Sunrise (II) (2024)

A solid '5'.... Excruciatingly slow at times
20 January 2024
Sat down to watched this tonight and was very excited at both the premise and, the both Guy Pierce and Pettyfur were starring.

While production is decent, acting is very good (with some dialogue & scenes being excellent) - this is Guy Pierce, after all, even great acting cannot salvage what is ultimately an extremely boring movie overall.

The title of the movie is also very confusing not to mention the story itself. There are a number of plot holes which leave the viewer asking obvious questions, for which, there are no answers in the themes nor in the dialogue to explain.

All of this while trying not to fall asleep at what are some extremely long, completely unnecessary & repetitive scenes. Excruciatingly long camera pans of objects such as a chain, wind up just being utterly boring instead of building tension or fear

Outside of Pierce's acting or a desire to take a nap, I would skip this one entirely tbh. 5/10 for the acting & cinematography.

Gen V: Jumanji (2023)
Season 1, Episode 6
5/10
Gen-B (boring)
20 October 2023
Season started great - action, plot development, drama, comedy..

And then.. the last two episodes (5 and now 6) - dreadful. BORING.

A sign of a great show is when every scene advances the plot. There is no unnecessary soap operatic scenes, going in circles (as in episode 5 - "I can't remember", ten minutes later "I can't remember"), over and over.

You can't call it "character development" either. Said simply - it draaaaaags. HARD.

I left for 10 minutes during both episode 5 and episode 6 - came back - missed nothing. That is how you know a show is going down the drain.

The content from both episodes could have been done in 20 minutes. Not 2 hours. If you only have 6 episodes in a season but they are awesome - great!

But don't add these boring af "filler" episodes just to get to 8 or 10 episodes. I'll watch one more episode but if it's like the last two it will be "goodbye Gen-B."

Black Mirror: Mazey Day (2023)
Season 6, Episode 4
10/10
Excellent episode..very narrow "Not Black Mirror" reviews are missing the point...
24 June 2023
Black Mirror is an anthology series which explores and shines a light on, the dark side of (hu)mankind, technology and society.

In keeping with this theme, the Mazey Day episode was a truly magnificent criticism on our society's voracious appetite for human tragedy.

This tragedy is provided on a daily basis by none other than our vicarious "celebrity photographers", colloquially know as "paparazzi" - around the world - every...single...day.

Don't listen to the reviewers with the narrow view that Black Mirror should be/is only based on technology - it's SO much more than that.

Mazey Day was classic Black Mirror - LOVED it -keep an open mind and you will too - enjoy !! 10/10.

Superb
5 September 2022
I don't know what show the others were watching - in a word, after two episodes - magnificent.

Because of the low ratings and reviews I felt compelled to write my own.

Although perhaps not remaining 100% true to lore from the Simarillion, where Rings of Power succeeds is not only capturing the beauty of Middle Earth but in surpassing that which was on display in LoTR.

For example, the items of Elven craft. The Simarils hammer, the elven armor, the dwarven mountain kingdom of Kurim-Dum at its apex of opulence - breathtaking in it's splendor. The viewer feels completely transported.

These fine details however, would go unnoticed if not for the acting - which is exquisite. Each character, each character is completely brought to life; the elves, harfoots, dwarves, human are so distinct - which is an absolute must, if this show was to have a prayer of holding a candle to LoTR. I argue the challenge was not only met, but some of the artistic touches and sets actually surpass LoTR in this writer's humble opinion.

These effects and artistic costume flourishes were brought to life so well in LOTR I feared that Rings of Power wouldn't be able the capture the same essence of elves, dwarves, etc as well as Jackson did in LoTR. But, I feared for nothing because the acting is superb and production, makeup and costumes are outstanding.

This show is the whole package; acting, production, direction, editing, music, CGI - it's all too notch. If you are a fan of the LoTR you will not be disappointed with RoP.

I can only surmise that any low ratings on IMDb are from folks who thought that Frodo or Sam should pop out from behind a tree and were disappointed. RoP does one better however - I was absolutely mesmerized by the young Galadriel and Elrond.

Can't wait for more! Highly recommend..

Waste of a season?
9 July 2022
The "lunchbag letdown" should be the name of the S3 finale episode.

Why is this episode rated so high, you guys? Did I watch an "alternate ending" episode, where everyone lives happily ever after and the plot is not advanced whatsoever

Beyond disappointed.

This is how iconic series' turn into complete garbage. Cash grab versus legendary status. Brutal !

Ms. Marvel (2022)
5/10
Mediocre - and that's being a little generous. Here's why ...
23 June 2022
The story is boring.

The lead is sweet, endearing and a good actress. But even the lead can't save this extremely boring storyline and awful special effects. I have a 8K QLED TV so trust me when I say they are awful.

A decent entry for small children and perhaps east asians. There are alot of Bollywood references, for example, that I didn't understand. Because I couldn't relate to the references I felt further divorced from the story as the episodes wore on.

I think everyone would agree that Marvel has set the bar pretty high, with all their prior entries for both film and television.

Sadly, this is the first entry for Marvel that I can confidently say just did not measure up.

Proof IMDb ratings can be heavily skewed..?
28 December 2021
As many people already noted - this film is awful.

I usually always use IMDb ratings to judge the caliber of any film. But sometimes, sadly, they can be dead wrong. Not often but certainly wrong in the case of this film.

High schools make better productions (no exaggeration). The dialogue is cringeworthy, direction disjointed, acting is absolutely atrocious.

I kid you not, my 7 year old repeating the lines would be more believable. The acting is so bad you feel uncomfortable and embarrassed even watching it.

I rated it 2 stars - one for making it on IMDb to be rated and another one for, somehow, managing to get this garbage released.

Avoid this film - it managed to suck 15 minutes out of my life, heed this warning and do not make the same mistake.

American Horror Story: The Future Perfect (2021)
Season 10, Episode 10

AHS ends it's decadal season with a whimper...
21 October 2021
What began as a roaring new take on horror by using an anthology format which radiated originality by using strong character driven drama combined with no holds barred creative storytelling has ended its decadal season with a minute whimper.

Season 10 of AHS when compared to how it began, is almost unrecognizable. Although the acting remains strong, the source material has become god awful.

You could have missed every episode in the second half of the season "Death Valley" and missed NOTHING by the finale.

On the bright side, Red Tide salvaged what would otherwise have been a complete disaster of a season and offered a glimmer of hope, of a possible return to form for AHS 11, 12, 13.

Lessons learned - never do a double feature again (ever). Let "Death Valley" be the example of what NOT to do. There was absolutely no story arc whatsoever, the characters were one dimensional, vapid & charactiture'ish (looking at you Nixon)...I could go on and on, but I'll end with - just awful. It completely stank. Stank.

When it's good it's great , however..
27 September 2021
Keeping this short and sweet - this series scares the hell out of you. But, unfortunately the characters tend to go on never ending diatribes at different intervals which SLOWS the series to a grinding halt.

Luckily, there aren't enough of these to completely ruin the series but it could have been a 9/10 if it had minimized them and advanced the plot instead.

Highly encourage fast forwarding through these (many) - they do not advance the plot nor character elements so you won't miss anything and will likely find the series the faster pace it could and should have been.

And finally! An original 'take' on a creature done many times and many ways but here, reinvented in a frighteningly original (and brutal) way. Bravo !

As it is, with poor editing included it's a rock solid 7/10 - highly recommend for any horror fans out there - this won't disappoint !

Haunting

An excellent film by Jane Compion with a riveting performance from Cumberbatch.

Thought provoking, eerie, menacing yet beautiful, Compion uses the Montana landscape through various seasons like an additional character in the film. Always watching, not passing judgement but aware of all actions and intent.

An excellent piece of cinema for the intellectual observer. Very well done 8/10.

Outstanding
20 June 2021
Best narco documentary on television today.

There has not been a documentary in recent memory which exposes the global landscape of narcotrafficing and organized crime from its inception up to NOW - 2021.

Long overdue and the first two seasons are executed absolutely brilliantly - outstanding 10/10.

Cannot wait for future seasons! Highly recommend.

Horrible
23 April 2021
How far Ryan Phillippe has fallen, my goodness.

There is not one redeemable factor in this film . The direction, editing, camera work - nauseating. Literally. The way the camera moves and cuts makes one feel sick to their stomach.

The acting? Laughable. I can't believe whoever made this piece of crap screened it when completed and thought "yeah this is good". It's not even so bad it's good, just bad. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Thank me later.

"Creme de la creme" true crime series
23 April 2021
Superb true crime series - this is a very, very, very good show. Superb production, editing, research, everything.

Each episode is presented in format where there are interviews with the original detectives/federal agents, review of each crime scene, clues found, all while tracking the escalation of crimes which eventually leave no doubt in detective/agents minds: a serial killer is at work.

Family members are also interviewed along with survivors coupled with criminal psychiatry considerations to better understand each killer's "mark" - the trophy or pattern that makes each serial killer unique.

This show has it ALL - honestly one of the best true crime shows I've watched in years. Excellent series, bravo, keep them coming!!!

"Learn powerful business lessons.." from who?!
15 April 2021
This guy poses in his underwear, works out, makes a few movies and now we're supposed to "learn powerful business lessons" from him? I mean good for him but...

Having watched the show, I'd garner better business lessons from a chimp. "I'm learning everything as I go..." How insightful Mark...powerful indeed.

The fact that the only business we even know (or have ever even heard of) from Mark Wahlberg is "Wahlburgers" is a testament to his celebrity - not his business talent.

He lets us know early in the first episode he has about a gazillion other business ventures. You've never heard of them. I'm sure he's hoping this excuse for a show changes that.

If not, they will soon be a gazillion failed business ventures.

This show is a love letter to Mark Wahlberg's ego. From Mark Wahlberg's ego.

So far so good!
28 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ive read alot about Gacy over the years but this docuseries is intriguing in that you actually hear Gacy's side along with his reasons for denial (which are crazy and absurd - "rotten clay" so I used "700-800 pounds of Lyme" to "sweeten the clay"!!!!)

If you enjoy true crime and find serial killers intriguing this is a gem of a limited series.

Well put together production, fascinating story & it moves at a good clip - recommend.

Awesome movie
6 February 2021
Like a Korean Guardians of the Galaxy. Mind blowing scifi special effects - if this film was in English with a Marvel production logo in the intro everyone would be scoring it 8.5 or 9.

I watched the English version which you don't even notice after 10 minutes. This movie was awesome. Awesome effects, awesome & very original concept, awesome screenplay... It's awesome.

If you like SciFi, this movie is a real treat. If you don't, you will still fall in love with the characters, story arc and spell binding special effects !

Highly recommend - 8/10

Crime Beat (2020– )

One of THE BEST true crime drama series to come along...
24 November 2020
I watch all the true crime I can get my hands on. "Crime Beat" is one of the best true crime series I have ever seen come out of North America. Period.

Very fast paced, re-enactments move the plot forward, every scene has a purpose, great narration and true commentary by real life detectives add that layer of authenticity without falling into "the boredom trap" of many other similar shows.

Every episode is gripping, suspenseful, terrifying...this series brings it all, in spades.

Highly (highly) recommend - cannot wait for season 2 (looks like it was just released!!!)

LONG time since a movie invoked unbridled, white knuckle terror.

26 September 2020
Having not seen the original - maybe that's the point. I find the show authentic, original, loaded with dark humor and tense.

Don't listen to the fanboys of the "original" - this is a great nail-biter of a show with loads of twists, turns, mystery, gratuitous violence and intrigue. Very very well executed

Well done - more more more

Really really bad...
5 September 2019
Cringe worthy jokes, the pimply teenager flipping burgers at your local burger joint could've written more mature dialogue. Simply put - folks, I would really avoid this movie.

Watching paint dry would be a better use of your time. Chasing cars in the street. Picking lint from your navel. Shame since there a couple good actors (Driver, Murray) who smeared their good name with this one. Will not consider watching any future films they are cast in, from now on. Cred = gone. 2 stars.
