The 6th Day (2000)
It's fun, It has a plot that you will actually think about
This very well writen and shot sci fy movie hasn't lost a thing to its age. I feel the screen writers should be given proper complements because this is well put together. You can understand the reasons for the "bad guys" to do their things and you have an hero that just happens to be placed in a situation were he as to act. It makes you think about cloning and how easy it is to collect/steal someone's DNA. If you really think about it what does the swap for Covid test collects from everyone? It makes you think doesn't it? And with just that thought one links this sci fy movie plot with today's reality with DNA collection methods being ofered for fun findings such as ancestry and looking so harmless... without most people realizing their ID as humans is going to be given for others to keep.
Replicas (2018)
Another bad Keanu Reeves movie
Seriously, why do people still keep casting him for this roles? He sucks!
And apparently he takes all the movies he is in with him. This one is not an exception. The dialogue is amateur to say the best and the script very week.
Positive: Thomas Middleditch's acting.
The directing and general look of the movie.
Life (2017)
How stupid can a crew of astronauts be?
When will america stop trowing into space the most stupid and incompetent crew ever?
Every sci-fy movie in space is the same: they found a strange organism and decide to be incredibly no-scientists about it by "playing" with it. They always have to touch it! Not even a kid would have done such a thing.
This movie is a bunch of stupidity after stupidity committed supposedly by intelligent people that work they way up to be one of the few chosen to live in space! Yet every action they take compromises their lives in a very serious way. They do mistakes of judgment a seven years old would have know not to do. I cannot wash a movie full of this stupidity.
They grab a LIVE extra terrestrial organism, isolate it then start to touch it and play with it. They think it is cute! And pet it. Who does this? I mean this people are supposed to be scientists, smart and not even a kid, I repeat, would act this way.
And who goes on to be the first to play with it? The only guy on board that is irreplaceable. When the organism finally attacks, the crew refuses to go into rescue wile they still have time. When the foreign organism releases the man's hand is LIVE body keeps on floating around but NONE of the crew goes inside to rescue him - and they were debating on doing it so just two seconds before. When they still have time, they refuse to take action. When is too late is when all the "bravery" (stupidity) comes to surface and they all start to give orders to each other, panicking. Another demonstration of immaturity and lack of hierarchy - they always panic and start to speak and shut at the same time wile the foreign organism is doing its thing. They don't take action before or after. So this foreign organism kept inside a container releases this guy hand and he is floating around. What does the crew do? It keeps on looking trough a glass window. Instead of taking the opportunity to recollect their colleague they actually stay around waiting for the foreign organism next move. Witch is to release itself from the container. Yupi! It is free! That's when the crew decides to open the door and take their coligue. They ad plenty of time between the release of the guy's hand and the break trough. But no... only when is extremely dangerous is when they put themselves in a life and death situation. So this guy goes inside the lab were this thing runs free, takes the colleague out but they shut the door on him because the "thing" garbed is foot. Then he is instructed to "burn" it. It is obvious the thing reacts to eat but will not be harm by it. Still this guy keeps on using the fire to try to kill it, instead of using it to establish a safe distance and get the hell out of there. All this time their colleagues that are still safe outside (or so they think because they have the injured colleague with them) do NOTHING. Is when this foreign organism gets inside the man's mouth that all the orders and panicky mode resurface and they all start to shut again: lets go grab him!
First they close the door on him and are unable to instruct him to use the fuel-limited torch to safely get into the door. But when the guy gets invaded and starts to spit blood is when they think something can be done to help him.
Oh please stop making stupid movies!
They have technology but plot wise USA keeps on doing the most ridiculous and insulting movies ever.
I've stop seeing it after all this stupid stupid plots.
Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
It has all the ingredients of the 1st movie
I was surprised to see low scores for this movie. I guess the reason is people compared it to the trill of watching the 1st and that is just unfair, the novelty could not still exist.
Saying this, I really enjoy it. It has all the same ingredients the other one as, even more. The line of writing is the same. Plot wise it brought back all main characters, killing the ones that could not come back for more (of course) and introducing new exciting ones. Sleazy dialogues? Well, go back and watch the 96's movie and you'll get sleaziness too. Probably more.
Nothing is really missing: Bill Pullman's motivating speech (tacky in 96 and in 16) is still there. His presence is still strong and his character still gets reverenced has "The" president. You also have kids with some screen time, you get to see Judd Hirsch again, always funny and the dynamic with Jeff Goldblum is still enjoyable. There are tons of aliens and ships. Unlike that movie made by Spielberg and Cruise that was crappy has hell and gave no one an alien (except for Tom's face). Come on! No one can score that one better than this one.
Special Effects are what we all got used to see and in the right measure: great, not ostentatious, not over the top, not fake looking.
The acting of major roles and support ones is well done. In the end you still cheer for humans and you despised the Aliens. And when humankind wins... Well, maybe is too soon to celebrate?
A new novelty comes in a sphere and I will not say more. I enjoy it.
A good movie to see on TV, maybe more so than on the big screen, since I believe it must be more enjoyable to watch this lying in your comfortable couch than sitting in a movie theater pack with strangers probably kicking your chair, eating or answering phones.
Pros: The original cast reunion (except you know who and I didn't miss him). The faithful character dynamics
Cons: A noticeable effort to place Chinese dialogue and characters.
(is too forced and both are weak)
Maigret: Maigret Sets a Trap (2016)
Not exciting enough but watchable
This is a detective drama that puts Rowan Atkinson back on TV on a current role: chief investigator Maigret.
I found this to be not trilling, not dramatic and quite predictable. Rowan does not convince me has a detective. Not because any comedy association I could have made with his persona but because the character its not there. I really enjoyed his performance in Keeping mum (2005) witch had nothing of is physical comedy so I watched this with no reservations what so ever. But I found him blank. Has some other characters has well. His "deduction skills" are not there, are not brilliant or admirable, they just pop-up like if written in a convenient script.
I don't believe this Maigret stories were the best choice for a TV show, because this one seems very beat and predictable. The action is set on France - Maigred is a french detective - the crimes happen in french locations, the newspapers, the postcards on the streets, everything is in french. Yet, they all speak English. Witch is fine... if they had let this extras and the music be English to!
Goof: When the press reporters follow Maigret up the stairs and inside the police department, they all stop by a glass door. Before the police crosses the door it says: "brigade criminale" after it reads "Police judiciaire" - witch by they way, is the expression Maigret uses at least one time to present himself. Again... french expressions in English context. Kind of weird.
I know this is a one-hero show but I also disliked the importance the director gave to Atckison's character. Did Rowan really had to be on screen almost every time? Too exaggerated. His wife was also unnecessary in the story, because the director fails to deliver the importance of their accomplice relationship. I found the ending terrible cliché and it re-forced the impression the TV movie/series gave me that it was all about the star behind the role.
Far from Poirot(its even an insult to make such a comparison), with a poor direction and many characters portrayed has caricatures but watchable.
Positive aspects: Inspector Lognon. Almost without lines in the movie but it was the first character I was not able to dodge my eyes from. Good cinematography and nice but not flawless time reconstitution.
The Do-Over (2016)
Two old faded stars trying and failing (VULGAR and UNFUNNY)
This movie is a waste of everyone's time. Go do something else. Take that long time you need to wax or something... Its worth it when compared to this.
Has I was trying to watch it and care for it, all I see was 2 old ex Hollywood starts, trying to act like if time had not pass for them. There's not ONE single young boy cast in this movie. And I don't think its a coincidence. A young man would show how old the main actors are. But young women? Of course! Always young, always sexy, always jumping on dicks and always falling for the two old farts "charms". That I have to say are... null.
I could not keep on watching this. Moving forward till I got the end was the best decision ever. But even that was cliché!
The movie is just has a boring patchwork story, full of sex clichés, cheap vulgar dialog, not funny at all. Sandler wanting to be credible has a big action hero is a joke! Maybe the only part were the public can smug a smile because the result is that ridiculous. All the time Spandler's wig was fixating my attention.
Everything bad that has been said about this movie is true and more can always be added. This is brain torture. Save yourself from brain cell damage!
The Bronze (2015)
Very well made drama with humor in it
For those who like senseless comedies or all Adam Sandler's movies, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU.
The Bronze has no linear characters, is not base on stupid comedy where people go around having sex and showing boobs. Yet, if you like a good sex scene, this movie has it.
The Bronze's characters are more deep than usual for this type of comedies, witch is a bless for my senses, I have to say. It has rude language but is not vulgar. I would describe it has a drama with humor in it.
People have this strange notion that all comedies are for children's eyes. I don't agree so my recommendation is, before you let your kid watch it, be sure you approve its context. Has I said before, is not a rude film, but its honest. And sometimes a story told with honesty can be choking.
Tumbs up for: 1- the non linear characters (that fish for pet was a good gag) 2- The Olympics gymnastic subculture (the endorsement scene was great) 3- The outstanding stunt doubles's work
The Cokeville Miracle (2015)
Truthful to the facts, it will warm up your heart
This is a movie about a true event. Just like Apollo 16, the movie has to show what happened and not make up stuff on the way. Apparently to be able to watch a story no matter personal prejudices is not a ability many can reach.
Saying that, lets make a review on this movie!
This a well done movie and its easy to spot the director was very cautious about filming it according to the facts. Some small changes where made (I've search it on the net), i believe an example would be the child that suggested a collective pray, but the movie keeps truthfully to the facts and time-frame has it is movie possible.
Inspite of the horror its going to tell this movie ends delivering to the audience a good worm feeling inside. One has to wonder, really... What has happen there?? Not even the bomb experts could explain why the explosive did not blasted everything near by. Then the children started to report they knew nothing bad was going to happen because they were told so by «angels».
Miracles do happen. And they seem to be easily reachable to those who have a lot of faith.
The only thing the movie could have invested more time on (but understandably couldn't because of its length and characteristics) was in the developing of the facts after the explosion. I've watch a documentary done years before and that gave me a better insite of this remarkable story. I know many of the now grownup children and families didn't wanna to have anything to do with the reporter's cameras or to see their drama or their faith explored by sensationalist media.
Yet, I'm glad they made a movie out of it. And I guess they can be too.
Malcolm in the Middle (2000)
As good has an onion
Why writing a review for an old and off air sitcom? Because I'm thinking of those who haven't seen it and what they would be missing out.
I'm re watching this show and all the pleasure it gave me back when it aired is coming back with even more flavor.
Today I can more fully appreciate the many layers given us by the writers, directors and actors. I compare the plot and direction work to the act of pealing an onion, each layer is followed by another equally funny and full of meaning.
Going on watching it I can see absolutely everyone involved in this sitcom gives the best performance possible. From the amazing large supporting cast to all the six major roles: Hal and Lois (the parents), Francis, Reese, Malcolm and Dewey (the sons).
But one caught my attention slyly more: Reese. today I found it amazing how deep and complex the performance is, how accurate and full of range, taking the fact he was the most stupid and troublemaker son, one would think it was an easy already-seen character to do, but it is not. Reese if full of his on "onions" layers.
Its easy to end up feeling the same way with practically all other performances, including several secondary ones. Amazing grandma, Stevie the wheelchair friend, Eric, Hall's friends... can't name them all.
. . .
One particular episode from season 3 stood on my mind. The one Lois and Hall are specially centered in some issue related to Hall. The plot does not center on them but in the sons, Dewey in particular. While the older children are going with their lives complaining adults don't get them, they can only sense the parents are acting weird, the young one wants a dog for a pet but has to content himself with the school mascot: a rodent. He is the one that could actually know what's going on, since he is always there when the parents are talking about it. But he is to young and to focus on his goal to really understand: Hall went for a medical checkup and they found something... it could be cancer. A very serious and real life situation inserted into the sitcom in the most brilliant way: the perspective of the clueless children to their parents drama and worries.
In the end of the episode Dewey's problems with the school mascot are solved when he decides to release the pet into the wild, inside an exercise ball that he also fills with pet food. This ball would become a recurrent gag in future episodes. The rolling pet ball keeps on appearing in the most unexpected places.
There's also other great plots like when the parents think another kid is on the way, when in one opening scene Hall enters his kids room in panic and offers money to the one that would take the "blame" for something he did that left Lois seriously mad. Also interesting is the episode that explains how Hall and Lois started this all family ordeal.
These are just some of many good reasons this show is even more interesting to keep on watching over the years.
Naturally I felt some curiosity about what all of this actors are doing today. No need to talk about "Hall". When he got the major role in the Breaking Bad series his talent was no surprise. I'd watch him in this show. But what about the others?
Is quite strange (but common) to realize astonishing acting performers do not develop into long lasting careers. Specially if one his a teenager or a women of a "certain" age (aka: not so young).
I do believe Hollywood has double standards.
The Neighbors (2012)
There's worse out there so... should have last longer
The Neighbors - what a weak title for an extraterrestrials TV show.
The first time watching it I though: "It is terrible!". But it also has something to make it enjoyable.
The premise of "kind of stupid" aliens passing has humans is what makes this show attractive. So one stays on watching it hopping it would bring something more.
The characters are linear. The situations most of the times are transparent. The acting can be really bad, major character's voices anoyingly pinchy and squeeze, weak screenplay. Inspite of this major errors, maybe because it is not supposed to be taken seriously, the show brings 20 minutes of fun. They say in their corny opening credits "30 minutes" but their math is obviously wrong.
Special regards to the actors who played Amber and Jackie Joyner- Kersee. They where excellent (read this with the voice of Mr. Burns from the Simpsons).
The developing romance between the human and the alien came to be the best part. Not credible at all are the children's characters. They are all Kids acting like know-it-all adults. None is normal. That gets very tiring to watch and it is annoying. Bad casting? Probably. I came to realize it was painful to hear and watch "Dick Butkus", witch is another untactful name for a kid's character.
I never though The Neighbors would have a second season but it did and is far better than the first one. To ABC to have cancelled this is... well, its ABC. Be very careful when stepping on ABC ground. One should never start watching an ABC TV series before the 4rd or 5th season.
The Jungle Book (2016)
Refreshing story telling
I loved it. Its a wonderful movie. What can I say? The main character portrait by Neel Sethi who plays mowgli nails it. Its not every time one see a child going so well in a role. Very well directed? Maybe. But that just increases this movie quality. The feelings, the face expressions, the body language, is all there. I cannot say precisely what is CGI with Mowgli and what it's not. I guess all is CGI for sure but the beauty of it is... No one notices!
Isn't that what makes the better movies?
Urray for Bill Murray! He also nails it. Like usual... Lets admit it. He just fits well in this and his ways actually improves his character, thanks to the sarcastic humorous thing he does so well for so long.
To be nitpicking there was just one little tiny personal think I felt to be out of place: King Louis's voice. It kinda made me loose interest in the story... Maybe he should have been the snake!
Any way, its a very well done film, with a plot that actually develops well and the most agreeable thing is... it differs slyly from most of Hollywood animation story telling.
If one goes and see it with a child just has to make sure the kid can take it. This is a movie with talking animals, with action and fight scenes. Not extremely violent but the danger is felted and insinuated by bushes moving, mystery, worried animals... A very small child can feel troubled by the natural/quite unnatural laws of the jungle. I'll say... not under 6, at least.
Oh, and stay for the credits. Stay!!
The Visit (2015)
It's bad
Predictable. Has soon has one kid says "we never seen them and don't know how they look like" I knew what was coming up. And so it was.
Every single detail. Even the clothes in the end, the computer who would reveal the true identities to the stupid mother who goes in a holiday and sends her kids to live with people she does not speak to for more than 13 years and without ever have providing ONE single picture of papa and nana - the very much annoying way this kids that have NEVER seen their relatives always speak to and of them.
This movie is all film with a moving hand camera, witch is to say the camera is always moving, the actor looks and talks into it and it's not even done in a way one believes it.
The plot is supported by 2 kids, who have to go trough the intensity of a range of emotions they can't obviously get. They are supposed do fell mature for their years but they just aren't believable.
Bad predictable movie for me.
Poirot: Curtain: Poirot's Last Case (2013)
Poirot, a murderer?
I feel so disappointed with Poirot being a murderer that I cannot aprove this episode.
Jamais, mes amis, would Poirot take justice into his hands. I do not find this to be according to his character. And he commits suicide after?
But then I realized it was Agatha Christie's decision. And has the story sinks in - I just saw it for the 1st time - I start to gradually be more acceptable towards it all. A killer that never actually kills but is most deadly effective... Police could not legally have done a thing to stop him.
Yet, Poirot's little gray cells should have provide him with much better ways to have the evil man rightfully punished without resourcing himself to murder! A DUEL OF MINDS... Poirot could have led the other into an act his true character would be exposed or play with him until he harms no one but himself. That way the death would be by the killer's won hands, not by Poirot's!
But that was not Agatha's choice. Being able to write this much adventures for one character must have been very challenging. It was time to Poirot to retire... in a big Bang.
I guess that is exactly what happen.
Production wise, this episode is as perfect has every previous one. This is one of the most agreeable detective period series ever being made. Lovable scenery, wardrobe, locations, colors, traditions reconstitution...
There's a delightful parallel were the audience finds a very old Poirot in a wheelchair, not able to walk and very sick. But the mansion he gets in is has bad has he is. The settings are according to the end of it all. Winter time, rain, huge old mansion, greyish, empty, decrepit... Beauty has seen better days around there. Yet somehow that place still has the ability to take your breath away. You start to wonder what to be that old must be like. To the little gray cells...
And that is why I conclude Poirot becoming a murderer just maybe justifiable. That much older and sick I do not know what it feels like. Maybe its plausible. A big part of me still finds it out of character and I'm guessing a religious person has he was would not enjoy opening the way to the «other side» with a fresh murder followed by his own suicide.
Plot wise, Agatha's story feels less real because it seems to me people would not be so naive towards such manipulation of their minds, since some where quite suspicious. The way old Poirot ends up drugging a person is also very easy. I was enjoying watching Poirot again.
Forsaken (2015)
Am I watching a Bruce Willis rip off?
Cliché is the word that absolutely describes this movie. Imagine all western common places and you get this movie spot on!
Nothing here is a surprise. Sutherland, the son, does not have what it takes to hold the movie. His performance is bland and has a conflicted tough action guy he leaves a lot to desire.
All the time I got the impression I has watching a bad Bruce Willis impersonation, brrrr! And it only got worse when the long-last ex girlfriend end up to be Demi Moore. Did the producers wish they had Willis? Some catching phrases also seem taken almost literally from Die Hard's script.
In the ending scene, I just laugh. The always-the-same narration over the image of the "hero" horseback riding to the horizon has he leaves town after saving everybody's live... LAME.
I didn't care about him. He just wasn't THAT type of hero.
The movie misses everything that could make it agreeable. Performances, scenery or direction AREN'T enough to help it. It's a forgettable one.
Solid performances from «the villains» and Sutherland - the father, though.
Exposed (2016)
Don't waste your time
Very, very BAD movie. A waste of time.
Don't watch it. I was deceived by the ratings. This is not worth a single star.
Half the movie is in Spanish. Witch is fine for me, I understand both English and Spanish. But it's still a horrible movie. And if the false ratings are there just because the «latino» audience liked to ear mother tongue to be spoken, that's just sad.
Keanu just makes another disturbed cop that kicks the «bad guys» ass with lots of f* and s* words in the middle.
It was decided to use just one pretty girl with perfect skin and let the others surrounding her be much less attractive. Somehow that was stupid.
There's no story and nothing fits. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME! Anything else would be better. Go and make a cake but don't go and watch this.
