The Visit (2015)
The return of the Shyamalan.
Back in 2014, when you heard Shyamalan, you either thought of movies like The Village, The Happening, The Last Airbender, or After Earth. So you could imagine me being a little skeptical about him coming back, and even with the edition of comedy. But, it was a genuine surprise to me, as this movie had me both peeing my pants in laughter and terror in all the right moments. The premise of the movie is that a mother drops her two kids off at their grandparents house, while the daughter decides to film it kind of documentary style. But, things aren't all that they seem at their house. The camera-work that Shyamalan did was absolutely great, and the performances are spot on, unlike the planks of wood that were Mark Wahlberg and Will Smith in previous movies by Shyamalan. The film that this guy put out with just one location, a handful of actors, and a really low budget, this movie is amazing, and it's good to see that Shyamalan is back and here to stay! (Hopefully).
West Side Story (1961)
A great musical
Now, this is a movie that I legitimately enjoyed. I had to watch this in my music class, and like a lot of the kids, I thought it was gonna be some really stupid movie that I would have to "watch". I was delightfully surprised at how cool it was! The songs were catchy, the characters are well done, the romance between Tony and Anita are done very well, and direction from the late Robert Wise made this movie musical a smash hit, and my favorite musical aside from Grease. This is one of the very few movies that I like to watch again and again (the others being Die Hard and Back to the Future). If you happen upon a copy of this movie, I strongly suggest you buy it, because you will get what you pay for. One thing I'd like to mention as well. If you've been paying attention to Steven Spielbergs page, specifically the Director portion, you'll notice that this movie will be remade under his direction. I'm more sad than happy, because let's face it. It's gonna suck. Stick to the original! 100/100
Blank Check (1994)
Clichés everywhere I look in this movie.
Disney, really. This movie has Clichéd written all over it. It's like this movie has a checklist that just marks off every cliché that they have. And this really sucks because the idea of a kid having a blank check could've been a good movie. They just had to be original. But, they failed at that as well. Two parts really offset me, the first is the "romantic" relationship that Preston (the protagonist) has with the teller at the bank is really creepy. I believe that another movie had kids, specifically boys interacting with adult women in a romantic way. That other movie was milk money, which is equally as bad. The other thing that offsets me is the climax that takes place at Prestons house. It directly rips off Home Alone in almost every way, except for the fact that you're not rooting for the main character. The only redeeming factor for me is the Taylor Dayne song of "I'll Wait", which I thought wasn't half bad. You'd be better off staring at a wall for an hour and a half than sitting though this freak wreck of a movie.
The Brave Little Toaster (1987)
Oh Yes. It's Epic.
When I was 5 years old, I went to the video store and saw this very movie. After a not so long contemplation, I rented the movie. I genuinely adored the movie, loving everything about it. Cut to 2010, when I saw The Brave Little Toaster on DVD. I hadn't seen the movie in a long time, and I was wondering if it still held up to me even nowadays. The answer? An enormous yes all the way to Jupiter. The story is actually not bad, with a bunch of home appliances embarking on a journey to find their master. The characters? They are more well done than a steak, with each actor and actress taking their roles and diving headfirst into their characters. The songs are still just as good as they were back then as they are now. And the Disney animation really hits a bullseye as well. I loved this movie to the death as a kid, and now, coming back to it in 2015, I still love and will cherish it until the day I die. If you haven't seen this movie, are a fan of Disney, and love a good kids movie that can entertain kids as much as adults, give this movie a watch. You won't regret it.
Super Buddies (2013)
There's bad, then there's Super Buddies.
Air Bud was a really good movie. I still like to watch it today. Why Disney executives had to make air bud and his children overstay their visit, I don't know. The movies just seemed to get worse and worse. And the series really does show, recycling constant jokes that we've heard in the other movies. Not to mention, in this movie, its execution as a superhero movie has been done so many times beforehand that it's not even that big of a deal anymore. The clichés are so obvious, and you could see them coming from a mile away. I think that even kids know that this movie franchise has way more movies than it should. And should another installment be released, expect me to return until these movies stop being made.
