Dark Tourist (2018)
Interesting show, good host,
I was intrigued by this show from the very moment it popped up on Netflix. I had it on My List for a couple of months and thought of giving it a go recently (no particular reason for the delay).
Show: The idea behind the show is very captivating. We are talking about a journalist from New Zealand, who goes to the creepiest and darkest "tourist" destinations on Earth; all those destinations many people would avoid.
Destinations: This is were for me the show loses a little of its charm. I would have picked the destinations a little better. Some of the things the host does are simply weird touristic tours. For instance:
- in the Latin American episide: the pablo escobar tour is a common tourist tour in Medellin. The only creepy thing about it was the meeting up with Popeye, which could also be a coincidence. But whoever went to Medellin know how popular these tours are. You want real dark tourism? Then you go to Honduras and meet up with sicario of the "Maras", you go and look for the ruins of cartel airplanes underwater, etc.
- in the US episode: I think they could've just skipped this one. The JFK and the serial killer thing were simply tourist crap, just like the Jack the Ripper Tour in London... it felt like an live TripAdvisor review of the tours. It would've been cooler to go and visit Alcatraz. The vampire "saga" was simply a bunch of outcasts from society, who don't know how to fit in so they think they are vampires. Want a tip David for some dark tourism in the US? Area 51 is a good start, dive into some KKK cult, and stuff like that.
- in the japanese episode: This was truly a good episode apart form the robot hotel thing, which just wasn't dark at all, just weird.
So yes: all in all, great show, which I enjoyed. I hope they renew t for a second season but put some more effort in the destinations. We want to see true dark stuff. Things you cannot just find on youtube.
Host: I enjoyed David. I saw a normal, rational and intelligent person trying out this weird stuff and was of the same opinion most of times. People criticising because he didn't "grow" into the phenomenon of dark tourism, well I would'nt have either, so... I was happy to see a normal and prepared journalist analysing dark tourism and not some sort of Bear Grylls of dark tourism which is passionate about this stuff.
So, I wish they renew this show, and I wish I don't have to see anymore of those weird, creepy, cringing tours of the Western world.
First Team: Juventus (2018)
Mazing inside look for every football fan
I love this title and am waiting for the next episodes to come out. I've always craved for a series, similar to the one on Liverpool, which shows the human side behind these stars, they're great commitment to the sport and of course their attachment to a huge club like Juventus...
I'm also happy they chose this team, because unlike other elite teams, Juventus is literally impregnated with history and tradition. Let us not forget that Juventu has been in the hands of the Agnelli family since 1923 when FIAT owner Edoardo Agnelli bought the club. It makes the family the longest lasting ownership in any sports franchise globally. It has an outstanding competent management and let's face it... it's a cool name.
I might have liked to see something about their scandal in 2006 behind the scenes. From what I read there was a second trial a couple of years later, in which the team was actually declared NOT guilty for most of the convictions. A little sad, that the media did not report these turn in the facts as it should... On the other hand, I understand maybe Juventus just wants to move on... Well, they're doing it greatly.
All in all, 10/10 for the series, can't wait for more episodes.
Annihilation (2018)
Thought-Provoking, yet some blurry sides
First I really want to write down the first thought that popped into my mind right after the lighthouse was burning: Why don't nuke it? It being an american movie I would have thought that the first reaction by the government would have been bomb it or do something similar. I mean, it's in our nature, isn't it? You find something nyou don't know or understand, so you poke it.
However, I must admit I really enjoyed the movie. I think it is thought-provoking in the sense that everything has a meaning and the entire movie is a metaphor. Everything, every movement, every word, echoes into another scene. The way the director did the movie is just fantastic... finally, I would add. I've been waiting a while for this. It is not an easy movie to understand, but I guess that's the point.
Tomb Raider (2018)
Finally something vaguely similar to the game
Let me start by saying that I would give this movie a solid 7.5-8-0, or at least that uis what I'm hoping this movie will get eventually once its hype fades off.
I'm giving it a 10 because I'm really hoping the film industry finally understands that to create a good movie out a video game you need to "play" the video game. This is the first time I actually see some lines of the game in the movie. Even though they shifted slightly from th main plot I think I still honors it... everytime I hear a video game fan saying "oh, but it's not even close to the game" I smile. I smile because it's quite obvious that the game will have much more depth, e.g. Tomb Raider (2013) averages more than 20 hours of gameplay and main story. I'll leave it there... I think this time Hollywood understood... and they're trying to make it up to the past "crap". Now let's hope for a good "Uncharted", "Witcher" and, of course, The Last of Us".
