The Boss (2016)
I wanna be a Darnell's Darling!
Definitely worth the watch! Some parts were quirky but overall, I loved this movie!!!
I found it oddly inspiring! I can't explain it but when she makes her comeback, it's amazing -- you almost feel like anything is possible. No matter what!
The characters offered a nice balance and the banter between them wasn't too cringe-worthy (I was expecting it to be very much so.) I'm glad they cast who they cast because every one of them did a fantastic job.
Melissa is a genius. I don't classify myself as a "fan" but I have to give props where they're due. And for this character, they're more than due.
I thought the ending fight scene was overkill but that's really the only part I didn't like. The street fight scene had me absolutely rolling -- the car on fire, nice touch.
Plus, TYRION! <3
Gods of Egypt (2016)
Meh. . .
It's so much easier to write a horrible review than to explain why a movie is good. That said, this movie was good for me but I realize this movie may be an acquired taste and therefore, not up everyone's alley.
If you keep the thought of Nephillim (google it) in the back of your head while watching, this movie is entertaining. I will agree with everyone else -- it's not at all historically accurate. It's a fantasy movie, it's not supposed to be realistic. So, if you're looking for an accurate representation, this movie isn't it.
If you want to watch some creative plays on ancient themes, give this movie a chance. It's certainly different which is always a crap shoot in terms of guessing whether someone else will like it or not. I did but I'm into off the beaten path productions. If you like the occasional out there movie and don't walk into it with great expectations, this movie may be a good watch for you.
I thought the characters and the bantering between them made this movie worth the watch. Contrary to many other reviews, I thought the height difference (you'll see) was perfect based on the historical assumption that they were 15 to 30 feet tall.
I would recommend this movie when you're in the mood to escape from the usual.
London Has Fallen (2016)
Lather, Rinse, Repeat
This movie. . . where to begin?
First, don't expect anything you haven't already seen 10,000 times in every other "action" flick. Seriously. Hollywood has officially run out of ideas and this movie utterly proves it. All this movie did was recycle the same old played out script, plot and action scenes right down to the bad guys, the revenge, the corrupt top secret agent guy and the impossible and unrealistic escape from danger.
The action scenes were okay but nothing out of the ordinary. All the usual landmarks that one would suspect were taken out in this movie which brought the yawn factor up to an 11, at least.
The cast was this movie's only and I mean ONLY redeeming quality but they weren't even really used to their potential. Every one of them could do better than this movie. (I blame the script and the lack of an original plot, not the actors.)
That said, I should warn you that a 4 hour documentary on reforming tax law or perhaps the formation of a snowflake would be FAR more entertaining than London has Fallen.
Don't waste your money nor your time.
Jeruzalem (2015)
If there's nothing else to watch whatsoever...
Oh boy, where to begin. Spoilers abound.
If you keep the expectations to a minimum, you won't be disappointed. It starts off with an impressive nod to Google Glass (now, I actually want one) and a brief description of the basic characters. For about the first 20 to 30 minutes of the film, there's really nothing too exciting.
There was nothing unique or interesting about any of the characters. In fact, I can't remember any of their names. They could have elaborated on any of their backstories to at least give them SOME substance. We get it. They're young and they want to party. That's only been done about a gazillion times in every other "cam" movie out there.
When they FINALLY get to where they're going, the movie starts to get interesting. They mention something called the Jerusalem Syndrome which as it so happens is actually a real thing. (I looked it up. Hey, you learn something new every day, right?)
Chaos ensues and the 'plot', if you want to call it that, finally picks up some steam. (I'd say that steam was more like the puff of a teapot but steam nonetheless.) The CGI and special effects weren't all that spectacular. At some points where the demons were running abound, our characters didn't act particularly shocked, shaken and in soiled drawers.
They could have really taken this movie to great places but as I've already mentioned, the preview turned out to be better than the movie itself. I actually bet my kid that at the end, we'd find out that this whole thing was about one of the characters experiencing Jerusalem Syndrome. That would have been a much better ending -- just my opinion. (Considering the twist ending is just as played out as partying young adults, that should tell you something).
The best part of the movie was learning about Jerusalem Syndrome and of course, the scenery of the city itself was SPECTACULAR. This, in my humble opinion are the movie's only redeeming qualities.
If there's a sequel, there's going to have to be some better special effects and dialog to make it worth the watch.
