My Son (2021)
Good movie riddles with major flaws
Contains spoilers
You cannot help wondering why this overall good movie went into release with some major flaws:
- no elaborations on why the office of the father was ransacked, and by whom
- no elaborations on why detective Roy was taken off the case
- comparing some pictures, and Hey, there it is, a suspicious Land Rover!
- highly incredible ending when the mother, father and detective Roy finding each other easier than finding a friend in a small coffee shop.
The overall suspense and acting is good though, and made the sit definitely worthwhile.
The Affair (2014)
Just some thoughts on Season 5
I just wanted to express my thoughts about the 5th season. Cause this really, really destroyed the other four. Cheap (Californian) clichés, absurd character developments, idiot story line -- everything that made The Affair so good in the beginning is completely gone in the finale. An anticlimax with very cheap and unlikely sex scenes in which Noah S. moves like a zombie between totally implausible figures.
Such a pity!
Allied (2016)
Great for Westland Lysander fans!
We didn't like this film too much, though it was entertaining most of the time and well-made in terms of costumes, colours and London WW2 "feeling". Brad Pitt was, as in many movies, distant and nowhere near great acting. It's Pitt in different clothes and with different names. His love for Cotillard - who fits her part well - is neither convincing nor deepened, and works strange all the time. When it gets towards showdown, this lack of explanation tears the movie apart. BUT: many thanks to the director for portraying a real WW2 hero, the Westland Lysander! Aircraft fans wouldn't want to miss this!
Attenberg (2010)
Dark, unpleasant movie about contemporary Greece
Dark, unpleasant movie about contemporary Greece, set by a dying father and a lost-soul daughter. Strange how you can fall in love with an actress you haven't seen before, as I did with Ariane Labed playing Marina. I guess she reminded me both physically and spiritually of an ex-girlfriend. Attractive, somehow boyish, always making the other move, both at a distance and now and then unexpectedly intimate. All the talking in other reviews about Marina being emotionally 'dead' is total nonsense. You have to (try to) understand this character, but not many men are willing or able to. To me she was the shining light in this portrayal of a depressed, bankrupt and humiliated country. This movie worked like a magnet to me. After I finished watching it, I was almost certain the director had to be a woman of about my age. I was right. I suppose Ariane has a great filming future ahead of her, but I hope she will perform in movies like this one. But it could just as well be her best role already.
The World According to Garp (1982)
A perfect movie indeed
"Garp" has always been extremely inspirational to me -- and still is today. I must have watched it about 20 times in 25 years, never got tired of it and would watch it tonight if I could. The characters, scenes, mishaps, joys, and dramas are very well picked out and very well balanced. Moreover, I think "Garp" is a sort of one-of-a-kind-movie, different than other movies in this genre -- but what genre is it actually? It's black, it's comedy, it's drama, but it's also absurd and somehow unreal, even a bit over-fictional. But it still 'works' and one can easily relate to all the things Garp and his friends/relatives are going through. It's vivid, fast, intimate, daring, and full of twists and turns and so well played. Is this a perfect movie? I couldn't tell why not!
