Irish Wish (2024)
Just bad writing
Let me start off by saying that I love Lindsay Lohan and I grew up watching her in movies like the Parent Trap and Mean Girls so I was expecting something in that caliber - light but fun. However, besides the gorgeous Irish scenery in this movie there's not much to balance out the horrible writing, bad costume design and often ridiculous acting.
The story is very predictable - which is expected - but predictability can be balanced out by charming characters and smart dialogue both of which were lacking in Irish Wish. Lindsey didn't have chemistry with either of the male leads or even her supposed best friends and their dialogue seemed infantile, cliche and downright bad. Her two "best friends" were awful characters often leaving Lohan's character behind and not to mention one of them pining after her fiancé in the name of fate.
The story obviously wasn't anything new or groundbreaking but again that's to be expected. However, I had to physically roll my eyes when once Lindsey's character undoes her wish and seeks out the love interest, he informs her that he's turned down a dream photography job in Bolivia after meeting her for two seconds on a random bus. Just ridiculous writing and absolutely unrealistic plot.
Then we get to the costume design. I honestly don't think I've ever seen a movie with such bad styling. Lindsay is dressed like a posh grandmother for 99% of this movie, wearing anything from a Chanel twill two-piece that even Emily Gilmore would envy to a deep red pantsuit with pearls. The Irish people in this movie look like they've been teleported to the screen in a Delorian from 1925 wearing clothes that no Irish person would wear today. Is this how Americans think the Irish dress?
The cast's acting was lacking to the point where I giggled at the scene where Lindsey's character is crying at the lily pond - which was supposed to be the emotional high of the story. Lindsay and the actress who plays Emma's character both had a noticeable amount of work done on their face and you can literally see how it limited their ability to act in scenes, trying to force expressions on their face - it was painful to watch.
Så var det jul igjen (2023)
So much second-hand embarrassment
I had to turn this film off halfway through it gave me so much second-hand embarrassment.
Then I started reading the reviews here and that made it even worse - are people seriously blaming Jashan, the lead character's Indian boyfriend saying that he's 'playing the victim' and is destroying family tradition?
Get a grip people, the whole film is just so full of micro aggressions towards this poor man (from people saying his traditional Indian food smells bad to people literally GASPING when they see him) I felt awful watching this.
Thea is possibly the worst character I've seen in a romcom in a while, just letting his fiancee get bullied, ridiculed and left out (they all speak English yet choose to speak Norwegian around him which is just awful) and yet she never says a word. She also doesn't tell Jashan about their family traditions - in one scene everyone is wearing the same Christmas jumper except for Jashan, which could easily have been remedied by Thea thinking ahead and buying an extra for Jashan. She also HIDES her engagement ring at the start of the movie when she senses that her mum will be less than accepting towards her Indian boyfriend which is just awful and speak volumes of her character.
This is the nightmare scenario of every interracial couple. Do not watch unless you like second-hand embarrassment and racism.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Missed chance
I want to start this review by saying that this show is indeed something different. I overall enjoyed it, the acting, the whole story with the tapes, the structure, the suspense, it was remarkable. I loved that they did not use the usual stereotypes, the main cheerleaders was NOT a mean, blonde white girl, who's dating the captain of the football team. The gay kid was not the shy but ever so handsome bullied wallflower, who's secretly having sex with some popular guy. The show had nearly everything to be absolutely perfect, it was fresh and entertaining but sadly, it missed. I gave 7 starts for this show because there are huge problems with the plot, even though I enjoyed watching it.
1. Hannah Baker (who's called by her full name by everyone for some reason) killed herself, BECAUSE she was bullied in school. She makes 13 tapes about certain people who led her to this decision and blames THEM for her own death. Sure, she was hurt, and most of us went through something similar in high school (except the rape) but this was entirely her decision and blaming someone else for one's own decision is just not okay. Which brings me to my second point.
2. The show's portrayal of people is false. They portray Hannah like a normal, mentally healthy young woman who was bullied hence she committed suicide. This is completely false. A mentally healthy person with a normal level of self-esteem will not commit suicide. Yet the show didn't even try to mention depression, or any mental illness for that matter.
3. My third point is connected to my first. The show makes it very clear, that everyone is to blame for Hannah's death except Hannah. I don't think that this is a message teenagers should hear. Partly because it justifies suicide, but more importantly, because they will think it's their fault. Like Alex in the show, who could not take it anymore and shot himself in the head, because he wrote a stupid a list about her classmates's ass. Or good old' Clay who's blaming himself for Hannah's death, to the point he nearly jumps off of a cliff even though he did nothing wrong.
4. Clay is a kind character. He loves Hannah, he would not do anything to hurt her. But wait, he is on the tapes! The suspense is growing with each episode, people telling him, not to be so quick to judge, until he heard his tape, Tony telling him he will understand everything after he listened to his tape. Tony even says to Clay that he is the one who killed her. Then, it turns out he did nothing. Even Hannah herself says it on the tapes: he did nothing wrong. A hole in the story. Why would they say these things if they knew Clay did nothing wrong?
5. This is my last point. The show's message is that we have to be kinder to each other, stop bullying others, pay more attention. However Hannah finds it okay to encourage people to bully Tyler (breaking his window, and taking pictures of his naked butt) to put the weight of her death on other's conscience which led to another person's suicide. I simply can't understand how is that okay? Especially towards people like Alex, Zach or Clay. I understand why she did it towards Bryce the guy's a rapist. But the others? Isn't that the same thing they did to Hannah? I understand that they somehow 'deserved' it according to the show but being a vigilante is not the right way.
The Walking Dead: The First Day of the Rest of Your Life (2017)
Those badass days are gone
I remember when I first started watching TWD. It was unique and badass I was hooked instantly. Then after a while it went downhill but I was willing to put up with that too. I felt so invested in my favorite characters I was not ready to give them up. Then Glenn's fake death happened and I felt cheated not to mention the season 6 finale. But it was this season, more particularly this episode that made me realize that this show is not going to return to its roots. The plot is meaningless, every season they come up with a new enemy, and every season they win then move somewhere else. This episode was the last straw for me. Horrible dialogues, boring flashbacks, cheap CGI. Am I the only who thinks that Shiva was just as bad as that CGI deer? What's really bothering me though is that I don't care for the new characters. Not Sasha, not Rosita, not even Abraham and certainly not Tara who got her own episode for some reason. And the people who I do care about like Carol, Maggie, Carl they barely got any screen time and even then their lines feel out of character. It's like the writers are not even trying anymore. As if anybody thought Michonne would die, or Carl for that matter. I feel terribly angry that I wasted my time with this episode (and season) and my only hope is that the directors realize their mistake and end the show while it still has some dignity.
