His Only Son (2023)
I gave it a 10 - But...
I gave it a 10 - only because we're lacking movies like this -and this was undoubtedly made on a shoestring budget.
Some feedback however:
1. Isaac was about 30 years old at the time of 'the sacrifice'
2. GOD said HE would provide a lamb - yet a ram was given - indicating The Lamb of GOD later on
3. Abraham was 80 when Isaac was born - so he'd be 110 at this time
4. I've read some reviews...It's like people were expecting Will Smith to fly an F18 tomcat while surfing instagram 2.0 on his iPhone 30. Guys, it was over 4000 years ago. There were iRocks back then.
5. Abraham was not perfect - he lied quite a bit. He lied about being married to Sarah for example... GOD usually chooses the worst and turns it into the best. Moses murdered. David was a warlord. Elisha called on a bear to kill kids. Elijah had an ego. Jacob - well, he's a whole new level of imperfection. Everyone was tainted. Everyone failed... Then JESUS arrived!! Through all the chaos, sin and imperfection - HE shows up!
The Lazarus Project (2022)
Nothing new
It's been done before... Several times: Boss Level, Taye Diggs in Day Break (2006), Groundhog Day, Palm Springs, before I fall, Source Code, Edge of Tomorrow, See you yesterday - to name a few.
It's the same plate of food - just rearranged differently on the dish.
I love these kinds of movies - just wish someone would be more creative rather than rinse & repeat.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Honest Comic fan opinion
Ok - I'm not going to mince words.
Raimi is a horror movie dude.
He should've stuck to his genre of flicks.
Now I love Bruce Campbell, and Raimi's work - but Dr Strange 2 was a bit of a horror to watch. I don't think Raimi's ever read any of the comics at all - if he is even at fault in the final editing.
I love what Marvel is trying to achieve - and it helps explain why the X-Men weren't in Infinity Gauntlet, or Fantastic Four's non-appearance in other storylines. I love how they're trying to bring it all together in a very creative way - and their understanding and method of bringing these old 70/80s stories to digital life.
This movie goes in the opposite direction though.
Other than the brilliant visual effects and introduction of Charlize Theron at the end, it wasn't really that good.
And I'll prove it to you: You'll watch Spider-man or Avengers over and over in the next few years... This one, you'll feel "meh - I've seen it before" and give it a skip.
I hope the next one sticks true to Marvel.
Angola the war (2017)
...this...was...AWESOOOMMMME!
I grew up in the military.
My dad was in the SADF. He did his bit on the border.
He is a person of colour. He always told me that on the border, race wasn't an issue...the enemy was...
The SADF vs Swapo, Cuba, Russia and Angolans.
He once told me how he trekked over a day old battlefield to support the troops at the front.
On convoy, they encountered burned out Russian and Cuban tanks all facing Namibia. Later, the burned out tanks were facing each other and later still, they were all facing north... The SADF just ploughed through them all.
He told me about how quickly flesh on corpses were stripped by maggots, the insane amount of flies and the massive amount of spent bullet shells and helmets he collected.
He told me about the Recces, the mentally challenged guy assigned to "paddle" the bicycle fitted to the power generator and how badly the number 4 Rack Pack was.
War is terrible. It's horrible what man can do to each other. I wish it upon no man.
But I am grateful for what he and the others did - what they stood for and the honour they carried doing it. The war affected him badly - PTSD is very very real.
Viewing this all made me see it as he described it all.
Great cinema, visuals, story-telling, everything.
MAN, South Africa could box, hey?
Jagged (2021)
Jagged little gem
I'm not sure what these other reviewers were smoking, but Jagged was great. There. I said it.
I was 18 when I first heard Alanis play on the radio, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I'm 45 now.
This nostalgic trip back to when music was music, when artist still experimented, when life was care free, Apartheid had just ended, and we were all brimming with hope for a future - made me reminisce on how great it was to be alive.
Artists were artists - today, we have studio groomed performers singing unfeeling songs created from dead templates that corporations mass feed to the public.
Everyone is encouraged to be unique as long as everyone is the same.
If there was no Alanis, there wouldn't be an Adele, a Joan Osborne, a Tracy Bonham, etc. She revolutionised the male dominated industry by giving it a massive middle finger.
I remember how she popped out of nowhere. I recall the rumours - from her being a former adult movie actress to men that wrote the songs for her.
This vid corrects everything and sets the past straight.
Her voice was unique, her stage presence persona was unfake, her music is timeless and her personality real... and if you didn't like it, then go listen to Jim Reeves, you pretentious tonsil. Every major female artist today have traits copied from the original.
The previous generation was one of strength.
Gen X was one without fear - like Alanis.
And this show reminds you of that.
Synchronic (2019)
An underrated gem
I don't understand why this movie scores so low - it's brilliant.
It starts off slow - but builds an builds.
Great acting and great story line.
