The Crowd (1928)
The Best
This has to be w/ out a doubt my favorite film of all time (althought Metropolis is a very close second). What King Vidor brought to the silver screen when he made this film was pure genius. Few films compare to this one. The Techniques used are way ahead of their time and reminiscent of few directors before him. Not even Griffith could obtain such amazing crowd footage as Vidor did. The story line is one that we can still relate to today, wanting to achieve our dreams but just falling short. Today it's called depression or something of the sort but then in an age of new development it was different. Not being able to achieve greatness wasn't uncommon but it felt that way. And the character in this film is no exception, I truly recommend this film to anyone who doesn't mind a good drama and to anyone who wants to see what life was like in the late 1920's.
Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl (1919)
A Must See Film
Although I've read in other comments on this site that D.W. Griffith changed the story "The Chink and the Child" to make this film it doesn't bother me a bit. In fact most of the literature turned into to film, now and then, has been modified in some way shape or form. Usually nothing is to exact specifications and most directors find that it's much easier to modify it than keep the entire story intact. This film offed a glimpse to viewers of 1919 of a world that few of the talked about but knew existed. Artistically D.W. was ahead of his time bringing to the screen little know pieces of literature like this. And this particular story is one that is still familiar today. Abuse, and interracial love are two subjects still very prevalent in today's society. And so is the very faint idea of love and kindness which this film has much of. I think we could all learn from this film. It is a very worthwhile movie and I recommend it.
Chelovek s kino-apparatom (1929)
One of the Greatest Films Ever
I thought this film was a great silent documentary piece. I thought the music paired well w/ the films rapid movement of shots. It gives you a awesome glimpse of everyday life in the soviet union in 1929. Many may disregard this film as slow or boring but I believe that if they truly gave it a try they would realize what genius it is. As the site says it was truly before it's time.So many of the techniques used in this film are extremely revolutionary and probably set the standards for film today I just hope you will take the time to enjoy this film. It's one of my favorite movies of all time and maybe it will become yours as well.
