American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules (2020)
Trash teen comedy with girl power-esque vibes
I've never watched any American Pie film before in my life. Only seen some clips maybe a few scenes. The genre just wasn't my favorite but I just happened to watch this one of boredom. I'm not impressed at all.
Another very generic typical high school "I gotta get laid before graduation because my life depends on it" film. We don't need movies like this anymore. They're so boring and ridiculous. Honestly I'm not mad just extremely unamused.
Gotta love the predictability too. Of course something, or in this case someone, has to get in the way of our "strong independent woman" clique. Then, of course the other guys they meet along the way turn out to be their matches. Ugh God I fast-forwarded through half the film.
I'm all for a sex-positive film for girls but there's nothing learned here. Like there's no message aside from a vague one about finding the right guy, explore your sexuality or something.
The whole thing was too painfully heterosexual for me maybe that's why I stopped paying attention.
I guess the only okay thing I can say about it is at least the majority of the "teens" aren't 30 years old (well except the Grant guy)
That's it. There's really no good thing about it at all.
Tyler Perry's Young Dylan (2020)
Tyler Perry is a menace
The TV promos for this show already proved it literally has no substance or purpose. Just another poorly written Tyler Perry project, loaded with stereotypes and typical black "urban" tropes that he loves to ingrain into our community. However, this time the target audience is kids 12 and under.
I saw a clip floating around on Twitter a while back. In 30 seconds, they used 15 laugh tracks. The kids weren't even saying anything funny! I tried watching a little of the 1st episode, but nope. It's just like I expected: unoriginal mess. A poor attempt at modernizing Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
I know its harsh to say, but the child actors are very annoying. They're playing stereotypes too. Sassy daughter, cool rapper kid, nerdy uncool kid. Its exhausting.
I feel bad for the kid who plays Dylan because his character is awful. Probably a nice kid, but god he needs better lines or something.
Sad to see Nickelodeon falling apart like this.
The Half of It (2020)
Not bad but not very interesting
I usually avoid teen rom-coms because they're boring as hell. I decided to give this one a chance.
This film tries to go for a more progressive approach and I appreciate that.
I like that the "shy person talks to popular person without them knowing" trope was being challenged a little. However, I think if Aster was recently (& happily) single and didn't feel like dating right now would have been better for her character. Instead of the usual "popular girl isn't into her popular bf anymore but stays with him because fitting in and peer pressure" trope. She could've been a character trying to rediscover her identity after the break up.
Aside from that, I did like the film a bit. It wasn't super deep or tropey. I would give it a 6.5 though if I could. It just didn't interest me too much. The way they described different kinds of love seemed a bit surface level. Just wish they would have tried to be different some more instead of playing it all safe.
Overall, Leah Lewis gave a great performance though. The guy who played Paul reminded me too much of Evan Peters for some reason though.
Very laidback teen romcom compared to other garbage Netflix releases.
6 Underground (2019)
Just alright I guess...
I started to watch this while getting my hair done, then went home and finished it out of curiosity.
Honestly, just felt like another one of those Netflix action movies that isn't super low budget but tries too hard to seem like it's part of a huge film franchise. Throw in some attractive stars, explosions, sex, violence, one-liners, and a pinch of a simple plot. There you have it. All the ingredients for your typical Netflix action comedy. To be honest, I shouldn't be surprised since it's a Michael Bay film. This reeks of his usual male gaze action movie stench.
One other little gripe: I'm getting a bit tired of Ryan Reynolds playing the quippy main action guy. He sounds like Deadpool in every film now.
Is it a terrible film?
Not really. Just too on brand. Perfect for when you have no clue what to watch though.
Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling (2019)
Nostalgia Purposes
Even though I wasn't born yet when the original series was airing, I did enjoy watching reruns.
This special still captures the weirdness that I liked about the show. It also addresses change and I liked how self aware the episode felt.
For nostalgia purposes, this is a fun little send off to watch. Because we don't need a full blown reboot or remake of every nostalgic thing. Looking at you Disney....
Twelve Forever (2019)
Pretty Decent Show
My sister watched and she enjoyed it a lot. I like that its normalizing LGBT relationships and exploring growing up.
My one problem is the main character, Reggie. At times, she seems really impossible to like with how childish and irresponsible she is. I get that she doesn't want to grow up and getting older scares her a bit but sometimes she's very obnoxious and selfish towards her friends. Oh well, I guess we were all somewhat like that in our pre-teen years.
Point Blank (2019)
I don't even know what to think of this....
Honestly, this was just a filler movie to watch after I binged other shows all day.
I'd look away for a few minutes and the plot would make less sense because the pace was so fast.
The only thing that drew me to this film was Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo. Too bad they couldn't save this film. But hey they're still rolling deep in Marvel money so it doesn't matter. Their characters could have easily been played by newbie actors and this movie would have flopped 10x harder.
Also what was up with the excessive use of random old songs???? Added nothing to the plot and just sounded like someone pressed shuffle on an "80's hits" playlist.
Incredibles 2 (2018)
Enjoyable but...
I saw the original Incredibles when I was 5 so my opinion on it has changed a lot. I was so excited when they finally greenlit this sequel. After watching it, though I enjoyed it, it was slightly predictable.
Evelyn was obviously the villain (Screenslaver) the second she showed up on screen. The way she talked about heroes and how she was upset about their parent's death just made it so very obvious. Also where did Underminer go? He got away and that was it.
Overall, I felt nostalgic watching it but it has it's flaws. Jack-Jack vs the raccoon was the best and it was great seeing Edna again.
