Addison's Wall (2006)
Very compelling, elegantly suspenseful.
I was not bored for a second during this film, and I'm not sure why others keep feeling this way. I thought it moved at a very quick pace, was tightly shot, scripted, and edited, and maintained a nice level of subtlety and mystery without being gruesomely graphic.
This film is not flashy; there are no explosions, no computer-rendered phantasma, no elaborate high-budget sets. It relies on the stark black-and-white imagery and characters to set mood and move the plot. This is the kind of movie I love: one that doesn't rely on cheap tricks, but on simple, elegant, old-fashioned artistry in film-making to produce a compelling flick.
Why aren't there more pieces like this out there?
I, Robot (2004)
One of the worst movies I have watched and without redeeming characteristics...
I viewed this movie under the impression that it was going to portray the world in Asimov's book of the same title. Sadly, I soon found out, it was nothing like Asimov's clever creation. However, once I realized that it bore no resemblance (despite the 3 laws), I put Asimov's work out of my mind and hoped for a good cinematic experience.
Before I continue, I'd like to mention that I have seen plenty of terrible movies. In fact, I enjoy watching old B & C movies and revelling in their ridiculousness. This movie, however, didn't even bring the pleasure of something as awful like "Night of the Lepus." In my opinion, the low point of this movie was Will Smith's character. One expects the single dissenter in a society (and hero(ine)) of a movie such as this to have a valid, well-based reason for their distrust. Will Smith's character, though, dislikes and distrusts robots merely on instinct and with unfounded prejudice. Not to mention, his character suffers from a severe 'macho man' complex, where it is necessary for him to consistently prove his manliness in scene after scene. I can't think of anything more suffocating to watch.
"I, Robot" is without a doubt one of the worst movies I have watched in several years, and is without redeeming characteristics. Even the portrayal of the robots was unoriginal and the action scenes predictable. I am so glad I did not waste my money seeing this in the theater.
