Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
A fun movie that delivers what it promised
Now I will not say Alita Battle Angle is a perfect movie. Some of the scenes feel a little forced, and a few of the side characters really should have had a bit more development. With that said this is a great movie with great characters. You can tell everyone in this movie felt their roles, and wanted to make this movie into something special. Even with the flaws Alita Battle Angel deserves a 10 star rating, and should be scene.
Justice League Dark (2017)
A solid DC animated piece that will not be for everyone
This movie is an interesting take on the JLD run. I do not agree with everything it does, but I do believe it holds it's own. One complaint people new to the magics of the DCU may have is that Zatana and Constantine seem to have limitless power. Trust me there are lomits, it's just this is a short animated piece, that really doesn't have time to go into that.
If you can overlook that, then this movie will entertain you, but it will fall short if they never do anything with JLD again. Over all the animation is toght, the plot is dense with out seeming to rushed, and they got personalities right.
Turbo Kid (2015)
the best of the 80's today
A movie from the 80's, about post- apocalyptic 1997, filmed in 2015. If that line doesn't get you excited, then this movie is not for you. Turbo kid is everything you found in the 80's movies, even obnoxiously long opening credits.
Turbo kid is a coming of age movie set to ultra-gore, and all of the movie tropes of the 80's. You will laugh through out the movie, and that is even with Turbo kid in no way being a comedy.
This movie is gory, but it is not bad as it may seem. The levels of gore are so far over the top that you have to laugh at them, so even if your not a fan of violence this movie still has a lot to offer.
To me the best part of the movie is the characters. You get attached to them, and enjoy when they are on screen. Michael Ironside is a presence on screen, but he has to really keep up to not be out done by any of the other characters who shared a scene with him.
If you lived through the 80's or love films from that time, then you owe it to yourself to watch Turbo kid.
Blood Widow (2014)
You won't be floored, but you will enjoy the ride
This is your average slasher, with a slightly unique killer. Overall Blood Widow hits the marks; annoying victim, no cellphones, and a drawn out back and forth of people being were they should not be. Those are the tropes of the genre.
Where Blood Widow excels is giving us an interesting killer, it's a woman! Okay this is not ground breaking new, but it is rare enough that it is worth noting. Also her costume is very interesting, and appealing to the eye.
The kills are all practical effects, and not CGI.that makes some things look a little cheesy, but it lends a bit of credit to the movie.
This movie gets it's grief, but I think it is worth a watch. The killer is all around interesting, and is fascinating to watch as she develops. The murder house is a good set, and the fact that the movie kept all of the effects practical make this movie stand out.
The Scribbler (2014)
This movie is better than it has any right to be
What can I say about this movie that "wow" won't sum up. This is a great movie with amazing pacing and interesting characters. The setting is dirty and broken, and the supporting cast is too. The story follows the life of Sookie as she tells the tail of what happened upon moving into an assisted living apartment in order to transition back into regular life. This story will draw you in and keep you watching from beginning to end. The movie is adapted from a graphic novel of the same name, but having not read it I can't say if this movie followed the source material well.I can say that some detail was put into doing a little research on the mental illnesses shown in the movie. It's not perfect in it's depiction, but close enough to suspend disbelief. This is a must see if you like sci-fi suspense, and creative characters.
Parallels (2015)
don't watch this great movie
Warning, this contains spoilers in that it gives a lot away of what this movie was meant to be. I try not to spoil any of the plot.
Lets get out it of the way, this movie is a pilot for what was going to be a show. Fox instead chose to make it into a stand alone movie, and not change anything. The acting is above average in this movie, and it follows along a story arch that is massive. As the viewer is drawn in, and given the next nugget to complete the story quest, we have hardly noticed an hour and twenty minutes have passed, and then the movie ends.
This movie gives resolution in a way, but just drops a bigger question in our lap, and then ends. You will not feel happy or satisfied at the end of this movie, even though it does everything right. This is literally the ultimate pilot show, and after you finish the movie you will be cursing that you will, most likely, never see another thing about this story.
With that warning out of the way this is a good movie along the lines of sliders with a more solid story. We are given characters that we can like, and the plot has a few twists.
