Kajaki (2014)
This is the sort of film that makes grown men cry.
I was recommended this by a fellow ex-serviceman as I'm usually pretty weary of this stuff. It is a little bit slow to start. (But then life in the Army can be like that.) Then it go's wrong spectacularly quickly. (Life in the Army can definitely be like that.) If you haven't served in the British forces you might not get this film, at one point I was sat quietly crying when a guy spat out a one liner that had me in creases. I won't go in to the old "them and us" bit, comparing British soldiers to American soldiers, suffice to say that these guys are very understated hero's. No hullabaloo, no histrionics just guts and above all a camaraderie that cannot be replicated anywhere else. But don't take my word for it, judge for yourself. Please.
The Stagg Do (2014)
This has the potential to become a cult classic
I first became aware of The Stagg Do through Facebook. Having been on my fair share of Stagg do's and with it having a (by and large) local cast I followed closely as the premier hove into view. This is, like many, a film produced on a budget. However that by no means belittles the film or the cast and crew that put it all together. Indeed the premier(held in Newcastle)was a lavish affair with the brown ale flowing and more pork scratchings than you could shake a stick at. (Which I firmly believe, is how they're made)
Now on to the film, a fairly standard story of boy from the wrong side of the tracks meets girl from the slightly better side of Darras Hall (Google it) They fall in love and the boy, being of traditional northern stock agrees to a Stagg party which as usual doesn't go to plan and the future father in law does his best to spoil the fun.
Not being a professional film critic (or particularly well educated) all I can say is that I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Considering a lot of the cast were first timers I thought the acting was very good. The production of the film was flawless and the story line was, by and large very funny, if at some times a bit bizarre. If you have the opportunity to see the film I thoroughly recommend you do so.
