Band of Brothers (2001)
Incredible, thrilling and breathtaking story
This is one of the most phenomenal shows I have ever watched.
This depiction of WW2 truly made me happy, that men like that fought and served against tyranny and pure evil.
I was shocked by the horrific and brilliant portrayal of the frontlines.
The pure terror that was portrayed from every actor made me speechless.
Everything from the cinematography, cast, directing, writing, special effects and sound design has been perfectly curated for this impressive masterpiece.
Every fight looks incredible and is almost perfectly portrayed as what happened in real life. The creative liberties are very small and for some decisions don't really make sense, but other than that unless you actually look up every event, death and situation to see if it's real, you would not be disappointed at all.
This show makes war look equally exciting and horrible. As without courage and perseverance, victory would not be possible.
Without high morale and confidence, the men would have never been able to succeed. And yet fear also helped them conquer their foes. As fear was the true mark of experience and knowledge.
An absolute must watch and a very good re-watch for the future.
Sanyanggaedeul (2023)
The Yakuza live action that we deserve.
Incredibly entertaining and fun from start to finish. Not one dull episode in sight. Where there's no action, the drama and tension keep your attention.
The fight scenes contain some of the best choreography that I have personally seen since Daredevil.
The comedy is perfectly balanced with the drama. It's not too much like in the typical Hollywood mainstream productions. The story does have it's plot holes or weird writing decisions but it's very close to being perfect, as it executes all of it's setups extremely well.
If you like the Yakuza games, the tv show Tokyo Vice, movies like Oldboy or pretty much anything mafia/gangster related, you definitely need to check this hidden gem out.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Incredible start, horrible finish
First five episodes are incredible.
You get a mysterious setting with characters to which anyone can relate to, even if you are not a few million in debt.
After the first five episodes however, things begin to crumble.
You start getting fed information about the whole mystery which ruins the viewer's expectations as things like this are best left unknown.
The whole plot line of the side cop Cho Sang-Woo who is looking for his brother and is trying to bring the games down is absolutely pointless, he accomplished nothing, only to find out that his own brother is pulling the strings.
He dodges compromised guards, disgusting forced gay interactions and runs like a wild animal, outswimming a gps tracker underwater. One would think that they would at least see him passing them on the gps tracker.
The old man Il-Nam who's ganbu tries to trick him in order to live, comes back from the dead, only to reveal nothing. His whole buildup and emotion during that episode where he initially dies is absolutely destroyed by having him be a plot twist VIP at the end.
The rewatchability continues to crumble with each plot point.
The games go from actual logic and quick thinking to absolute chance and stupidity. An entire character, Kang Sae-byeok dies from a level getting self destroyed? Like why? Why do you kill off a character in such a meaningless way. Yes Sang-Woo finishes her off, but brings absolutely nothing to the show. She would have had 5 minutes tops from the incredible blood loss due to a huge glass shard ending her.
Yes the American VIPS are trash and the dialogue sucks, but they are not the worst part.
The last final epic game that kids play in teams is decided to be a 1v1 as it's the show's epic name. SQUID GAME.
The most boring ending game to have a 1v1 with. Would be a hundred times more entertaining if they added more people to it, as it's meant to be played.
And to top it all off after our main protagonist gets out of there he is so shocked that he is late to treat his mother and she dies, that he absolutely forgets about his daughter, his friend's mother who somehow did not get her shop taken, as it was mentioned that his friend bet his mother's shop and the young girl Kang's little brother.
It takes him a year to actually act and do something, because the old man reaches out to him and meets him one last time.
And instead of meeting his daughter to be a good father for once in his life, like he earlier mentions a few times, he decides to be the big strong man and take the games down which had him mentally broken for a year.
I understand that he did not want to spend the money, but at least take care of your friend's mom and a little boy. He could have even given a hand to Ali's family after he saved his life.
When you get such an incredible start and so much potential in the beginning, it's not easy to keep up the quality. The actors played absolutely fantastic ,but the writers just did not handle those episodes well enough which pretty much ruins the buildup of the previous episodes.
Batman Begins (2005)
The movie that defined itself with it's action of being incredible
The beginning of the best superhero franchise that exists. No matter how many special effects, CGI and money they try to put in a movie, it will never match the Dark knight trilogy.
Batman Begins sets the foundation of how Bruce Wayne, orphaned millionaire becomes the BATMAN.
The pacing and settings which Nolan chooses brilliantly displays the true colors of the most cruel and dark environment possible in a universe, Gotham city.
After years of overlooking crime, everything and everyone has become corrupt in it. The very epicenter of crime itself that leaves a young boy orphaned from a petty robbery.
The city itself creates Bruce and Bruce journeys the world in order to find a way to save his city and justice itself. He learns how the criminal mind works by becoming a criminal himself, in order to survive his journey.
Christian Bale takes the mantel of young Bruce Wayne and perfectly portrays the spoiled boy, that never truly returns.
Easily one of the best roles of Liam Neeson as Ducard who's true identity is hidden until the revelation of his hinted plan. Gary Oldman and Michael Cain are the perfect new parents for young Bruce, giving him comfort and guidance.
All of the practical effects in this movie have Nolan written all over them. Genuine real explosions and sets demolished and brought to reality.
If we did have Batman in real life, this movie is a perfect representation of what he would look like. We all know the story and we've seen it retold a dozen times, however this origin version somehow seems to be the first thing that comes to mind, when you think about how his story began.
The Godfather (1972)
One of the greats
The Godfather is an incredible experience.
I can surely understand why critics put this movie at the top.
All of the performances done by the cast are incredible, they truly bring this movie to life. It's clear that the director and writer did their jobs brilliantly.
At the very start of the movie Marlon Brando gives out a powerful and emotional performance, making you wish that he was your Godfather.
Al Pacino is passed the torch at the middle of the movie, gaining more and more screen time, slowly becoming the star of the show.
This movie is an absolute pop culture hit. It has been referenced and continues to be referenced non stop throughout different types of media (movies, cartoons,tv series, etc...).
At it's time and for the next 30 years after it was released, it was probably THE best movie ever created.
It's certainly a classic and with a unbiased review I could easily give it a 10/10 if I was 20 years older and I grew up with this film.
If you live in the 21st century and for some reason you had not watched The Godfather like me, you will certainly have already seen most of the famous scenes and lines from the movie in one way or another.
Sadly watching this 50 years later has kind of ruined the delivery of those scenes for me.
In addition to that, this is a trilogy story, so the end does not really give it a satisfying conclusion. It does however give an amazing setup that makes you want more. My biased review is a harsh 8/10.
Summary: this movie is a must watch if you enjoy incredible quality cinema and very rich stories.
The War with Grandpa (2020)
Christopher Walken was the only good part
This is a movie specifically made for young teens. It does not in any way entertain older audiences.
It should be a Nickelodeon or Disney special as it is also made from Tim Hill who directed Spongebob (which was way better) and Alvin and the Chipmunks which has not aged that well, but it still more entertaining than a home alone wannabe knock off.
The punchlines of the jokes are so bland that if you're not under 10 years old I do not see you laughing at it. EXCEPT for the legend Christopher Walken, let's face it, he gave more of a performance for this movie than the whole cast combined, even De Niro's brilliant acting could not match the aura and charisma that this man carries to the screen, any moment with Walken feels like he's giving his all to make people laugh, just listening to the way the guy delivers his lines and talks is entertaining. Sadly the screen time of Walken is very small. It would have been smarter to give the older actors more screen time and make it their movie, that would have definitely been more entertaining. Telling the story from two sides does not always work well. Especially when one side is a 12 year old child going through his Emo phase and on other you have a broken man who is silently asking for help.
Sometimes giving one perspective is just more enjoyable.
An easy 4/10 for Christopher and De Niro, who literally broke their old backs from carrying this movie.
