The Last Song (2010)
Garbage
This is a movie that is absolutely predictable, badly acted and difficult to endure. Miley Cyrus's acting is honestly so awful that it is impossible to forget for even a moment that her entire career is funded by her father. Even the background music is overdone and obvious, like a bad soap opera. There is nothing about this movie that is original - think of almost any cliché and it is in this movie. I tried to sit through it non-judgmentally, thinking that I may have been too harsh about Miley Cyrus and the whole "Disney/Hanna Montana" debacle, and I thought that just maybe, Miley (and her father's choices) might have improved with time... but - no. No spoilers here - it is too easy, just think of any bad movie plot you have ever seen, and it is thrown into this movie..
It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time (1975)
Great actors, TERRIBLE movie!
I might have given it a higher rating, if there was any way to figure out what was going on. Stephanie Powers is gorgeous. Yvonne DeCarlo has a great expressive face, that is wonderful to see. A young John Candy has a minor role, which was kind of fun. Some of the outfits and 1970's fashions were really awesome. Unfortunately, the plot is truly incomprehensible. The direction is uneven, at best. The script is deranged - there does not appear to be a real plot at all. I got to the last scene, and still did not know what the point of this movie was. All I can say is, it was a waste of a dollar at Walmart. Not to mention an hour and a half of my time. I cannot believe that a studio paid to have this movie made, let alone releasing it on DVD.
Riding the Bullet (2004)
People can be pretty snobbish, this is honestly quite good
This movie keeps you interested. The young actor Jonathan Jackson is great to watch, very expressive. Barbara Hershey is also wonderful to see. There are moments of pathos that sometime are a bit over the top. As usual. Stephen King has a tendency to be overly nostalgic, but that is to be expected. Stephen King fans will not mind, it is standard. My family and I enjoyed this movie. We felt that it was well worth the time. I think that perhaps the previous posters were being too critical. The flashbacks were sometimes a bit confusing, but if you pay attention, it makes sense. Rent it, check it out. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
Not Bad!
Yes, it was hackneyed, in parts. Yes, there are repetitious plot angles, it is part of the "prophesy" thing. Come on people, it is the third installment, and the whole movie is about re-writing the future! However-I liked the female robot/terminator character. I also liked how all the previous hints and possibilities for the future were brought in. I liked how it was wrapped up. It made sense, and was easy to follow. Arnold has great physical presence in this film, and does a great job. After all, this is not rocket science, it is only pretending to be. It is also not a religion (unless you are Tom Cruise), so lighten up-it's a movie, grab some popcorn and enjoy it!
Rocky V (1990)
Really-NOT BAD!!!!
OK, this is another Rocky movie using the standard formula, but it still strikes a chord. The story resonated with me, as it is representative of how decent people will devote time and energy to jobs, or outside influences that do not deserve it. There are important family issues addressed, and I think that is valuable as well. While this particular movie might not be the best in the genre, it still evokes a lump in the throat, and is easy to watch. I think that many of the reviewers were a bit harsh in their assessments. This movie represents a part of the story of Rocky Balboa, and contains interesting psychological commentary. It is possible that the values that are represented in this film were not fully appreciated in the 90's, but that are becoming more significant in the turbulent times of today. Perhaps Sylvester Stallone's timeless message about the importance of "family" needs to be heard again. This movie is well worth your time, at least once.
Fear of the Dark (2003)
Made for TV?
Complete waste of time...comes off like a "Made for the Disney Channel" kind of horror film...some good special effects, but nothing that would scare anyone over the age of 5. I don't remember this film being released to theaters, so I am thinking it must have gone straight to video. I tried really hard, but I could not get through it all. It starts out with a sense of possibility, I even began to compare the premise with "The Ring", but it loses steam very quickly and feels like a prime-time sitcom trying to be scary. Nice sets and good looking characters, but no real depth. It might be suitable for a pre-teen Halloween party - at least it is a PG-13, so that might get their attention. Linda Purl looks great, though.
