Michael Jordan, the greatest competitor of all time
3 August 2023
I was late to the dance as I just completed watching The Last Dance on Netflix. This incredible documentary details a behind the scenes look at the Chicago Bulls final championship season run while at the same time effectively switching back and forth to past Bulls/Michael Jordan history including his tight knit relationship with his father, how he got drafted by the Bulls, the early Bulls "slug" teams he was on, how the championship team was slowly built around him, how the Bulls were bullied by the Detroit Pistons and eventually overtook them as well as their 5 championship seasons leading up to the Last Dance.

I was born and raised in Chicago. I do believe Chicago & New York have the greatest fans with Boston & Philadelphia not far behind. Before Michael Jordan was drafted by the Bulls, Chicago was a desperate sports city filled with incompetent front office executives and players on all of their major professional sports teams. What Michael Jordan did for the City of Chicago and the NBA here in the USA as well as worldwide is unprecedented. This documentary takes an in depth behind the scenes look at the greatest competitor professional sports has ever known. How anyone could compare any other NBA player to him is not even a conversation piece. His will to win was on another planet, far, far away from his teammates as well as the other great players in the league. To watch his will to win in this documentary is utterly jaw dropping.

The documentary also vilifies Bulls GM Jerry Krause and justifiably so. I've seen many people sticking up for Krause but I can tell you first hand as a human being he was a louse. As a GM he was highly overrated because when you have a centerpiece like Michael Jordan, Jordan makes every move and every teammate look good, sometimes great. I give Krause credit for bringing on Phil Jackson & trading for Scottie Pippen and that's about it. Bringing on Dennis Rodman was the idea of Bulls scout Jim Stack. Let's not forget Krause actually wanted to trade Jordan and came to Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf with the trade proposal which was shot down. He also told Phil Jackson before the start of the final championship season that he could go 82-0 and he still wouldn't be back. His post Jordan rebuild teams struggled to win 20 games in a season for three straight seasons. Just these 3 examples alone are not indicative of a great, let alone good GM. A story that was not relayed in the documentary regarding his poor character as a human being was right after the Bulls won their first championship in Los Angeles, they were celebrating in their locker room. Former Bulls player Bob Love knocked on the door to congratulate the team. Krause answered and told him this was a private celebration and abruptly shut the door in his face. This story, unlike Theo Epstein, who, when he was President of the Chicago Cubs and they won the World Series in 2016, welcomed any & all former Cubs players to join in on their celebration.

I believe Michael Jordan to be the most extraordinary competitor in sports history, certainly in the NBA, no question. This is a thoroughly entertaining & enjoyable documentary that I wanted to savor so instead of binge watching all at once I watched one episode a night for 10 days and I'm glad I did.

Thank you to the producers and directors and everyone involved in making this outstanding documentary. Thank you Michael Jordan for rescuing the Bulls and my hometown of Chicago. Jordan put Chicago on the map, nationally as well as worldwide and no matter how depleted our sports teams might be, we'll always have one of the greatest dynasties in professional sports history anytime we wish to romance the past.

Lastly, thank you to the Houston Rockets for drafting Hakeem Olajuwon and especially the Portland Trailblazers for drafting Sam Bowie which will go down as the single worst draft decision in the history of sports, past, present, all the way through the end of time.

The Enforcer (1976)
8/10
"and that's a helluva price to pay for being stylish."
4 July 2023
As a fan of Dirty Harry Callahan growing up, I found myself compelled to write a review for the underrated, "The Enforcer."

"The Enforcer" provides good action, subtle humor, classic Dirty Harry one liners and coolness. It also has a good plot, domestic terrorists threatening San Francisco. Harry's partner in the film is a female this time, Kate Moore, portrayed by Tyne Daley. Daley does a good job of displaying rookie tendencies while trying to keep up with Harry but at the same time learning from Harry and gaining confidence as well as courage. Bradford Dillman excels in his role as the unlikeable Captain McKay. DeVeren Bookwalter portrays the terrorist psychotic leader, Bobby Maxwell.

There is no doubt for me this was the last good Dirty Harry film but I was compelled to write the review because I see this film as the second best in the Dirty Harry franchise. Although the second film, "Magnum Force," also provides a good plot, rogue vigilante rookie cops, the big difference for me is the ending. I personally was disappointed how "Magnum Force" ended. The showdown seemed a bit contrived and at times, too dark in the factory where much of the showdown took place. The ending of "The Enforcer" in my opinion is much better than its predecessor. It has action, shock & a classic Harry ending.

"Dirty Harry" will always be number one in the franchise on my list, followed by "The Enforcer" then "Magnum Force" which was a good film throughout but just fell short in the end for me. "Sudden Impact" & "The Dead Pool" fall far behind the first 3 as overall good films with "Sudden Impact" being known more for one of Harry's most famous lines, "Go ahead, make my day." I give "The Enforcer" a solid 8.5 out of 10. If you're a Dirty Harry franchise fan, you won't be disappointed.

I could NEVER forgive
14 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Love and emotions are just two of the many traits that GOD gave us. Yet GOD EXPECTS us to forgive an inhuman monster who abducts, tortures, rapes and kills our children? Maybe some can actually forgive. For me, as a father, NEVER! The only way I'd feel any type of relief is if the monster died, most preferably a horrific death.

We are made in GOD'S image yet HE is the one who gave us all these human emotions? I believe in GOD but over the years have come to have a big problem with all religions.

What GOD pushed this man to do at the end of this movie is absolutely insane. I'd NEVER forgive my child's killer but in turn would rather hunt down the monster myself because vengeance is also an emotion he included in us.

3 from Hell (2019)

Rob Zombie hits rock bottom
15 October 2022
All the scenes were artificial and thrown together with no continuity. Acting was subpar at best all the way around. Dialogue and scenes were contrived & incredulous.

Rob Zombie tried hard to replicate almost every sequence of scenes from his lone masterpiece, the Devil's Rejects, in this film but failed miserably on every level, including the soundtracks in the scenes which was perfected masterfully in the Devil's Rejects. You usually only catch lightning in a bottle once. It was literally unbearable to watch. The character of Warden Virgil Harper, played by Jeff Daniel Phillips, was especially painful to watch. The only reason I finished watching was to complete viewing the entire trilogy and I only hope the trilogy ends here.

The 3 from hell is a movie from hell. Quite frankly it's one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It does not deserve the 1 star rating. This is a ZERO! Maybe the worst thing about the movie is its painstakingly 1:55 minutes too long.

Lost (2004–2010)

Drama & Suspense reign on Lost
15 October 2022
Being a workaholic in the years that "Lost" aired I never got a chance to watch it until recently when I binge watched it over a 3 week period on Amazon Prime. I've always heard good things about the show with mixed reviews about the last couple of seasons.

First & foremost for me I would describe Lost as a fantasy/drama. It's unique in that it represents people globally from the U. S. to Australia and many points in between. These people are stranded (ala Gilligan's Island) on an island. We see many of them deal with trust issues, betrayal and enemies, both friend & foe, with weekly plot twists and tension building episodes keeping you in suspense week to week. There always seems to be a life or death, pulse pounding, perilous edge of your seat situation unfolding throughout the episodes/seasons. The show was also very graphic when it came to displaying medical scenes.

Lost has many elements of other movies and shows I've watched throughout my lifetime.

At times it would remind me of "Planet of the Apes," "Poseidon adventure," "Capricorn one," "Mysterious island" and "The Walking Dead" just to name a few. With the main common theme of all those productions being people thrown into a perilous situation resulting in an emotional roller coaster of life or death decisions.

Season 5 goes in an entirely new direction and goes against many of the things established in the first 4 seasons. The last 2 seasons were definitely different, i wouldn't call them bad. I believe they could've ended the show after the 4th season and either spinned off the last 2 seasons or made it a continuation of the series with a different title. I was actually not very interested in what was going on on the island itself in the last 2 seasons but rather more interested in the state side stories whether they were flashback, flash forwards or parallel universe stories.

Regardless, Lost is the ultimate fantasy story of survival to come to TV in a long time and this coming before The Walking Dead. It also includes a fascinating love story, one of my favorite prime time TV love stories (the story of Desmond & Penny). A definite "true love" love story, even more so for me than Sun & Jin.

I've read where many people at one time or another were confused while watching the show as to what exactly was going on. I believe captions at the bottom of the screen would've been tremendously helpful explaining exactly what was talking place-flashback/flashforward/parallel universe or purgatory as well as the ever so important year the event was taking place. The last thing you want is a viewer watching the show, trying to enjoy it but at the same time trying to figure out what exactly is going on. As producers of the show, this is the last thing you would want your viewers to go through.

Overall I think "Lost" is a good entertaining show with many characters to choose from to either love or hate alike.

Typical action film from the Schwarzenegger factory
2 August 2022
Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't specialize in making academy award winning productions but rather action films based on fantasy where one should not expect much credibility but rather just sit back and be entertained.

Schwarzenegger plays a fireman who has his life shattered in a split second when he loses his wife & son to an act of terrorism. From there we have a lot of the typical Schwarzenegger scenarios-he chases the bad guys, the bad guys chase him, he beats up on the bad guys, the bad guys beat up on him, he runs and grunts and yells while he's doing it. That's what we love about Arnold Schwarzenegger.

One of Schwarzenegger's best? No. One of his worst? Definitely not. Once again, if you look for credibility throughout the film, you won't find it. There's very little credibility in Schwarzenegger & Stallone films which is why you just sit back and enjoy the characters we love to see them play as we get entertained in the process. Which is once again why I refer to these films as action/fantasy.

John Leguizamo plays the usual sleaze ball, John Turturro plays the usual awkward guy, Cliff Curtis was just not menacing enough for me as the main antagonist (and he didn't cut the mustard in Fear the walking dead as far as I'm concerned), Francesca Neri was convincing in her role. I think everyone pretty much knows how these films end, it's just a matter of how we get there. I will say there is a late plot twist.

Enjoy the ride. I watch Arnold Schwarzenegger films for the colorful characters he plays, for his charisma, wit, charm and most of all his toughness. That's what he delivers in Collateral Damage.

Brian's Song (1971 TV Movie)
9/10
The Hollywood version of Brian & Gale's friendship
12 June 2022
As a lifelong Chicagoan and a die hard Chicago Bears fan, Brian's song was one of my favorite movies growing up and my favorite sports movie. The movies tells the story of the friendship between Bears teammates Brian Piccolo & Gale Sayers. However, Hollywood embellished the actual friendship between the two men.

As an avid fan of the movie, I did some research and was actually taken aback at what I found. Not to get into every minute detail and certainly not wanting to burst anyone's bubble who wants to believe the movie for its face value but what I found out was the 2 men were good friends but not best friends. Many of the scenes and depictions in the story were sensationalized for the obvious dramatic effect relating to the movie's theme. As a matter of fact a good majority of the scenes in the movie never really happened and the ones that were true were slightly altered to fit the theme of the movie. I came to find out that Brian's best friend in real life was ironically his other Bears teammate and fellow running back, Ralph Kurek. His second best friend was more likely Ed McCaskey. As for Sayers rehabilitating his knee, he mostly credits a fellow by the name of Tommy Dare. He and Dare worked out at Chicago's Lawson Y where they adhered to a "brutal regime." Not to get into any spoilers for the ending but Sayers wasn't there in the hospital as depicted as he was actually in the hospital himself recovering from a bout of pneumonia. Sayers was in a hospital in Chicago while Piccolo was at Sloan Kettering in New York. These were just a few of the many differences in the movie as opposed to what really happened.

When I found out the true story of Brian and Gale's friendship I must admit it took a lot out of the movie for me. Especially when I watch it now as I see it a little differently than most would.

This is still a great movie and I still recommend it to people of all ages and interests. I think just about everyone who watches would like the movie. This movie is often talked about when mentioning trying to close the gap between white & black race relations. However for me, a movie that I believe shows an even better portrait of a black man and white man finding a common bond is the original "Defiant ones" from 1958 starring Sidney Poitier & Tony Curtis.

The War at Home: I Wash My Hands of You (2006)

The Gold women get busted
22 May 2022
When Hillary is busted for lying about completing a research paper, Dave scolds her. Unfazed, Hillary continues to lie by having a boy named Henry Pham pick her up as her date but once they leave the house she's getting picked up by her real date, a 33 year old man who is also lying claiming to be 25.

More lies await Dave as he keeps catching Vicky smoking even though she keeps saying she'll quit, breaking her promises to Dave.

Dave & Vicky later find out that Henry overdoses and is in the hospital but is alright. When Hillary comes home she is busted once again but this time Dave has had enough and announces he doesn't care anymore and that Hillary can do whatever she wants. At first, Hillary is elated with her freedom but soon realizes she actually likes to be cared for. As for Dave, he too realizes that as a parent, it's his unconditional job as a father to care.

Favorite line of the episode.

Dave to Hillary's "presumed" date, Henry Pham, as he's walking out their front door with Hillary: "Hey, MIT come here, listen. If you're really smart, you'll make sure to keep your crouching tiger away from our hidden dragon."

The War at Home: Car Wars (2006)

21 May 2022
Hillary wants a car and Dave is against it. Vicky thinks maybe Dave should reconsider but when Dave mentions it to his friend Joe at work, Joe gives Dave the idea of writing up a car contract with Hillary. Dave & Vicky draw up a contract with many stipulations that Hillary must follow to the tee or else they take back the car. Dave & Vicky wind up getting a little too carried away and start taking advantage of the contract's stipulations.

Meanwhile Mike's ex girlfriend Heidi shows an interest in Larry. Larry asks Dave what to do but Dave is dead set against it. When Larry pleads, Dave advises him it's only ok if Mike doesn't have a problem with it. Mike gives Larry the green light. Is Heidi really into Larry or is she trying to make Mike jealous?

Although Dave & Vicky always try to be the best parents they can possibly be, they're still out of Ward & June Cleaver's league. Dave can ultimately try & help solve his kid's problems but usually in a roundabout way.

My favorite line from the episode.

Dave addressing Hillary who wants a car: "Hillary, Hillary, your grades stink, you break curfew all the time and you don't help out at all around here. I'm gonna give you keys to a car? No! You're lucky I don't run you over with a car."

The War at Home: Super Dave (2006)
Season 2, Episode 3

Dave, the reluctant super hero
21 May 2022
Dave reluctantly volunteers to drive Larry & Kenny to a comic book convention in Philadelphia, especially since Dave really wanted to watch the Jets game that day.

Meanwhile back at home, Mike is introduced to caffeine by Vicky to help him stay up so he can read the book Moby Dick for school. Vicky must also contend with Hillary, who wants to sleep over at a boys house.

At the end of the day, although Dave has no interest in Larry's passion for the comic book world, he tries to make his son happy by taking him & his friend to the convention. Dave's lack of enthusiasm is a bit of a downer for Larry but Dave tries to make up for it in the end when he meets Larry's hero in the restroom, "Zoltar" and tries to get his autograph for Larry. When Zoltar rudely refuses, all havoc breaks loose between Dave & Zoltar and it spills out onto the convention floor. Whose side will Larry defend?

My favorite line from the episode: Dave: Here's an idea why don't we go to a restaurant.

Larry: But this (convention) is where all the fun is Kenny: We can go to a restaurant anytime, how often do you get to have aliens serve you your lunch Dave: Apparently you've never had a burrito at the Quickie mart.

The War at Home: Dream Crusher (2006)
Season 2, Episode 2

Dave The dream crusher
21 May 2022
A couple of the Gold kids have aspirations. Hillary wants to be a professional singer but unfortunately doesn't have a singing voice to accommodate her. Larry runs for President of his chess club, unopposed with Kenny as his campaign manager.

Leave it to Dave who never holds back. Him & Vicky can take Hillary singing in the house for only so long. Dave persuades Kenny to run against Larry because he doesn't want Larry to get more chastised for his even higher geek status if he wins.

Meanwhile Vicky finds an empty condom wrapper in Mike's pants pocket while doing laundry so she and Dave go to Mike to find out exactly what's going on. Is Mike having sex?

He may not always have the best presentation when going about doing things (ala Shane from The Walking Dead) but at the end of the day Dave does what he thinks best for his kids and ultimately tries to look out for them, whether he's right or wrong.

My favorite line from the episode: Dave (speaking from the fourth wall in the episodes opening sequence): "I still have hopes & dreams for my own kids. Mainly that they'll sneak across the border into Mexico and leave me the hell alone."

The War at Home: Back to School (2006)
Season 2, Episode 1

Can Dave catch a break in the season 2 opener?
21 May 2022
Dave is looking forward to the kids going back to school so he plans some afternoon "fun" with Vicky on their first day back. Unfortunately for Dave & Vicky, Hillary has other plans for her first day back at school.

Meanwhile Mike's plans to break up with his girlfriend Heidi worries Dave because Dave fears he'll lose Heidi's father Jeff as a friend. Dave decides to stick his two cents in the matter but a back and forth situation ensues.

Larry reinvents himself with a new name of "Gideon."

All in all another solid episode. Poor Dave can't seem to catch a break but as usual his banter is second to none. Of the 3 kids, Mike seems to have grown the most since season 1, not necessarily height wise but you can tell his boyish face has matured. A cameo by Jerry "The Beaver" Mathers as he plays the principal of a young Dave.

My favorite line of the episode: Dave to Hillary-"what are you doing out of your room? You know what, that's it, I'm taking away your blackberry, your blueberry, the whole fruit bowl."

The War at Home (2005–2007)

A great show that would have no chance today
11 May 2022
The war at home was a great tv sitcom that actually dealt with everyday problems in a family household. For me the show is similar in some aspects to Married with children but on a much more credible playing field. Married with children was way too over the top comedy whereas The war at home keeps it very real.

It's about Dave Gold, a middle class working insurance salesman and his wife Vicky, living in middle class America while raising 3 teenagers, Hillary, Larry & Mike, and dealing with the everyday issues & problems of raising 3 teens as well as the day to day adversities every married couple faces. The plots in the show are very relatable as well as how they play out, all in a very credible fashion.

The writing on the show is top notch and very quick witted, especially when it comes to Dave Gold. Michael Rapaport plays Dave Gold. As he is a native New Yorker, he actually reminded me of Bowery Boys actor Huntz Hall very much. Many of their mannerisms, facial expressions & hand gestures are very similar and watching Huntz Hall and the Bowery Boys growing up, the character of Dave Gold reminds me of what Satch, the character in the Bowery Boys played by Huntz Hall, would be like if he grew up and got married and became a father & husband.

Unfortunately this show wouldn't have a leg to stand on in the ultra sensitive world we live in today of WOKE, BLM, LGBTQ, ME Too movement, etc. Just as All in the family couldn't survive today either. The world has become too sensitive today and have set parameters so a show like The war at home wouldn't even be given consideration.

With that said I still think the show was a great, well written comedy and great acting as well.

Rob Zombie catches Lightning in a bottle
11 March 2022
In only his second big screen director's effort, Rob Zombie delivers a masterpiece. He also was the brilliant "Shakespeare" who wrote this film that delivered countless subtle lines that were sometimes hilarious and sometimes so gritty that a big Hollywood production these days just don't the have the gumption or innovation to deliver so many memorable lines. Aside from being gritty, this 1970's throwback film has heart and delivers in every way. Zombie was also a producer of the film. Although this film is the sequel to Zombie's first effort, House of 1000 corpses, there is almost no correlation between that film and this one other than the fact that some of the antagonists in that film are in this one but the biggest link to the original and this film is the revenge factor theme.

For starters The Devil's Rejects has great characters. First there's the Devil's Rejects themselves-Otis, Baby, Captain Spaulding and Mama (don't forget Tiny either). Each one a unique personality full of pure evil and unconscious thoughts & actions with no regard for human life. They literally are Devils themselves, as Otis actually refers to himself once during the film. The film might have one of my favorite protagonists in movie history (and I've seen a plethora of James Bond, Rocky, Rambo & Schwarzenegger movies so that's saying something), Sheriff John Quincey Wydell played by William Forsythe. Wydell is absolutely brilliant as the cool lawman who disregards all the laws & rules as he goes after the Devil's Rejects in an effort to not just apprehend them but administer his own brand of Frontier Justice by eliminating all of them to ensure they'll not only never have the chance of killing anyone again but to also avenge the death of his brother, also a lawman, in House of 1000 Corpses. There's the "Unholy 2" played brilliantly by Danny Trejo & Diamond Dallas Page, who play a couple of roughnecks hired by Wydell to help him round up the Devil's Rejects. Zombie brings back some 70's & 80's icons in the film like Geoffrey Lewis, a Clint Eastwood sidekick in many of Eastwoods 70's & 80's films, Priscilla Barnes who played Terri on the popular 3's Company, Ken Foree who played the main protagonist Peter in the Original Dawn of the Dead, PJ Soles who was one of the first of many victims of Michael Myers from the original Halloween, Deborah Van Valkenburgh who played Mercy in The Warriors and Jackie in the sitcom Too close for comfort as well as iconic porn star Ginger Lynn who does what she does best.

Zombie's writing is off the charts as once again he mixes in humor with bad ass and there are many subtle lines in the film that are just downright ingenious! The film actually has not one but two endings. The first one is more of a shocker and the second more of a surprise.

I wasn't thrilled with Zombie's first effort, House of 1000 corpses. He took a little too much from the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre in that one. His movies after The Devil's Rejects miss the mark for me too. Not all bad but nothing close to this one, hence my title why Zombie caught lightning in a bottle with this film.

The plot of this film, revenge, has certainly been used a thousand times before and a thousand more to come but Zombie stamps his own unique brand on this one with his tenacious spirit for this film to be different and indeed it is.

Although Zombie injected the life of brilliant unforgettable characters to the evil antagonists in the film, that doesn't mean we like or root for them because they're still pure evil with nothing but a sinister agenda which makes why rooting for Wydell is so special in this film.

The Devil's Reject's is indeed violent at times. There is really not a whole lot of gore in the film, which draws a parallel to the Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If you thought that movie was gory, watch it again. It played more on our imagination than anything. Because there is plenty of violence in the film it's definitely a time to put the kids to sleep before watching,

Rob Zombie delivers brilliant characters and a uniquely written film sure to have you thoroughly enjoying his lone masterpiece from beginning to end. He also mixes in some great soundtracks throughout the film with some being played to some of the action scenes.

Hang on to your hats and enjoy the ride as you root like Hell for John Quincey Wydell as he attempts to roundup & eliminate The Devil's Rejects.

Agent Cooper delivers TRUE justice
3 February 2022
The one thing I always disliked about the Allison Dubois character was her delusional thinking that every killer, even if proven beyond a doubt guilty, needs a fair shake like anyone else. There are countless thousands of victims who have been raped & lost their lives to repeat offenders. Repeat offenders are a product of the Allison Dubious (backwards) way of thinking. This thinking should apply to petty crimes done by petty criminals and not rapists & murderers.

In this episode, agent Cooper adheres to the "Dexter" method of thinking to assure no other potential innocent victims lie in the wake of another released violet, sinister perpetrator.

The victims of repeat offenders have blood on the hands of our INJUSTICE SYSTEM as well as people who think like Allison Dubois.

A great episode with a nice twist in the end.

A different take on the vampire genre that worked for me
30 October 2021
Modern day vampires who feast on animal blood & not human. Traditional bad vampires who do feast on human blood. A tale of forbidden love. This movie has a little bit of everything as it follows the story of high schooler Bella Swan as she packs up from her sunny Arizona lifestyle living with her mother to go to gloomy, cloudy & rainy Forks Washington to live with her dad. Once there Bella must adjust to life in a small town, not knowing many teens her age other than Jacob Black, a childhood friend.

The film has a good pace as we see Bella make friends, fit in and also fall in love. She eventually uncovers the mystery of the Cullen family but it does nothing to phase her.

There are some good action sequences, suspense & the 3 villain vampires do an excellent job of the antagonists in the film. I also really enjoyed the Baseball scene.

Overall I enjoyed the film as we see a new spin in the genre of vampire movies and for me it worked. The ending was suspenseful but incomplete as it's only the first movie in a series that picks up where the previous film left off.

Maybe I'm sentimental because I took my daughter to watch these films during her coming of age years so this movie along with some others has a special place in my heart. Even though, I still think the film was very entertaining, well acted and I enjoyed the groundbreaking concept of how the Cullen family live. I also enjoyed the scenery in the movie.

Thumbs up for Twilight.

Larry David never fails to impress with fresh new scripts
26 October 2021
If you're a fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm, you won't be disappointed. Larry finds himself in the usual socially awkward situations and a great supporting cast as usual, Jeff, Susie, Leon & Albert Brooks. Jon Hamm returns for an appearance and Larry's dating life never fails to be interesting, this time with "Kill Bills" Lucy Liu.

A thoroughly entertainment episode.

A real inside look into the world of degenerate prop bet gambling
5 August 2021
I can't really say I grew up a big gambler. Nothing hard core and certainly nothing that interfered with my financial status. However I do know 2 guys who are straight out of this movie, 2 gambling degenerates that would bet on ANY AND EVERYTHING. One is my brother the other a friend. Today, they're both flat broke.

7 days to Vegas is a refreshing movie considering all the misses that Hollywood tries to feed us these days. It gives us an inside look at degenerate prop bet gambling at it's best & worst and once again I can vouch that the movie portrays the real deal.

Some guys will do ANYTHING to win a bet to try and stay one step ahead of their opponent but if their opponent is as sneaky as they are, a back and forth struggle ensues. That's exactly the case in this movie. The comedy mixes in well to make this a fun movie and very enjoyable to watch. I will admit the ending was predictable for me (maybe it's because I hung around characters like this my entire life) but nonetheless it was still very good.

Vince Van Patten stepped out of his WPT commentating job to hit one out of the park with this one. As Vince's late great WPT partner Mike Sexton would say, "nice going Vince."

Seinfeld: The Finale (1998)
Season 9, Episode 22
10/10
Larry David nailed it
21 June 2021
What did people really expect for a series finale on a 30 minute sitcom about nothing? This 2 part finale was brilliant but reception was mainly negative and it even has the stars of Seinfeld & Larry David brainwashed that it was bad. What else could you possibly do for a 30 minute sitcom finale? Bring back all the people on the show throughout the years who the main cast butted heads with. Absolutely brilliant! Keeping in mind this was not a 1 hour drama where suspense and tension drew to some unexpected twist at the conclusion. Did people really want another 30 minute episode of the usual? Because other than coming up with what Larry David did that's pretty much what you would've gotten. Because the series was ending I believe the bar was set so high with expectations it was doomed to fail in the eyes of the majority no matter what other finale would have been presented to them.

Now I will be honest, as a Seinfeld fan, I was unable to watch the series finale when it aired due to travel and because we didn't have the convenience back then as we do today to watch anything on demand, I actually finally got to see the finale 4 years after it aired and I was very pleasantly surprised as well as impressed by the innovation of the script. I can't say for sure if the delay impacted my decision (I don't think it did) all I know is that Larry David nailed it and I only wish they would've aired the full 75 minutes as I still have yet to see the deleted scenes. The cast, crew & especially Larry David should all be very proud of this finale instead of what they currently think of it-brainwashed by the public after reception drew criticism thinking this 2 part masterpiece was a failure.

Nobody's Fool (1994)

Newman stands out
30 May 2021
Paul Newman delivers an absolutely method acting performance in the story of a man who wasn't much of a father to his son and paid most of his attention to doing his own thing. His character, Sully, realizes that it's not too late to try and do the right thing by his son & grandson's.

Jessica Tandy gives her usual outstanding performance as well in her last role before she passed away.

This was a good story with all around good performances. Melanie Griffith's played Bruce Willis's beautiful buxom blonde wife who, if you're paying attention, exposes her breasts to Paul Newman for about 2 seconds.

An excellent movie that I'm sure a lot of people can identify with, especially dads that weren't around as much as they would've liked to or just weren't in their children's lives as much as they should've been.

The Walking Dead: Clear (2013)
Season 3, Episode 12

Rick forgets how lucky he was
1 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Rick is not in my top ten of favorite Walking Dead characters. He is in my top ten of least liked Walking Dead characters. Since the beginning he's continued to make bad decisions. But in this episode is where I totally disconnected with the character Rick.

This episode itself I personally found to be overrated and a bit ho hum. What I did find interesting is that while on their way to Rick's hometown to find guns & ammo, Rick, Michonne & Carl pass a lone, helpless hitchhiker. The hitchhiker pleads for help as they pass him in the car. They get stuck in some mud and the hitchhiker catches up again pleading for help. Rick doesn't even acknowledge him. Ironic that Rick winds up reuniting with Morgan in this episode. If it weren't for Morgan, Rick would be dead. Rick was helpless, just like the hitchhiker, when he walked out of the hospital and into a world full of zombies. Yet Rick didn't even consider helping this hitchhiker even though at one time he was in the same dire straits. At the end of the episode, while driving back they see the hitchhiker's body on the side of the road devoured by zombies.

There was certainly room for one more in the car not to mention they were preparing for war with the Governor so Rick could've definitely used more man power.

Imagine living in a zombie apocalypse and doing that to your fellow man or woman. To me, this spoke volumes about Rick's character.

Serial Mom (1994)
10/10
June Cleaver's dark side
26 February 2021
Serial Mom is a dark comedy starring Kathleen Turner as a "June Cleaver" type (mother from TV's "Leave it to Beaver") who develops a passion for mean streaks & murder (all outside the home).

While I don't want to say this is over the top comedy ala "Naked Gun" film series, it is. It borderlines fantasy, stuff we'd maybe think of and would like to see but usually don't and the film delivers 90 minutes of pure entertainment. Obviously most of the scenes are incredulous but the director really plays it up to an enjoyable pace and escape out of reality.

Kathleen Turner nails the role and I heard she wasn't first or even second chosen to star in the film but she was the only actress with no demands. I loved her interactions with Dottie Hinkle, absolutely vulgar hilarity. The kills were nicely done and although you didn't want to get on Beverly Sutphin's (Kathleen Turner) bad side, you weren't guaranteed death if you did. Sam Waterston as the husband/father, Matthew Lillard as the son and Riki Lake as the daughter were all terrific in their supporting roles as well as supporting their mother.

I've heard some criticism of the court/trial scenes at the movie's conclusion but the banter was hilarious especially how each eyewitness self destructed with a little help from Beverly. Suzanne Somer's role was a nice addition as well as she played herself and looked damn good doing so.

This is what a dark comedy is supposed to be-an outlandish farce that goes to the next level of no holds barred comedy and language that's just a wild departure into fantasyland.

If you're bored and want to be entertained for 90 minutes, I recommend Serial Mom.

Who wouldn't want to see June Cleaver chasing Eddie Haskell down the street with a knife!

Monk: Mr. Monk and the Three Julies (2008)
Season 6, Episode 13
10/10
Clever & hilarious
29 January 2021
Somebody is killing off all the Julie Teeger's in town. Is Natalie's daughter next? Can Monk find the killer before the killer possibly strikes again?

Disher goes undercover in drag in this one. Will he fowl it up? Can he remember his code?

In her haste to protect her daughter, Natalie takes the Captains car several times to arrive at a new crime scene, damaging the car a little more each time.

Suspenseful & hilarious. That's what this show does best. One of my favorite Monk episodes.

Hostel: Part III (2011 Video)
6/10
Good until the last 10 minutes
27 January 2021
Hostel 1 was Original and held my interest. Hostel 2 tried the same formula as 1 but the ending was incredulous and insulted my intelligence. At the end of the day if we wanted to nit pick all movies are to some degree incredulous but all I ask is to try and keep it as credible as you can. I actually liked the plot and acting in this movie. I enjoyed the the look on the other side from the perspective of the elite hunting members. A new way to kill with bets Vegas style.

Unfortunately the ending just lost me. Two guys that were supposed to be dead come back. All I ask is that the producers leave a "door opening" on whether or not these characters are actually dead when they're "presumed" killed. But the 2 characters I'm referring to were dead.

This movie was on its way to a rating of 8-8.5 but dropped to a 6 due to a poor finish. They almost nailed it but dropped the ball for me.

Marty (1955)
10/10
A film back when people had a moral compass
5 January 2021
Marty is a timeless classic but probably only for us "dinosaurs,". I don't think the latest generation can comprehend a movie like this, that people were actually polite, formal and cordial back in the day and had morals and ethics.

Marty is a wonderful film about a lonely, overweight, not the best looking guy with low self esteem, who is a butcher and lives with his mother. All his other siblings are married and have a family of their own. One night while out with a buddy, Marty just might've found his perfect match, his needle in a haystack. A woman who also is looked down upon because she is perceived as ugly by others, she is also a homebody that lives with her parents and although she's a school teacher she's on the fast track of becoming an old maid. Can these 2 people find true love?

This was an era I wish I grew up in. I'm 52 years old and hang on to the last bit of morals that exist today. Back then if you met a girl you liked, you dated her, maybe kissed her while dating and eventually got married. Today people can meet at a nightclub and they might be found minutes later in a stall of a bathroom having sex!

Marty is a part of the golden era of TV & movies. Movies like this are all but extinct from being made anymore. The times have changed but unfortunately not for the better. As time has progressed forward we have digressed as a society. Marty lets an old dinosaur like me cling onto and remember that there was a time when society was good and people knew their boundaries because they were brought up the right way and had pride.
