Trainwreck (2015)
Liked this movie, and think it's a great start for Amy Schumer
I'm in my 50s, so some of the parts made me realize this (what I mean is the younger generations talks more openly and freely about a lot of things that in my day were just not spoken about in public). However, I loved this movie. The opening was done in a creative way and set the tone perfectly for the rest of the movie, and let us understand why Amy Shcumer's character was doing the things she was. Many would say her behavior was self loathing or self destructive, but I didn't see it that way. She, like many women in the big city, was trying to experience all she could and find her way. It may not have been the 'normal' way, but she had to walk that road. The movie was creative, funny and heartfelt. All the performances were great. There were a few scenes, as when she and her sister were looking at a photo of their mother and reminiscing about her that I could have skipped, but overall this movie shows that Amy Schumer, paired with these good actors and director, has a bright future.
Mother of George (2013)
Superb Acting, Lingering Movie
I rarely want to write reviews about films, but after having seen 'Mother of George' yesterday, I feel compelled to do so. The acting in this movie was superb. I spent years with Nigerian folks, and the way the characters made certain sounds, hard to describe, but Uh- Uh, the way Nigerians do, or sucking in at the teeth, another sound, perhaps unknowingly, I've hear Nigerians, especially Yoruba, make over and over. The accents were also very well done. The film is heavy with close-ups, which are appropriate to convey the emotion of the characters....the burden of the newlywed wife, the claustrophobic working conditions of the husband and his brother, and the stern nature of the husband's mother. This is not a 'Hollywood' movie. The pace may seem slow to many. However, if you want to see an excellently acted film with wonderful cinematography, I highly recommend this movie.
The Loneliest Planet (2011)
GGBernal's acting skills under utilized
Gael Garcia Bernal is one of my favorite actors,so I was looking forward to seeing this film. His superb acting skills were so under utilized. The film dragged on and on, and even the pivotal scene didn't seem to mesh with the movie. Another gripe is with the actress playing his love interest. I couldn't put my finger on why I couldn't believe she was 'American' as the film would have viewers believe. It may sound crass, but most Americans, because they smile so much, would at any cost have had their teeth fixed. She is a beautiful and attractive woman, but the condition of her teeth made the idea that she was from the US ring false, even though her English accent was North American.
