencing a zombie apocalypse.

Think Schwarzenegger's The Running Man mixed with Celebrity Survivor but with a strong comedic bent and with all the bloopers left in and you might get sort of a feel what this series is like.

It sounds like a train wreck I know but they actually make most of it work. Not all as some parts fall flat but most.

I'm sure there is quite a bit of improv which mostly works and is very funny when it does.

I noticed a lot of reviewers stopped watching early and gave it scathing reviews. This is kind of understandable as you have to be in the right mood and watch a few episodes to get in the right mindset but it's worth it in the end.

I could write a lot more about the complexities of the show but this is enough already. I recommend it.

I'm getting too old for this s***!
25 May 2023
Oh wait, that was Danny Glover, not Arnie.

So the big Austrian is cashing in on some streaming action. Why not right? As long as he isn't hurting himself (I don't think so as there are pretty obvious stunt doubles in the action scenes) and as long as he's doing it for fun and not because he HAS to (We all know how expensive those American medical bills are right) it's all good.

From a fast paced, action packed first episode that even had a few tongue in cheek jibes at some of Arnies classic/cliché quips and a good twist that wasn't really a twist because it is literally in the movies synopsis it seems to be slowing a bit in the second episode.

I hope it isn't a one trick/joke pony. I hope I haven't been flixbaited.

We will see....

Two Cool Dudes Doing Cool Stuff
31 December 2022
I'd just like to start off by saying that I would 100% rather have my kids watch this than "Love Island" or "Celebrity Housewives" or any of that reality TV rubbish.

This is a fun show with two cool guys that find YouTube videos of people failing at things and build contraptions to try and make it work. Sometimes they succeed and sometimes they don't. It's quite funny when they don't.

There's some very basic science which is demonstrated so the kids will actually learn something.

The banter between the two hosts is pretty funny, they are obviously good buds which is cool. It's very American but not cringe American because the hosts are pretty chill.

I think some of the reviews here are a bit harsh on what is a light, fun and interesting show. I caught the episode where they made the lie detector and thought it was pretty funny.

Not a bad way way to spend 50 mins imo.

Seriously chilling thriller
27 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm sure there's a word for it where the acting is so natural and expertly done that you literally don't see any "acting" whatsoever. That is what I observed here from all the cast and especially Eddie and Jess.

Yes, it's a bit of a slow burn and takes a while to pick up steam but that lengthy set up gives you time to get to really know the characters. Then when the drama kicks in it has a lot more gravitas.

Jess and Eddie went all in with their characters and didn't hold back. They could've, and I'm sure many other famous actors would've, "phoned it in" for a modest budget, streamed movie like this and just relied on the star power alone to make money. These guys certainly didn't do that.

If you want to to watch an extremely well done and terrifying (not "scary" terrifying but terrifying because it's a true story) thriller I recommend this. Just be aware that you might lose some faith in humanity and trust in institutions that really should've known and done better along the way.

Sweet, wholesome documentary.
8 October 2022
Just a nice, chill documentary of Stan and his family in New Zealand and Australia. No "airs", no egos, no fake dramas, just very down to earth all round.

Stan is a bit "celebrity" but only as celebrity as someone in New Zealand can get. Because his family is grounded he is too so he's a nice fella..

Can recommend if you want to have a glimpse into one of New Zealands most popular contemporary singers.

Don't expect fake drama and obviously scripted lines but do expect real emotions concerning family, culture, friendships and work.

I wish Stan and his family all the best in life.

Kia kaha .

Underrated Movie With a Disappointing Ending
7 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I can buy the premise that they've synthesised the chemical that gives the foetus (babies) life. I can buy that it gives ScarJo enhanced brain power and I'll pretend the 10% of brain usage is a thing for this movie.

It loses me a bit when she starts reading minds and defies physics and time but ok, this is sci-fi after all so suspension of disbelief is needed. A lot of suspension of disbelief. That's cool, I can dig it. Just enjoy the great effects.

And then it ends. WTF!

Her final voiceover says, "You were given life a billion years ago, now you know what to do with it."

No we don't! You just turned into a computer and that was it!

I get that Luc Besson probably couldn't think of a better way to end it and ScarJo turning into the internet was supposed to be mind blowing and symbolic somehow but for me it just fell flat. At least show her doing something for humanity with all that power and intellect. I don't know, maybe then it would've been too pretentious. I just feel a bit robbed after all the excellent build up that's all. Maybe they were going to make a sequel.

It also could've done with a better and stronger villain. Maybe the Triad boss could've taken some of the drug too and been more of a threat. Maybe that's too cliche. Again, having a relatively weak villain led to a disappointing ending.

Don't get me wrong, it is a decent sci-fi thriller with good actors, prod values and an interesting premise. I think 7.2 would be a fairer Imdb score. Still worth watching despite the setbacks I've mentioned.

Tomcats (2001)
10/10
Underrated 90's Film From 2001.
7 July 2022
I can't remember where I was when I first saw Tomcats but I remember that I was with some friends and we all thought it was pretty funny.

Much better than any of the American Pie movies, not because it is necessarily more "mature" but because it's aimed at people (mainly dudes) in their early to mid 20's instead of teenagers so the themes are more adult originated.

Fast paced, good prod values, well acted, chuckles and some good lol's throughout and some very attractive women. Not a bad way to kill an hour and a half.

Seriously underrated on Imdb at 5.3, I think it's true score should be around 7.1.

Better than I was expecting...
22 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Mainly due to the low score and pretty scathing reviews this was actually better than I expected.

Prod values, score, cinematography, soundtrack, all on point. Acting was good throughout, except for the big tattoo'd guy but he had about 3 lines so we won't worry about that. Hemsworth was believable as a troubled mad scientist and Teller was believable as the troubled inmate/guinea pig. The female leads were well played also.

Yes, it was predictable. We all knew what was going to happen but there were sufficient twists and pretty original set pieces to make it an interesting journey. It could've gone a lot darker but I'm guessing it went as dark as Netflix would allow which was ok.

It felt like Ex Machina on drugs which could never be a bad thing.

The worst misstep was the injection of humour towards the end which was a bit jarring after the whole movie having a fairly serious tone. Not a deal breaker though.

Overall, good performances from the leads in a fairly well polished flick that looked like it had a healthy budget. People are saying it would've fallen flat without the star power in the leads. Couldn't you say that about pretty much any movie?

Superfast! (2015)
9/10
Funniest movie I've seen in a long time.
20 June 2022
Went in with super low expectations thinking this would be absolute trash. I just assumed it was a super low budget, independent movie and didn't realise it was made by the Scary Movie guys which, if I had known, would've raised my expectations somewhat.

As it was I thought it was pretty good. Yes they couldn't afford to actually crash any cars or use those exploding packs for gunshot wounds but it didn't matter. The spoof style humor was consistent throughout and most of the jokes landed. The acting was decent with no really poor performances, the cars were cool, the women were hot, the prod values were decent and I got quite a few laughs out of it.

What more do you want?!

Another Pixar Classic
14 June 2022
Wow, some real sad sacks here complaining how this movie isn't funny and is too complicated and scary for their toddlers to watch. Well boo hoo.

I thought it was original and brilliant. The way they've intertwined and personified (or rather cartoonified) the emotions is very clever. This isn't a Pixar movie for toddlers, or really anyone under 12, but is much better suited for early to mid teens or really anyone over 12 should find it entertaining. I'm not going to say how unbelievably far past 12 I am but I will say that I found it a hoot.

A simple premise that has been given depth and complexity that isn't dumbed down too much for the toddlers. Enough humour and gags to keep adults happy.

Can definitely recommend for teens and adults alike.

A hidden gem
5 June 2022
Pretty much found this series by accident after looking up Al Murray's YouTube channel. Am up to episode 10 and loving it.

Murray isn't mentioned at all here in New Zealand on mainstream media, maybe because he isn't PC enough, which is a shame as he's very funny. At least we have youtube to get our fix.

This series is like a cross between Bottom and Cheers, well, more like Bottom and quite a bit ruder but funnier for it.

I suspect it has been swept under the carpet because it is so un-pc but that is what makes it so funny. Worth a watch imo.

Good Character Driven Drama
22 May 2022
Good story, good acting, good prod values, good score. What else can I say.

A very nice little character driven drama for a rainy day/evening. The characters are developed well and you really feel emotionally tied to them. There are also actors of all ages and they all do well, very well directed.

I felt emotional when I was supposed to and was engaged throughout. I hope Grace Van Patten and Jovan Adepo keep up the good work and I wish them the best moving forward.

A fairly lame end for what was a funny franchise
10 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After watching 1 and 2 this one was rough imo. No lol's like the first 2 and the kids were terrible, especially Rusty in the first half. He showed a bit of promise in the 3rd act but it was too late to have much effect. He just wasn't believable as Clark's son. The daughter might as well not have been in the movie she was so inconsequential.

Chevy did his usual bumbling antics but you could tell he was over it and wasn't giving it his all. Beverley and the rest of the cast were there.

Being the 4th one they really needed to take it to the next level. Australia would've been good, but Crocodile Dundee had already taken the best Aussie gags. A desert island maybe? I don't know.

They tried with the kids turning "bad" and the damn gag was kinda funny but just not enough for what was initially a hilarious franchise imho.

Solid Action Buddy Treasure Hunting Blockbuster
24 April 2022
Wow, movie goers these days are hard to please.

If the movie is too real and there's a lot of character development then it's too boring and slow. If it's over the top with fast paced action throughout it's unbelievable with one dimensional characters.

I think Uncharted had a great balance of both with sufficient character development, great pacing and yes, over the top action. That's what you go to the movies for isn't it?

Not as bad as I was expecting
7 April 2022
I put this on to have a laugh at some inept and shocking film making but am actually not that shocked. Yes it starts off terribly but as soon as the lead enters it gets better. She is not a bad actress and most of the supporting cast arent terrible either. A couple are terrible though.

Aside from the CGI, the quality of acting, prod values, cinematography and score are about at the level of a BBC crime drama, which is high praise for a movie like this. Basically I have seen much much worse and at least the actors know how to act fairly convincingly. So, on these fronts it isn't too bad at all.

The CGI is atrocious. I know we couldn't expect Jurassic Park levels of CGI but it is 2022 and surely there's a ton of good CGI compositors out there now for a reasonable price. Obviously not. As the movie is based on dinosaurs and it's kind of the theme having bad CGI really lets it down. If you really suspend disbelief you may be able to get past it, we all knew the dino's in Jurrasic Park were fake after all, but they were convincincing when you were immersed in the movie of course.

I guess most of the really bad movies I've seen were from the 90's and 2000's and I haven't seen any low budget modern ones before this. I'm surprised how much the quality of the lowest budget films has wrisen over the last decade or so, if this movie is anything to go by. I supposed good quality film equipent is cheaper, or rather, you can do a lot more with less, including drones and such and learning to act is more accessible.

Anyway, apologies for the non-review that's more of a ramble about modern low budget films.

Such a good movie
26 August 2021
TSS is equally as good as Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy imo so deserves a much higher score than 7.4. It should be a 7.8 to 8 at least.

It's obviously a much different movie than the darker and more serious Batman movies but as far as writing, prod values, pacing, direction, acting and just straight up entertainment goes I think it is equal.

Almost infinitely better than the first Suicide Squad movie and better than most DC movies combined.

Classic Kiwiana
20 August 2021
I suspect a lot of people didn't see or like this film because the subject matter was a bit close to home, especially with the gritty and realistic tone that so many NZ and Aussie movies had in that era with it culminating in Once Were Warriors in New Zealand and Mad Max in Australia with Mad Max going on to be eventually and inevitably Hollywoodised. As raw as Mad Max was I think Warriors would've been too raw for the Yanks. They like their action and drama but it has to be firmly in movie land, don't we all really.

I was 2 when this movie came out here in NZ but watching it now makes me nostalgic for the small towns, old cars and bush which is funny because there's a similar small town and bush about 30 mins drive away, not so many old cars though.

Good trip down memory lane if you grew up in the 80's with solid acting from Bruno and supporting cast members. I vaguely remember it having a bit of a cult following in the 90's along with Goodbye Pork Pie and Came a Hot Friday.

Wholesome and funny take on classic Holmes mythos
27 April 2021
Well, mostly wholesome, except for when Holmes is perving on near naked women of course!

Without a Clue is an entertaining take on the classic Sherlock Holmes genre. Played pretty straight but with tongues firmly in cheek by Cain and Kingsley. Often feeling like a pantomime and incredibly over-acted by pretty much all of the cast which doesn't matter or detract because it just adds to the fun.

Cain & Kingsley virtually just play themselves, or rather spoofs of themselves which is also fine because they're who you've paid to see right?

It feels a bit dated, even for a 1988 movie, as in it feels like it was made in the mid 70's and not nearly 1990. I think the panto feel, over acting and slapstick comedy may have something to do with it.

They looked like they had a lot of fun making it and being genuinely good actors made it fun to watch. Can definitely recommend this hidden classic.

Underrated WW2 film with a twist
7 January 2021
I went into this just knowing it was some sort of WW2 action movie with a twist and I'm glad I did. I was entertained and impressed by the good acting, pacing, writing and especially prod values and effects.

Due to their being no "A-list" actors it didnt feel like a blockbuster per se but the cast did a great job and the prod values were certainly at or close to blockbuster levels. JJ Abrams must've invested quite a lot into this.

I can see why zombie and horror fans might have been disappointed as there was only a smidgen of both, didn't bother me though, as long as I'm entertained I'm happy.

I love the Wolfenstein games and this movie had a similar feel and tone

Jovan Adepo did a great job as the initially apprehensive soldier and Wyatt Russell did great as the seasoned soldier. Two underrated actors with potential to be big stars, but maybe good actors don't really focus on becoming "movie stars" any more and aspire more to getting consistent spots in streaming series. Anyway, they were good and the rest of the cast did well too.

Very good movie overall and definitely better than the 6.6 on IMDb. I think a 7.5 is more fitting imo
