Vivarium (2019)
What happened here!?
A captivating film, which leaves one very confused and engrossed in the plot.
I think the beginning moved too quickly, too, because I wanted a bridge between the moment Tom and Gemma say they want to live together to when they go looking for a home, and also the moment they receive the child and grow up.
I found the idea of the concept of the cloned neighborhood very funny, and it's fascinating how it almost creates a universe of phobia when thinking about being trapped in that situation.
I'm not a huge fan of Jesse Einseberg's work, but I loved the role he played in this film, without devaluing the rest - because we know how incredible Imogen Poots is.
The ending of the film was a little predictable, as we discovered that eventually destiny/history will repeat itself, but I hoped there would be some justice on Gemma's part.
But I think if that happened, it would also lose some of its fun.
I understand why so many people don't like it, it's not a film for any cinematic 'palate', and eventually anyone who likes so-called 'commercial' films won't be a fan of this thriller.
Restos do Vento (2022)
A film that shocks, and ends up being predictable.
A film that shocks, and ends up being predictable.
With a slightly lost plot, you need to be careful to notice that the timeline changes, since there is nothing in the image, scenery or even characterisation, that time changes... everything seems to be on the same timeline.
Álbano Jerónimo does an incredible job, praising all his talent and regretting the rest of the film, which is consumed by a good amount of purposeless silent moments, very typical of Portuguese films, apparently - it doesn't seem like an appealing thing to me, at least less for me - since if these moments were canceled the film would probably only be an hour long or even less.
I didn't like Nuno Lopes' performance in these films, it fell far short of what he's really capable of doing, and all the intrigue and drama ends up being a little predictable. At a certain point I already said what was going to happen, before it happened.
The photography leaves something to be desired and there are some moments in the film where the shadows of the wind turbine blades are poorly created in the image and the shadow is turned in the opposite direction, with a completely disproportionate size.
There are also a few seconds of image, almost at the end of the film, which I think would have been due to a lack of images, which feature a photograph of the village scene, where you can clearly see that it is a static image with nature sounds in the background.
The post-production is a bit amateurish - but that's it, you can always claim that it's style and concept... even so, it didn't inspire me anything positive.
In my opinion, it should have been well thought out, and there should have been more material filmed, as the repetition of footage and 'blank' and still moments is torturous.
Lakewood (2021)
The most disappointing jogging of my life.
A film that left me speechless... in the negative.
I was expecting much more, I understand that due to COVID this film must have been recorded with some restrictions and some tight controls.
But spending 96% of the film watching Naomi Watts running through the woods and making calls - in desperation due to her son being at the epicenter of a terrorist attack at school - made it all very unrealistic. I wondered, several times, if a mother would really act that way in a situation like that.
Other than that, I found it tiring to just watch Naomi's various plans unfold.
I found the character, Amy, super boring, a little irresponsible and with moments of a natural Karen. At the end of the film, the question I had was... how much money was spent to make this film?
Yes... because I doubt they spent that much money to make a two-hour jogging film... I hope at least the actors were paid well.
Far from good. Disappointing.
The Girl on the Train (2016)
Amazing, if you like a good thriller, you should see it
A film that I always refused to see, I thought that because of the cast it would be pale, without any sense and that perhaps Emily Blunt herself wouldn't play a good role as Rachel, a character completely lost in the world of alcohol. But I was quite surprised to see her incredible performance and a story so well-crafted and so engaging that I reached moments where I had to control myself from getting into the plot and wanting to get into the middle of the conflicts.
A great film, with an incredibly well-done plot.
I think that to like and understand this film, you need to have the ability or taste for this type of thriller, as I don't see anyone who is used to seeing more commercial films liking this film.
Excellent!
Anna (2019)
It's Luc Besson, it's amazing
This is one of those films that at first a person sees, is suspicious, but then sees a cast with such good actors that they begin to suspect that everything is going to be incredible.
But he ends the film with his mouth open, completely perplexed by the twists and turns that a story takes, and just when he thinks he's heading towards a resolution, he takes another turn and in the end everything that seemed to be the end was in reality just another lie.
This one seems confusing, it's true, but I loved it.
A great work by Luc Besson, as he has always accustomed us to, and without a doubt it was a film that I saw accidentally and was on the list of the best films I have seen in recent years.
I miss current films like this.
Saltburn (2023)
Devilish, raw and INCREDIBLE
One of the best films I've seen this year, it's superb because it's so out of the box. The journey it takes us on is fantastic, in a psychotic but very well-crafted plot, which takes us to another dimension.
The casting is super well done. Rosamund is amazing!
The satire in this film is done with class and everything seems meticulously crafted, even the parts that seem crude and strange.
I didn't find the scenes that everyone talks about that shocking, I thought that a lot of the time people just like to pretend that they feel uncomfortable, when if possible, they even see worse things in their everyday lives.
We need more provocative films that push the envelope of ordinary creativity. We need irreverent content that makes us open our mouths every 5 seconds in admiration and shock.
I think Emerald has a knack for knowing how to season a film with the right ingredients, with all the plot twists necessary to leave us completely defeated.
Devilish and raw.
INCREDIBLE!
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)
The Long Boring Saga Games
I'm not even going to bother giving spoilers, there are already too many here... I just need to say that this film doesn't deserve the hype, nor the ticket money... I think it's poorly thought out and I don't think that's what it was were asking - at least some fans of the saga.
A mess, with a somewhat forced message.
There are many technical and casting points that could have been suppressed, but I think the biggest problem - I think - was the rush to make something and release it quickly for the world to "consume".
Quickly and well, there is no one.
This may serve as a lesson for future attempts.
I just regret the lost time.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
I don't understand the direction of marvel
To begin with I thought the plot was cute - the Rocket story - but the movie itself felt empty and lacking in overall purpose. It seemed like a silly excuse to do away with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Good music, but too much. There were times when I got tired of listening to Quill's 80's playlist.
The jokes in the film were forced, immature and meaningless, the first time I laughed was halfway through the film. Mantis and Drax were a couple that seemed to have potential in terms of history, but I noticed that since the Christmas special they are increasingly out of place and even seem a little silly.
Overall I don't give more than 5 stars.. I thought this movie was going to redeem Antman, but it wasn't able to.
Kevin Fiege should rethink tactics or else leave the direction of the MCU in the hands of someone else who can help the films stand out again.
The post-credits scenes... were just time wasted on nothing. I miss when the post-credits scenes had content.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
To like a Marvel movie you have to know this universe
I don't understand all the hate that has been distilled for the latest Marvel movies... I only understand from "Thor: Love and Thunder", which really was a waste of funds for such a bad movie.
But this movie is not bad. It's not one of the best, but it's not bad at all.
Don't forget that this movie was shot at the time of the pandemic and I believe it took some extra work and adjustments.
In my opinion I was only concerned about two things, the fact that Scott starts to become associated with a comical, sometimes awkward character and another is that on one hand we see a very comic book-like Cassie, but on the other hand it seems that there is a blockage on the part of Kevin Feige's team to be faithful to the elements of the "original story", which bothers me a bit being a fan of the comics - in short, that's my opinion.
I really enjoyed Kang, all the content, and I confess I was apprehensive about the MODOK presentation, but I was fascinated by the work that was done.
To like a Marvel movie you have to understand this universe, and I still think that many of the people who rate it negatively don't know what they are talking about at all.
Conclusion, good movie...not perfect, and by far to be one of the best.
I really hope they grab these new characters that are appearing (America Chavez, Ms Marvel, Cassie Lang, Kate Bishop...) and give the "Young Avengers" a future because I think it could work well.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022)
It didn't add anything special
I thought it was clunky.
I think money and resources were spent for forty minutes that were not that incredible or special.
The Christmas message was not very explicit and left much to be desired in terms of plot, they just put in a special appearance by an actor - not referring to the MCU universe - and the plot just revolves around that, in turns that reminded me of a rough remake of 'Tom and Jerry'.
Of the MCU productions this year, this was definitely the most lame.
I think people blindly worship everything marvel has done, and are forgetting what marvel is (origins, content, etc) and are cheering just because.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Pleasant surprise.
After the last few Marvel movies/series, I was starting to feel a little tired of the same formula and lack of impact.
I went to see this movie a little apprehensive but not even a third of the way through the movie I was already involved. The story is well done, well connected to the past events of the MCU and the homage and attention to keeping the memory Chadewick Boseman present in the film was of profound delicacy.
Namor was one of the characters I was looking forward to seeing, and I have to say that the scenes in the water were stupendous and the whole connection to the Mayan culture and colonization was well achieved.
Riri Williams made me even more anxious to see IronHeart, and I must confess that Letitia Wright really surprised me on the positive side - applause to this actress.
A long film no doubt, but a very good one and worth the wait and see.
The Sandman (2022)
could have been much better
Until the sixth episode it promised an adult plot full of interesting content, and even extremely similar to the comics, but from the seventh episode on the CGI effects became cruder and the plot direction more childish - it reminded me of 'Once Upon a Time' plot at some point (even the music).
In short it's good, but it doesn't captivate me to review and doesn't make me euphoric. It's a 'meh' for me.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
What is this...? 5 stars just for sympathy
Yesterday I saw this movie, finally, with much anticipation.
But it didn't take more than five minutes of the movie for the expectations to die completely.
I have been a Marvel fan since I was seven years old, and I never thought I would fall asleep in a movie of the franchise ahahah
The film is empty joke after empty joke, a repeated playlist. We get it Taika, you love 'Guns n' Roses'...
The story doesn't connect with the story in the comics, nor with the Marvel universe itself (I guess we can be creative, but we must remember that we are messing with other people's work - Stan Lee must be rolling over in his coffin with this movie).
The only good things about this movie, for me, were Christian Bale's performance and the final action/fight scenes.
Oh, I also thought that the push to put LGBTGIA+ representation was too forced, with the clear intent to sell and deliver a somewhat skewed message - use the theme naturally and positively, it was too forced and that's not good.
I feel like I spent money to be watching a movie that could have been an ordinary series that could have been on Disney+.
Honestly, I would have preferred to see the 'Ms.' series. Marvel' series in the cinema and this movie on the app, in series format.
I gave 5 stars out of respect for the brand, but honestly you should think carefully if Taika Waititi's work is so praiseworthy, and if you are not overestimating it. I think that of all the Thor movies, this is without a doubt the worst of all.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
I don't know how to feel - Sam Raimi you need, and must, read more marvel comic books
I don't know how to start ahaha I saw the movie yesterday, and I'm fell so confuse and can digest this movie.
I really like the movie, but...
I don't feel this Miss America, I love Xochitl Gomez work but it's not what I've imagined for this movie, that personality. Someone who lost that parents in so young age, I don't think that are like that - oh by the way, the story about how she lost from her moms, it's ridicullous ahaha if you know the real story, how she got lost, it's so much better.
Spoiler - the battle between Dr. Strange and the Darkhold Dr. Strange it's just cringe, how they transform a fight scene, with so much potential, in a scene from 'Fantasia'.. I feel all theather shaking in cringness ahaha
The scene transitions are just sloppy, look a lot like 40's and 50's movies, and the overlay scenes are little bit to much.
I was expecting for more characters from MCU (loki, iron man..)
And the post post-credit scenes give me a lot of anger ahah I wait 10 minutes of credits to see that dumb scene?! Bah
Oh and the way Wanda ends the movie make me feel just disappointed.
I feel like I like the movie, but in same time I don't like at all...
I really like the effects, everything was amazing. Love the scare jumps in the movie, love it, but also...
I've read a lot o marvel comic's and I am a huge fan, I was expecting something dark and powerfull lik in "House of M"... idk
I wish Sam would read a little bit more of marvel comic books and not feel so inlfated in his ego.. because this movie it's a perfect reflection of that, of someone who things to big because he get's used to be appalused about everything.
I really like it, but don't love it (sadly - expecting for more)
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
Amazing but empty
This movie it's way better than the other two, visually, the locations. Amazing.
But... a movie about fantastic beasts we see less and less creatures in the movies (by the way the Manticore concept it's sloppy and lazy - huge no); the policital tension and the relationship about Albus and Gellert it's just out of the concept of the movies (for that idea Warner should create a movie about them and not use Newt for that).
Newt it's not the role character anymore. Sadly.
I don't understand why in the beginning they talk so much about the magic schools and now we don't have nothing about it - I though the movies was a travel around the world, discovering creatures and knowing that schools and characters.. idk.
Sad that we wait 4 years, for a confused plot, with so parallel stories and dramas and so lazy movie.
Liked but not loved...
