Dark but Romantic Drama
10 September 2015
If you like dark dramas with a touch of romance, then this is the movie for you. The film is actually very true to the book and absolutely engrossing. The acting in the film is truly superb so much that the characters come to life on screen, so that you almost can become them and see through their eyes. This is a moral play, as well as a look at the way society imposes rules of conduct. When I came in toward the middle of the movie, but I got sucked into it. I find it a great movie to watch on a nice rainy day. Obviously, the book is practically required reading after you see this movie. Truly a haunting movie that you will remember for a long time and keep coming back to.

Overall a fairy good film
31 August 2015
I just recently watched this film for the first time and was impressed but the film, it was pretty good. The acting was faultless and I must say there was a stand out performance by Abby Cornish. The cinematography was equally of a high standard, there are several scenes where the lighting and atmosphere really help you feel part of the story. I also should give kudos to the costume department, their choices were perfect.

Looking at the film itself I should say its a very well told romantic tale the story between Fanny and Keats could so easily have become a more sentimental one. But through a natural dialogue between characters a little bit of humour and good control over the story line Campion has managed to make a really good film. You can feel the emotions coming across and take the emotional journey with the characters throughout.

Its just a really nice film.

This is what life is all about!

This film is just amazing. Fantastic. I can't praise it highly enough. Emmanuel Luzbeki kudos why oh why didn't you get an Oscar for your cinematography? The scripting, the acting quality perfect deliverance and execution. Is this an example of how the Academy awards films based on their gross at the box office and not their quality of workmanship. This film is one of my particular favourites, damn sure it was one of the best films of the mid 90's. (Braveheart took the Oscar for this year), I am not going to deny the fact this film makes me well up every time I watch it. Its a tender heartfelt story free from any clichés. There are not so many films that really touch my heart like this one. Go Watch It NOW!

Excellent, A Truly Wonderful Movie!
19 August 2015
The promotional material that was released for this film including the descriptions that appear on the box to me bear no resemblance to the film itself. Queen Victoria is suffering from terrible grief after the loss of her husband and the film is about her loyal friendship with Mr Brown. Why they describe it any other way I cannot fathom, perhaps only because they think it will sell more copies (but disappoint more people at the same time). Both Dame Judy Dench and Billy Connelly CBE both play outstanding parts in this film. Both characters are complex and have deep emotion which both stars pull off exquisitely. Anthony Sher is also excellent and with such amazing makeup can actually be confused for Benjamin Disraeli.

This film is about real people and these real people have real emotions and that's what this film is about. I only mark it down because of the incorrect labelling of the film by the marketing people.

The best version of this I have ever seen
13 August 2015
I must confess I haven't read this particular Dicken's classic, I have no idea why and perhaps I should, but I simply cannot say how good this film is. With today's on demand binge watching world, I don't know what impact this would have because it was serialised on the BBC in 30 minute episodes with each one having a cliff hanger forcing you to wait for the next week. But this was in fact how Dicken's first released this story, he put the sections of the book in the press once a week and made people wait for the next instalment. The production is outstanding as you would expect with BBC Drama, its faultless. Every aspect of the damp dark gloomy conditions in which people lived is brought to life accurately. Every member of the cast fits their part to perfection, Gillian Anderson who would have thought! Skully she isn't in this what a transformation!

good film weird ending
6 August 2015
This film was pretty good I thought, but the ending had something a little off about it which is why I only rated it an 8. The film is a little big graphic in places, its one of them films you need to concentrate a little to watch if your interrupted then you loose track of what's going on. But I guess that's because of the subject the film deals with. Geoffrey Rush is superb in this film, he has a remarkable gift of playing strange characters. Perfectly suited to this film. Michael Cane is just an amazing actor and once again delivers in this film. Kate Winslet is one of my favourite actresses, she can take any role and make it her own, she also delivers with this part. But without a shadow of doubt the stand out performance from this film is Joaquin Phoenix. Damn good film watch it now!

Carrington (1995)

By far the best character study of the last 30 years!
4 August 2015
This movie is taken from the biography Lytton, the movie tells the story of the love of a lady called Dora Carrington and her love for Lytton. The movie has amazing drama from the outset. Lytton is a gay writer who's type is specifically young men, Dora has had many lovers, but they only love her body and not her personality. Its true that Lytton also loves her but he says as he is gay they cannot sleep together because nothing would happen. Their love for each other is not sexual is stronger and deeper than that.

Emma Thompson and Jonathan Pryce deserve special mentions for outstanding acting. In fact the entire cast is just superb. But Thomspon and Pryce lead. The story allows you to gain an understanding of the casts feeling without needing to be said. There is an argument because whilst they love each other he is only sexually attracted to men and their is nothing he can do about it.

This film is so good it holds your attention from start to finish. Wonderful lovely film.

Stylish cool film
31 July 2015
This is a very interesting film, there is for sure a hint of sexual repression in it, but I think that's true of all of the Director (Campion's) films. Given the script, Nicole Kidman has a standout performance, I just think that the director didn't get the absolute best out of her, with her character somewhat lacking in belief. Her character just doesn't seem as believable as she could. Perhaps this is because the Director didn't allow enough time for Kidman's character to evolve from an innocent to a cold corrupted woman.

Its for this lack of character development I felt I couldn't give the film more than a 6. There is just something lacking - almost chopped out of the film. a simple 3 years later isn't good enough explanation for such a dramatic change in character. In addition I feel there is no formal ending to the story. The production and cinematography give this film a higher rating that it might of otherwise got.

Not bad but could have been better.

Beautiful yet Powerful
31 July 2015
It might take you a couple of attempts to sit down and watch this film, its a little slow to get going and certain characters might tempt you to give up. Don't! Please give it the respect it deserves and allow it to play on I promise you won't be disappointed.

This is a beautiful yet powerful drama. Its true that some drama's push a certain political correctness at you this drama is more story telling in nature with a hint of liberalism in it. Its a thought provoking drama, which I myself thoroughly enjoyed. The production was beautifully done There has been criticism of the quality of acting with some calling it poor or wooden and I can see where they are coming from, but I myself found it very good, I just think compared to some of the shows around maybe I have different tastes to others.

I think its wonderful and recommend you watch it and form your own opinions.

Beautiful Play about Women on Stage in the 17th Century
31 July 2015
If you think this is another run of the mill play adaptation forget it! this film makes a very good transition from stage to screen.

Ned played by Billy Crudup plays women on stage, at a time when only men are allowed on stage. Recent rule changes by the king allow women on stage, so a young girl with a passion for drama called Maria (Claire Danes), aims to change people's thinking and in the process win the heart of Ned (who is bisexual).

I have to say this film has more thought, more story, and in my opinion better performances from the actors than Shakespeare in Love. The theme of sexuality is explored with a great deal of intelligence.

Its a heart warming love story with exceptional leads and a superb strong supporting cast. Well worth watching.

Big Screen Adaptation of Jane Austin's book
31 July 2015
First saw the film I think it was mid 90s, seen it quite a few times since then, I love a good Romance. I think this is one of the best films that have been set in the early 19th Century. The film focuses on two sisters, their loves and loses, their romances I think its a perfect depiction of English Society within the time period concerned.Emma Thompson's script is almost as good as Jane Austin's original book.

Kate Winslet plays a perfect part, dreaming of her beloved Willoughby. Emma Thompson also plays a wonderful part of the older sister. Greg Wise is just amazing in his role of Willoughby. Allan Rickman plays Brandon.

The art, the music, the whole image of the film wonderful. If you haven't seen it yet - what are you waiting for thoroughly entertaining.

Everything I could wish for in a film and more.
31 July 2015
This film had just about everything that I could wish for in a film, plus a whole lot more. My hat off to Terrence Malik as Actor/Director every piece he produces is a work of art every frame is like the brush stroke of a painter against canvas.

If your looking for a standard run of the mill film this is not it! If you want to see exactly what the true art of film making is about then this is truly for you. And what a treat your in for. I am not sure why but I found this film to give me religious and spiritual feelings.

This film has as much character as any human being. There are scenes with nothing but natural sounds. The scenery is just so beautiful and natural as well.

You really most see this film.
