Scavengers Reign (2023)
Amazing writing and animation
I don't normally feel compelled to write a review, but this show is such a breath of fresh air. The writing, the animation, the voice acting. All of it is phenomenal. It's unlike anything out there at the moment. The story is compelling, the characters have real depth. All of the wildlife on Vesta feels unique, and alive. If you can look past the fact that they happened to crash land on a planet that happened to have the correct atmospheric makeup for them to breathe (lol) then this show draws you in, and never feels as if it is expecting you to look past or ignore inconsistencies. If you're a fan of sci-fi, this is definitely worth checking out.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Well done marvel
In my opinion it's not quite as good as Wandavision was. But it's still Marvel doing what they do best, humanizing their characters. Whether that's the hero's or the villains. That's why Marvel continues to succeed while DC struggles to catch up.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Different than Hill House
If you're expecting this to be like the haunting of Hill House then you're going to be disappointed. If you go into it with no expectations then you'll really appreciate the writing and the acting.
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)
Netflix's First Foray Into Choose Your Own Ending Movies
This was Netflix's first choose your own ending movie, and overall they did a good job. My first run through took about an hour and ten minutes, and my second run through took about an hour and forty five minutes. You use your remote/controller to choose from two options at the bottom of the screen that decides where the story goes and what choices the main character makes. While this sounds good on paper, after a while you feel as if you only have the illusion of choice. Luckily, this is Black Mirror and the story of the movie has its own say on the illusion of choice.
This might be the first episode of Black Mirror that doesn't have an obvious piece of technology at the center of it. This is not a bad thing at all though, as this movie tackles a host of questions, such as free will, the illusion of choice, and parallel universes. There are also multiple nods to past Black Mirror episodes. I found three, but I'm sure there are more if you look hard enough.
Overall, the choose your own ending style was interesting and fairly well done for a first attempt, although it did have it's issues. Because of this the story did suffer, and never felt completely cohesive. In typical Black Mirror fashion, this movie still had plenty of thought provoking content, despite the fractured story.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018)
Disappointing
I didn't have especially high hopes for this movie and it still let me down. The camera work and effects were spectacular, but even that plus the amount of starpower on the cast list couldn't save the writing and directing.
Black Mirror: Hang the DJ (2017)
Fantastic
This episode defines everything that Black Mirror is about. Everything is perfectly in place. The pacing is good, humor is in all the right spots, and plot developments happen at just the right time to not only keep your attention, but make it hard to look away.
The biggest reason that this episode is already standing out among every other Black Mirror episode is that it really makes you think. Watchability is important, and this is a great episode even just on the surface, but the fact that I was still thinking about this episode and its real life implications days later shows how well written it really is.
Fantastic episode. 10/10
Black Mirror: USS Callister (2017)
Solid Episode
Without spoilers, I would say that I'd agree with everyone calling this a sister episode to San Junipero. I wouldn't lie and say this is one of my favorite episodes of Black Mirror, but it definitely has its moments. You really feel for all of the characters, at least to some degree, and it interjects humor at just the right times. They could have went with a different direction when writing this episode, but I think that the direction they went keeps things optimistic while possibly introducing newcomers to Black Mirror who might not have started the show otherwise.
Overall, could have been better but it's still a pretty solid episode. 8/10
Black Mirror: Metalhead (2017)
Strangely un black mirror like
This episode did not feel like Black Mirror to me. It does take place in the near future and it does feature technology that could exist, a theme does not seem to run through this episode like it does with all of the others.
I didn't mind that the world you are dropped into is completely unexplained, I didn't even mind the black and white. What I did mind was the experimentation with lower frame rates and orchestral music. These really disrupted the flow of the episode for me, and didn't really affect the tension they were supposed to induce. Although these things did hinder the experience somewhat, I didn't take any stars away for this because I can appreciate experimentation even though I didn't enjoy it in this particular episode.
Unlike other Black Mirror episodes, once this one ends you are left feeling unmoved by the story. As I mentioned earlier, there doesn't seem to be an obvious theme. Because of this, once the episode ends you are unsure what was to be learned and unsure of how to feel about the story. 7/10
Black Mirror: Crocodile (2017)
Solid Episode
Really solid Episode. Even though this is one of the longer episodes of season 4 at 59 minutes, the pacing was so well done that every moment feels as tense as the last. This is classic black mirror, giving you a glimpse into the not so distant future, leaving you with that feeling afterward like only Black Mirror can. 8/10
Black Mirror: Arkangel (2017)
Subpar by black mirror standards
I had really high hopes for this episode. Its premise is fantastic. A service that lets you see your child's exact location and even see through their eyes? But it just didn't deliver. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't a bad episode. But it doesn't stack up to Black Mirror's other episodes. The ending was also predictable and somewhat bland. 7/10
