Very Nice Surprise
14 February 2022
A nice story that slowly builds to a rousing conclusion.

The story takes some surprising turns, always maintaining consistentcy with the story and characters. I often found myself saying 'wow, that was a surprised, but that makes sense'.

Reacher (2022– )
4/10
Same old
9 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Reacher travels light, not even a toothbrush or clean underwear or hotel reservations.

He meets some people, Jokes about Reachers size.

Yada yada, big fight, dead and broken bad guys.

Repeat every 2 minutes.

As the story goes on more more plot points are added and more characters including a romantic interest.

Builds toward the inevitable showdown.

Did anybody else see a strong resemblance between Reacher and Putty from Seinfeld (Patrick Warburton)? The grin, the walk.

The Bureau (2015–2020)
6/10
Interesting, confusing
6 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
All in all I think the Bureau was above average compared to other tv series. After watching all of the episodes I noticed that I hadn't ever used the fast forward button so that's a sign that it held my attention. Also it seemed even over the 5 seasons compared to many shows that quickly run out of interesting plot lines.

The actors were more than competent. The frequent shifts to exotic locations helped to keep it moving.

At a few points, and in the end I was confused. The movie makes a point that the lead character is evil and destroys the people around him. I didn't see that. He seemed to be intent on doing his job until love got in the way, then he tried to do the best he could.

There weren't a lot of surprises, just a nice competent show.

Restless (2012 TV Movie)
3/10
Can someone explain it to me?
29 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For three hours we enjoyed being transported back to a historic time, the sets, costumes. Everyone smoked and drank, there were mens clubs, classic cars, double breasted suits, men's hats and secret passwords. And Haley Atwell was saving the world.

Lots of people got shot for some reason. An entire team of spies was 'rolled up'. Ollie had to be killed. And decades later someone was coming to kill Eva for some reason that I don't understand.

For all the money and effort that went into this production is it too much to ask for someone to read the script and make sure it makes sense?

Mank (2020)
2/10
A Beweldering Unwatchable Mess
7 December 2020
Who approved release of this movie? What were they thinking?

The goal of Mank seems to be for talented actors like Gary Oldman to race across the stage spitting out inside Hollywood references as quickly as possible. The dialogue is strangely disconnected from the script, inflections and pacing are either missing or wrong for the content. Names of 1940's Hollywood players are pulled out of the air for a one-time impact, ie: I had dinner with ?F. Scott Fitzgerald and he said you were a drunk. Sadly, the visuals were equally bad, like Gary Oldman stumbling and falling in a drunken stupor. Shrill, hectic, lacking cohernce, a mess. And a waste of a lot of talent. Save yourself some grief and re-watch Once upon a Time in Hollywood.

Detours (II) (2016)
Almost nice
15 December 2019
Detours is a pleasant chic flick. My wife laughed and choked up at the touching scenes.

We both thought it had potential to be much more but the terrible direction spoiled it. Characters were constantly saying their lines as if they were reading a chart at the eye doctor. Dan's inflections seemed like he was in a different movie. He often smiled for no reason. Same for all the other characters that popped up The cop, the boyfriend, the girlfriends all were monotone, without energy or context.

It was Tara Westwood that kept us interested. She was funny and charming and sexy.

Jack Ryan (2018–2023)

Lots to like
7 September 2018
I kinda liked this series. It had a fast pace, more complex terror plots than unusual and lots of beautiful locales.. Contrary to many of the reviews here, I thought the story was interesting, had lots of plot twists and made sense. There were a few points that I thought would not bear up to scrutiny but the story was moving so fast that it didn't matter. What I especially didn't like was the casting. Ryan had a hang-dog face that defied my attempts to connect with him, his girlfriend came across like a vapid college girl and Greer looked exactly like a BBQ guy. Everything Greer said seemed hokey and superfluous. Suliman was believable. We recently saw The Hunt for Red October and the lead characters there were amazing. James Earl Jones had all the gravitas of an Admiral. Sean Connery looked every bit the commander of an atomic sub. Same for Scott Glenn.

Tamborine (2018 TV Special)

Some fun, much sadness
19 February 2018
We laughed a few times like the comments about 'bad apples'--pilots and cops. But Chris looked old and tired. He seemed to be having trouble remembering his lines, like he didn't care enough to memorize the show. His stage presence was very disappointing, he was plodding without any of the energy that used to highlight his jokes. The material seemed really flat. For anyone that watches 'Death in Paradise' both my wife and I thought he looked like The Commissioner (Don Warrington).

Godless (2017)
5/10
Amost good
30 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers Ahead:::

Godless was easy on the eyes, beautiful countryside, which for some reason kept toggling between color and black and white. A lot of the artifacts like the wagons looked authentic. I kept thinking that something important was just about to happen, but it never did until the totally predictable final gunfight between the outlaws and the townsfolk.

I wont repeat whats in the other reviews, here's what I'd like to add. I liked the characters but was put off by the 2017 morality. Everyone was a lesbian or bi racial or a whore who saved her money and became a wealthy school teacher. Just your average western town. For all the background on the characters, I was left with some really big questions like why were those men following Jeff Daniels all those years? They didn't seem to have possession or wives or girlfriends or houses. They just rode around year after year hurting people. Why? They didn't even have back up horses or a wagon full of food. Alice had a ranch or farm but, like all the others, she didn't grown any crops. She had no employees, she just spent her time digging wells and fixing fences. Why? When the finale started, all the hard tough villains rode into a trap. And stayed there. No one sought cover. A couple charged the townspeople but most just stood around waiting to get shot while the inexperienced women were smart enough to hide behind fortifications. In the finale Jeff Daniels kinda sat on his horse looking around amid seemingly thousands of rounds fired at his brigade. Wouldn't most of the bullets been aimed at him? During the movie Jeff Daniels starts as a crazy sadist roaring his anger at Roy Goode. Then he has scenes where he's crazily kind ie: he and his men surround the lone sheriff who swears to kill them but they let him walk away? For a man that destroyed a whole town this seems out of character. Speaking of the sheriff, much was made of his going blind. Then someone sells him 'spectacles' and he's amazed that he can see again. WTF! He never heard of glasses (even in 1865)? Yet they are so common that a man he casually bumps into happens to have a pair for sale in his pocket. I found that some of the characters tried too hard to have an accent and wound up sounding like a member of an 8th grade Christmas play. People kept ignoring their gunshot wounds. I imagine that if I had a gun shot wound in my stomach I'd be rolling on the ground screaming for the 1865 equivalent of morphine, but none of these characters ever did. Michelle Dockery was beautiful and enigmatic but in the end her character was hollow.
