Karen's Room (2013)
let down by poor performances
I liked the premise of this film, but it is let down by dull, unengaging performances that fail to convince. The actors, particularly Lauren Shotton as the female lead, get the tone entirely wrong and ruin the atmosphere of the film, turning what should have been an interesting and unusual short that draws in the viewer into a silly childish romp.
Bad acting aside there is little to criticise in the film. The production values are unremarkable, but at least the film-makers were sensible enough to work within what was obviously a tiny budget.
Not really worthwhile as it stands, but might have been diverting with better actors.
Spectre (2015)
Time to call it a day on Bond movies
Despite a huge budget, Spectre is an absolutely awful film with little to recommend it. The film isn't even memorable for any exciting action scenes, set pieces or stuntwork.
At least in the past, Bond delivered a thrill or two. Unfortunately the Daniel Craig efforts can't even manage that.
The movie is plain boring, not just because of the lacklustre action, but also because of the dreadful, uninteresting pedestrian script, the slowdown pacing and some very bland performances.
The title song - which amazingly won an Oscar - is diabolical.
If this is the best that the film makers can churn out then the best thing would be for them to stop making them. They have had a good run,.but it.is time for it to end.
Dad's Army (2016)
Far better than I expected
The idea of making a Dad's Army movie in 2016 was a.bizarre one and when first announced I couldn't see how the TV series of many decades ago could be updated.
The film itself is a pleasant surprise, with several laugh out loud moments and many little touches that provide a chuckle or amused smirk.
The cast is mostly first rate. Some off the wall casting really works with the standout performances being those of Toby Jones as Captain Mannerism and the sublime Bill Nighy as Sergeant Wilson.
The only main cast member who doesn't work is Tom Courtney as Jones. As with other Courtney performances he simply lacks the warmth of the television version of the character.
Worth a watch.
Full English Breakfast (2014)
This breakfast gave me salmonella
What a terrible load of old rubbish. Dave Courtney commits yet another crime against the film industry, abetted by a terrible script, lame direction and the acting efforts of Bannerman ( where am I?) andLucy Drive ( I had a lobotomy but it doesn't affect my acting). No plot, no suspense, no action, the entire thing is like wading through treacle,
I can't remember a worse feature film, and the director (I can't even be bothered to scroll up to check his name), takes his rightful place alongside the bottom of the barrel scrapers like Liam Galvin, Drew Cunningham and Neil Jones.
Might be worth a viewing with plenty of friends and even more beer, under those circumstances it might be fun, but if you are looking for a gangster movie or a thriller then avoid this like the rancid offering that it is.
