Not bad, not good, just...what?
5 February 2018
Considering 10 Cloverfield Lane was one of my favorite movies in a while and the Beyoncé-styled drop of this new movie, you would think it would be just as incredible, if not only somewhat less good.

But this movie was a mess. It was incredibly confusing and offered literally nothing to the Cloverfield universe. Actually, it did the exact opposite. I still can't wrap my head around what this movie was trying to go for.

The cast was great and did what they could with the script but it was just a hot mess. And I know I'm not the only one that laughed at that ending.

Expect the unexpected, and then expect the expected, and then the unexpected again
7 October 2017
I saw a pre-screening of Happy Death Day and let me tell you, it was one of the most fun theater experiences I've had. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously, which is definitely for the best. If anyone walks into a movie about a sorority girl living the same day over and over and being killed over and over and expects it to be some genre-defying horror perfection, that's on them.

However, that doesn't mean this is a bad movie by any means. Jessica Rothe as Tree Gelbman and Israel Broussard as Carter Davis are fantastic as the two leads. They have excellent chemistry and make us root for them. Rothe's character wasn't the typical horror movie sorority girl, either. She was cunning and badass. She made us believe she could actually figure this mess out. If you don't change your mind on who the killer is at least twice throughout the film, you aren't paying attention.

There are curveballs thrown left and right, which made my theater gasp and yell numerous times. You think the movie is about to end on at least two different occasions. The script is smart, there's horror, there's comedy, there's drama. Happy Death Day takes you in numerous directions, while also making sure you have fun along the way. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite campy horror flicks out there. It even pokes fun at Groundhog Day, which it very clearly took some inspiration from. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys horror; again, it doesn't redefine the genre and there are definitely an abundance of clichés. With that, though, there are still a handful of clever moments I certainly was not expecting.

Much better than the original
16 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I have only written reviews for maybe one or two other movies, so that is how passionately I feel about this film.

This is the best live-action Disney remake thus far. And I absolutely loved Cinderella and The Jungle Book. I'm so sad there are such negative reviews for this film, and I don't really get why, either.

I loved the original. It deserved the first ever animated film nominated for Best Picture. With that being said, this 2017 adaption absolutely perfected, modernized and matured the original. Emma Watson is the perfect Belle; she also makes her more independent, self-aware and bad-ass. She's the perfect 2017 Disney princess. Luke Evans also kills it as Gaston. He has an incredible singing voice and really brings the character to life.

The CGI really blows it out of the water. "Be Our Guest", the huge number in the original, is the best part of the film. I was clapping and gasping at how stunning the scene was. It's one of the best musical sequences I have ever seen and 99.9999% of it was CGI.

I loved the new songs and character backstories as well. They weren't too much, and I felt like they were appropriately spaced out.

Ewan McGregor, Ewan McKellen and Emma Thompson were INCREDIBLE casting choices and truly gave it their all, despite only physically being on screen for a few short moments.

On to the "gay moment" controversy:

LaFou, who is overwhelmingly gay in the cartoon, is much less of the "butt-of-the- joke" sidekick in this adaption. He is definitely comedic, for that's the role of LaFou, but he is also very level-headed, despite his affection for Gaston. I like that they made him more flamboyant, because, as stated, he is overwhelmingly gay. Also, I loved that they made an effort to show him switch from a female to male dance partner in that "gay scene" that shocked the nation. It gave him a happy ending, which he very much deserved, and overall humanized him, despite being the "bad guy's sidekick".

Overall, the effects, production design, sound, acting, singing and directing were phenomenal. I hope the online scores improve when more people see it - this film is truly special, and really sticks to the original while very much making it its own.

If anything, go see it for the incredible cast! You will NOT be let down.

I laughed out loud way too many times
19 April 2016
I saw the trailer a couple weeks ago and knew I wanted to watch just to see Anna Kendrick. I just now finished the movie and I'm impressed with the whole cast. The movie is not very original (i.e any killer couple movie), but the humor is absolutely spot on. It's very sarcastic and just over the top dumb, and I absolutely loved it. Sam and Anna have fantastic chemistry and really work off each other. I found myself pausing just so I could laugh about how ridiculous some things were. And all in a good way. It's a little violent if you aren't into that, but all in a very light tone. If you're in the mood for a silly comedy that isn't super raunchy or sexual, this is the perfect one. I loved it. I honestly would love to see a sequel, or hopefully Sam and Anna work together again in the future.
