Kiss the Abyss (2012)
Solidly Weird Film
To be honest, I had pretty low expectations for this movie when I saw the box cover. They were blown out of the water pretty quickly though.
From the unusual premise, to the solid acting, to the wild characters, to the narrative style, there were plenty of surprises. As a whole, it was pretty outlandish concept with some over the top acting. But it really sucks you in as there are some truly unique moments that were very fun to watch.
Everything worked well from a technical perspective. The effects were good enough not to detract from the story. The production values were high. I'd give this film a strong recommendation to any horror fans (and people who like weird movies).
Murder Party (2007)
Hilarious!!
I saw this movie at Slamdance 2007 and really loved it. It was truly one of the best movies I saw at Sundance/Slamdance (If not THE best). The story - normal guy finds a note inviting him to come to a Halloween party where art students are waiting with a plan to murder him for the sake of art) while a bit outlandish, was serviceable. But the performances really solidified the movie. Chris Sharp as the boring, civil servant victim was the epitome of understated brilliance. The rest of the characters were all hilarious in their competitive pursuit for the grant money and all the performances were note perfect. Excellent on-screen chemistry and fantastic visual effects. Can't wait to see more from these filmmakers.
Southbounders (2005)
Excellent!
I caught this film on Saturday at the SMMASH film festival in Excelsior, MN. It was completely sold out and the Director and lead actors were in attendance. I had heard of people hiking the Appalachean trail before and had heard of a documentary about a guy who made the hike last year that I thought might be this movie. Turns out this was a narrative and not a doc, but still excellent.
You would think that a movie about people walking wouldn't be very interesting, but they really did a good job focusing on the personal relationships on a life changing adventure. Accurately went through the ups and downs and it was obvious that Ben Wagner had been through some of these experiences himself. I wish there would have been a Q&A afterward so I could have asked him some questions about the making of the movie.
Slackpack steals many scenes. Christopher McCutchen is super funny. If you see this movie around, you should check it out.
