Animal Farm (1999)
Good representation of good literature
The movie is well edited so the dialogue and movements seem more natural in most places. It has a few grim scenes but nothing too bad. I really like this movie a lot and the symbolism is conveyed nicely. Whether you're simply a little misanthropic or a history buff you'll probably like this movie quite a bit. The characters were very easy to relate to, at least in my opinion. The few songs in the movie are presented in a tasteful manner. This movie shouldn't be classified as a musical however. I think this movie would be great to show to kids in high school or maybe even middle school as it could be a good educational resource.
Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Magical World (1998)
Absolutely Terrible but maybe funny to laugh at
This movie was probably one of the worst I've ever seen. I kept watching out of sheer morbid curiosity. The plots were bad. The animation was bad. The songs were bad. There were some places that the animation was so bad that I literally laughed out loud. It's boring as snot otherwise. If you had any respect for any of the characters before it goes out the window completely with this movie. The beast is a GIANT violent control freak and Belle always blames herself for stuff that's not her fault. The only reason anyone would ever want to watch this more than once besides masochism would be if they wanted to remember their parents domestic abuse toward each other as some kind of dismal nostalgia.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Dark and satisfying
I'm normally not a fan of Johnny Depp. I hated his performance as Willy Wonka and as Jack Sparrow but this role was well played. I was hesitant to watch this movie at all but I'm glad I finally did. I had gotten recommendations of this film from people when I told them I liked Repo! The Genetic Opera because it's a similar genre mix. It's mostly a musical drama with elements of "horror". It's definitely not a blood and guts film meant to scare anyone unless you're unaware of how bad human society is. I feel there's a lot of honesty in this film philosophically. The only thing that's not perfect about this film is how the music doesn't match up with the vocals in some of the songs. It's kind of strange but if you can get past that you'll surely enjoy it.
Toy Story (1995)
It's okay but over hyped
I saw Toy Story in theaters when it first came out and it was alright but I wasn't impressed. Over the years I've come to dislike it rather than feeling neutral toward it. The concept of the movie wasn't new to me because I had already seen the Jim Henson film The Christmas Toy which was basically the same but instead of Woody the cowboy being the main character it was a tiger plush toy named Rigby and I prefer puppetry over CG anyway. Given that this movie was made in the early days of CG the people look really weird and fake, almost creepy, even the good characters. It seems to mainly focus on the petty squabbles between the jealous cowboy and the delusional spaceman. While the film has a few jokes the kids might not get, my over all impression is that the whole story lacks depth. You could maybe read between the lines and infer things but the movie glosses over most of the more serious stuff to keep the mood light. I didn't find any of the characters particularly likable either.
Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)
One of the Best Films I've Ever Seen
I loved this movie from start to finish. The beginning is set up very stylistically with a comic book type story board and it looks great. The songs are beautiful and catchy. There are twists in the plot but not in a super cheesy way. The makeup and costumes of the actors and actresses looked fantastic. I loved the way the songs were actually part of the dialogue of the movie and the plot rather than just randomly added filler the way a lot of musicals are. I mean, it's so obnoxious when a character just randomly sings a pointless song about their buttered toast at breakfast just to make the movie longer and that sort of thing is no where in Repo! The Genetic Opera. The movie also makes a nice commentary on the potential dystopia future of how corporations basically make the laws of the land.
Vuk (1981)
Great movie for kids
I remember watching this when I was a kid. The English version is called The Little Fox and the main character is called Vick instead of Vuk. My cousin and I always would argue over who got to have the VHS at their house because we had to share it. It's a great movie for kids, especially if they like animals. I don't recall any stupid or annoying songs in this movie so that's a major plus if you have kids. You won't be listening to something like "let it go" for 10 hours a day for the next year, which isn't even a bad song until it grates on your nerves for so long. It's also nice to have that classic animation style rather than everything being forcibly represented in CGI.
