Midsommar (2019)
Disjointed, lacking suspense, and grueling slow with little payoff.
Think of Wicker Man without the mystery. Think of Get Out with out the helpless. Think of Scooby Do without the meddling kids. Now you can get a glimpse of the pointlessness of this movie.
I thought due to the hype that it would reflect the fore mentioned movies with a new twist. I was severely disappointed, hoping the punch would eventually come. I'm still looking, having endured the runtime in search of interesting characters and purposeful plot.
The first twenty minutes are unnecessary. They could have merely eluded to Danni's family tragedy and developed her poor relationship with Christian, while having the anthropologists discussing their interest in Pagan rituals. Which would naturally turn to the invitation to the festival building intrigue and curiosity amongst the group.
There were obvious clues, as they arrive on the two track dirt road meeting Pella's brother whom basically says "You brought four ( victims)? Cool , I got this couple from England. (This is similar to the premise of Get Out.)
When they enter the buildings and see tapestries depicting the events within the rituals, no one asks questions. Through out the entire movie few questions are asked at all. I thought they were anthropologist taking notes on cultural rituals?
After viewing reviews that suggested what is supposed to be occurring I found no evidence from the performances.
This movie is very disjointed and a waste of time.
Cobra Kai (2018)
Daniel San still hasn't figured out balance
I had high hopes, however John is having a stronger character swing than Daniel. Daniel still allows his emotions to control him and can't balance his life.
His daughter has been training, yet his son is a spoiled jerk.
Daniel is famous for having won two championships 35 years ago. Hasn't anybody won at least as many or more in thirty years? John had won before. Why isn't he recognized?
Why is Johnny such a Neanderthal that has no knowledge off the internet or any changes in 30 years?
Godzilla (1998)
This Godzilla is fun and entertaining, though borders on comedy. it's Jurassic Park meets The Gremlins.
I love the origin and the mutation of iguanas through nuclear testing. The set up is intriguing, but Godzilla would never "hide" in New York City.
I like the characters and the monster is great, though it isn't the King of Monsters. It is an afraid mutation that is trying to understand how to adapt in this world. He actually climbs on top of a building, King Kong style and cries.
If this movie had not been a Godzilla movie it would have been rated better with fans.
Perhaps The Attack of the Giant Iguana: (you mess with nature and it'll bite you in the but!)
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Oh my Godzilla! He's mad and ready to regain his throne
This Godzilla is far better than the 2014 start of this series. There is a credible human story that goes back to the Original storyline about environmental issues.
Godzilla has more personality as well as a purpose.
This story gives more background on the ancient struggles of these Titans and their rivalries. This Godzilla takes control and even Mothra has a few tricks up her sleeve. Ghidorah shows why he is a villain.
A very entertaining film with great monster battles and an evolving human story.
King Rat (1965)
A bit lack luster compared to other pow movies
Having heard of King Rat for years I recently watched it and found it wanting. The description of the movie reminds one of Stalag 17, yet King did not feel the animosity from the other P.O.Ws that Stilton did in 17. It also lacked the intrigue of 17.
Also the men in the camp appeared much older than a service man captured for possibly 4years.
The friendships didn't seem genuine enough for the betrayal in the end.
Regrettably, I ca not recommended this movie. Better off with Stalag 17, or Bridge onthe River Kwai
