Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
A mixed bag of themes
I liked it and was puzzled by it.. I found the film trying to be everything and spreading itself too wide to stick to one particular theme - it started on a serious note promising to be more of an in-depth dystopian cyberpunk, then it moves into young adult fiction style - Motorball?! What? C'mon.. The film picks many strands and doesn't follow up on any of them to the end apart from Alita's love interest.. I found the film more of a set-up to multiple sequels to come.. overall, though, it's beautifully made and has some cool fighting scenes along the idea of the dystopian cyberpunk..
Jaws (1975)
Not sure if this is the real review more of an experience watching the film
My mama isn't a keen film viewer and never was. For her to watch a film it must be a real something.. Jaws was it, surprisingly! Watching Jaws was made even better with mum's running commentary on the strength of the shark & the sincere concern for the three men on the boat.. some of the highlights of this commentary were "Now I see how difficult it is to catch fish, so I won't complain about the price (of fish)", "Is it a documentary?" The two brilliant summaries of the film at the end were "it's one hungry shark" and "Finally!" when the shark blows up.. 😅 by the way, my mama suffers progressive memory loss..
Charlie's Angels (2019)
Irritating
I don't remember myself ever being so irritated and angry watching a film. But this one did it.. When Charlie's Angels film was released with Lucy Liu, my girl Drew and Cameron D, I felt - yes! Girl power, step forward - puh-leeze! But this.. this!! This is not just one step back, this is several steps back, imho. The whole film fell flat for me: dialogue, jokes, using guns.. not even Patrick Stewart could save the film for me.. delete, delete, delete from my mind and my memory.. gotta watch the true Angels (2000) to restore the balance..
Once Upon a Time in Londongrad (2022)
Speculative journalism
This docu-series had me laughing - not because greedy people are being found dead, but because the trailer made an impression that these chaps discovered hard evidence and something new that no one else discovered before. Alas, not the case. The "documentary" is more about how millenials discovered Russia's wild 90s and made it their pet project. Everything the series cover was already reported by more serious journalists many times over. And even they couldn't produce any concrete evidence. These series offer nothing but "speculative journalism". One star for effort, but I'd say stick with cats quizzes for the time being. For more serious look on Russia, Ukraine and everything else, I recommend Oliver Stone's films.
Buried (2010)
Painful waste of time
Painful. This film needs to be Buried deep underground just like its main character at the end of the film. Oops, I just ruined the ending. Spoiler Alert that will save the two hours of your time. Buried attempts to copy the success of The Phone Box with Colin Farrell, except there is no phone box and no Colin Farrell. The whole plot revolves around the contractor who's taken hostage and given a phone to arrange his ransom only to be betrayed by all professions he relied on in his line of work. Yes, the film also tries to bring in political message in the mix. In the light of the recent events, I empathised more with the kidnappers than the American citizen who wanted to make an easy buck by profiteering in Iraq. The kidnapper said more truth in his few lines than anyone else in the film. And when a hostage working group (is it even a thing?) rep calls them "mere criminals", I'd say that's debatable and would be considered pot calling kettle black. My recommend - don't waste time and if you're really in search for a one-man thriller consider watching The Phone Box. Colin Farrell will have you on the edge of your seat for this one.
Trigger Point (2022)
Short and sweet
I'm glad they stuck to 6 episode format - short and sweet. The show is realistic enough to whet your curiosity, but I found the main IED expert Wash too emotional (I used to knowing them being calm and assertive in such high pressure situations), but I guess this is the point of drama/suspense. There are twists and turns to keep you guessing and some unexpected moves that had me gasping from the start. Well done, a well formed drama series. I liked it. I hear there are second series planned in 2023.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Strange and fascinating
QT is now simply showing off his tireless talent through the complexity of the storylines intertwining together. I didn't know what to expect but not such weirdness and over three hours long!! And what's up with the close ups of dirty feet and women snoring - inside joke? I had to look up Tate murders and I am glad QT re-wrote the outcome of that evening giving the memory of those killed a new life. I think this is the first film where I truly came to appreciate Brad Pitt's acting talent.. and Brandy is adorable!
Miami Vice (2006)
Waste of talent
What a waste of time and talent! The storyline also presumes the viewers know the characters from the start of the film. Nah. I found myself getting irritated and bored as the film progressed - and I like both James Foxx and Colin Farrell, so for me to get bored with their film is unusual. I think it's more about the direction of the film rather their acting skills.
Gemini Man (2019)
Surprised
Huh! I was surprised to find myself enjoying the film. It gets soppy at times with moments of passionate speeches regarding meaning and the purpose of life. But I did appreciate the overall message that life is for living and not for killing.
Possible spoiler: You can see at times that the younger version of Henry is actually CGI (doesn't ruin the film, though). It makes sense why the director decided to go full CGI - you know, CGI clones portrays the clone character.. ahh, unagi! 😂
Bad Boys (1995)
Product of its time
Finally had a chance to watch the film. It is the product of its time: loud action with things blowing up. Although, the film is peppered with humour, two grown men constantly bickering wore me out halfway through the film. It was fun to watch once, but not sure it'll become one of the repeats for me.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
Entertaining enough
Once in a while I do enjoy a good Arthurian interpretation. This one is slightly overdone with an awkward dialogue throughout, but entertaining nevertheless...
Some Like It Hot (1959)
All time favourite
My all time favourite film from humour to music to casting ensemble.. have lost count how many times I've watched it and will watch it as many times again..
The Godfather (1972)
Why have I waited so long to watch it!?
Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! Omg, why did I wait so long to watch this classic?! "What's the matter with you?" 😎😃 #Godfather.
