For all who despair at the ending, what else would one expect from Will Trent? His decision, painful as it was, was the only one his character could make. He is as ironclad in his integrity as he is buttoned up in his wardrobe. Will is one of my favorite detectives ever. To have him act in any other manner would belie his very nature. If this is the season finale for #2, I can hardly wait for season 3!
BTW: why do we always assume that the law can be bypassed for our own families? This episode should have viewers looking at the choices and wondering what they would do in the same situation. It's a painful twist to be sure, but no real surprise if you follow the characters.
