Crocodile 2: Death Swamp (2002)
Death Roll
Pretty decent Sci-Fi monster movie. And it didn't involve Phillip Roth! I remember watching it on the Sci-Fi channel as a kid. I liked large reptiles, so this movie appealed to me. I actually own the movie. This is a good Sci-Fi movie. It isn't a regular Crocodile movie. I haven't seen all of the 1st one, but it's about kids on spring break getting attacked by a local Crocodile. THIS MOVIE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT. And because of that I like this one better. There are 2 things in this movie, though, that I seriously question anyone involved in the production. I mean there IQ must be lower than a plant if they didn't catch that it might be stupid. But, it's a Sci-Fi movie, so what do you expect. #1: Crocodile 2: Death Swamp, how shall we start it? Bank robbery=perfect. Yes, it's true. That's the first one. So next, how do we get from a bank robbery to a swamp? That's right plane high-jacking. So the 1st half hour is not that of expected, but that's what makes it an above average Sci-Fi movie. Now I'm not going to explain everything that happens in the swamp, so I'll just summarize it. Giant Crocodile follows people and eats them. Now I'll talk about good things. Pretty good characterization. I mean, we don't everyone personal reasons, but we get a good idea of the robbers and some of the passengers. The final scene is pretty cool, too. The main character has a nightmare, and wakes up. Suddenly we see the swamp where the Crocodile lives. Tense music comes, and suddenly you hear the roar of the Crocodile. Just a cool little thing. The movie doesn't just focus on the Crocodile, which is good, but has good character conflict. CGI can always be better in Sci-Fi movies, but is OK. This movie shouldn't win an award, but if it's on TV, or at blockbuster, it is worth the watch. (Oh yeah, just about everyone is a potty mouth, just about every minute of the movie. Just a warning.)
Python (2000)
Big Snake
This movie is sort of interesting. I'm not saying it's good, but it's not that awful. Yeah bad acting. Special effects kind of suck. But if you start the movie, you probably won't stop it. Some of the stuff that happens is funny. If you're in the mood for something light, this wouldn't be bad. Basically a giant snake eats people in a town. Not that bad. A lot of things could have been better, but the movie is kind of fun. You might not want to watch the movie again, but you will remember it. Robert Englund does OK. Casper Van Dien is kind of stupid. And the sheriff is Billy Zabka, who was in the Karate Kid. It's a fun movie to check out, but it's one and done.
Python 2 (2002)
The Python Franchise (Spoiler)
OK, here we go. I saw this movie on the Sci-Fi channel when I was like 6. The big difference between this one and the 1st one, is the attempt. The 1st one didn't really try to make itself very serious, making it a nice corny B-movie. The bad things about this one is that it tries, and Billy Zabka. Main idea: giant snake captured by U.S. Plane carrying that snake is shot down by Russians. When the Russians take the cargo that contains the snake, all heck breaks loose. So Billy Zabka and his gang go in and try to kill it. There isn't really anything funny about this movie. Mostly sad. The thing that upset me most was that Billy Zabka dies. THE ONLY RETURNING CHARACTER dies. Yeah, good way to attract your audience. He was the only character in the movie that had a little bit of luster. So they turn him into a bad guy. The snake CGI isn't the best, but it's manageable. The script has some holes in it, but that's not what killed this movie. Another funny thing about this movie is, the only well rounded characters in this movie get killed. If you can look past all that, though, the movie is OK.
Boa (2001)
Good Monster Movie
Whoever came up with this idea definitely had a good imagination. The co-writer and director of this movie, Phillip Roth, has been known to do his giant creature movies on the Sci-Fi channel. He has over 80 producing credits in the last 15 years, and some notable Sci-Fi channel names are: Python, Python 2, Boa vs. Python, Lake Placid 2, Bats: Human Harvest, Lake Placid 3, and Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines. There are many more, but I think I got my point down. Phillip Roth has been doing monster movies for almost 20 years. But this one nails a pretty good example of what others lacked. Main idea: a giant snake is running loose in a big prison in Antarctica. All those monster movies I listed up there don't really have an unsuspected setting. Python takes place in a regular town, Lake Placid 2 is in Lake Placid (I think?), and Wrong Turn 5, I mean come on, are the hillbillies going to move? The acting in this movie is OK, special effects could use some work on, but the script is what makes this movie a pretty good monster movie. It can be suspenseful, and you want to see the characters get out. Overall, this movie isn't going to win an academy award, but if you want to see a pretty decent monster movie, check this one out.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1999)
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Movie Review
Most adaptations of this beloved story are renewed with new stories, but this one sticks true to its roots. The story isn't as much as a horror movie as it would seem on the cover, but more of a drama about Ichabod Crane trying to fit into the town and fall in love with Katrina Van Tassel. The acting is pretty decent. Brent Carver as Ichabod Crane does a good job of capturing the way he acts, and severe difference from that of the other men in the community. Rachel Lefevre (who is now a star in the show "Under the Dome") does a sub-par job. She doesn't show much emotion throughout the movie until the end. Paul Lemelin, who plays Brom Bones, doesn't really add much to the movie for me. The cinematography in the movie is beautiful, and definitely nice to watch if you like that. It also captures the art of story-telling in the movie that many people probably don't realize. The whole movie is based around guys telling a story at a bar. So if things are exaggerated, remember, it's a story at a bar, it's bound to change. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and would recommend for anyone who has ever found the story of Sleepy Hollow interesting.
