Personally I consider it Brooks' masterpiece, the perfect Mel Brooks Film, the peak of his comic generous and possibly the funniest movie ever made.
Parrodying almost every Hitchcock film, as well as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Wizard of Oz, The Spy Who Loved Me and Blowup, making there so many jokes and cross references that you have to watch it 3 times to get and notice all of them. on top of that is the usual Brooks insanity and Jew jokes that just make you go this movie is so Mel.
Before seeing this film, it is not necessary and i had not seen them, but I recommend watching these Hitchcock films: Spellbound, Vertigo, Phsyco, The Birds, North by Northwest, The Ring, The Thirty-Nine Steps, Dial M for Murder and Family Plot. These films should help you get many jokes not all or even most but many.
All together this film is classic Mel and is necessary viewing for anyone with a sense of humor.
