What a Girl Wants (2003)
Killed off my brain cells
Calling this a proper movie would be an insult to any other movie regardless of genre actors director etc. the movie's message is incredibly distorted and superficial. Just because people act "proper" doesn't mean they're suppressing themselves. It's not realistic to act the way you want and disregard every rule that obviously keeps society in harmony. Daphne just comes in and ruins everything for everyone. Her dad's political career struggled solely because of her acting like an ill-bred. She is incredibly inconsiderate and immature beyond her years. The only entertainment we got out of this movie was from laughing at how weird and wrong the plot felt. Cinematography narrative elements and acting was good despite all but that's about the only positive thing i can say about this movie.
American Horror Story: The End (2018)
I died a little
I have been a fan and every seasons' premiere had a goosebumps element to it, some significantly better than others, but this one didn't move me at all. The set up, new actors, and the mainstream-ness of the topic combined just made this a painful experience. I hope they preserve their originality and don't give into popular culture nonsense just for profits or whatever.
Compulsion (2011)
Gr8 cinematography and communication w/ the audience
In my opinion this is a misunderstood film. The simplicity of the writing allows room for more creative content and focus to lay in other aspects such as, editing, sound design, lighting and framing. This is a conscious choice made by McVicar and it is evident in how he chooses to structure the film. The writing is pretty straightforward and not unique but other elements are cultivated and focused on greatly like the editing, framing, lighting and sound design. Just because there is no explicit dialogue to establish the story, it doesn't mean that the audience lacks information. I think the rating is a bit harsh. Sure you need to pay more attention than a mainstream popular culture film, but the movie gives you a pretty good understanding of what's happening without dialogue and that is much more special and futuristic than your average dumbed down movie.
Pacific Rim Uprising (2018)
Deserves more than a 6
I am pretty shocked about the raiting on this film. I am aware that its not a 10 but given the poor understanding i think this film deserves a boost. First of all it was engaging through out the film yet there were small details missed like having literally no one to fight on the entire globe and using inexperienced children. But overall the cinematography had amazing quality, not being a fan of fight scenes I throughly enjoyed them specially the one between the rouge one and gypsy. The movie had some quality twists. Such as i thought the head of shao(?) to be the villian and how they introduced the true villian was WAY better than your average marvel movie. From the death of the monster to the beeping of the car alaram it was well constructed. I think its important to appreciate those little twists like the decieving last roar of the monster or the failure of the last escape pod. Everyone is capable of understanding those twists and in a way it is more educating in the overall film techniques than a simple and sort of dumbed down transformers movie.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
A movie for when you want to clear your mind and kill time
The setting and the visuals are very creative, interesting and professional yet this is not a movie that you should expect a lot from. The movie itself is pretty self-explanatory, you don't have to do any thinking at all and this is not necessarily a bad thing.
I think it would be okay to say that it was a mainstream action movie, where things go down and two heroes save the day. Given that there are other movies that set the scale high, Valerian is not a huge success but it is not bad if you want to take your mind off of things for a while and just watch a movie that is gripping but not life changing. This can be relaxing since the movie just puts everything out there and connects the dots for you, yet it might be boring if you want some space to interpret and think about the plot and everything as a viewer.
Overall I think it was a nice action movie with really good acting that you should not expect it to be an absolute masterpiece in the whole action movie genre.
Approaching the Unknown (2016)
Focusing on the challenges within the mindset
Clearly it did not have anything common with the mainstream sci-fi movies, just like the Martian which was a mixture of comedy and sci-fi for people that are not really fancy about space and stuff. It focused more on the internal challenges taking place inside the protagonist's mind. When talking about sci-fi movie people expect to see more about the space instead of a human's drama, and this movie gave sci-fi movies a different perspective which i see from the reviews that it's not pretty much liked. But why not focus on people's feelings and what they go through on that absolutely challenging journey? Although there were absurd stuff like sending one man alone and then immediately sending the other one right after, also there was just one man that the protagonist was making connection with. I mean if you are the first person to go that far clearly there has got to be a huge team behind it, not just one man with headphones and coffee. Even though it did not focus on actual sci-fi, movie suggested a whole new type of space drama.
