The Axis of Evil Comedy Tour (2008)
Great show!!!
I saw them and they were great at the DC's Warner Theatre. I'm not Middle Eastern, I'm not Muslim, I am an Average Joe whose learned very little Arabic and I pretty much "got" most of the humor. Some of it had some cultural references nuances that were unfamiliar, but most of it was understandable.
Essentially it's a comedy tour about not so much about politics, but mostly about the Arab-American / Middle Eastern immigrant experience. The immigrant experiences has been done by everybody else so why not this group.
And thank God that they did! It was funny and also insightful to their culture. These guys were excellent comedians they made their point. Ahmed Ahmed was the best with his present-day and childhood recollection "Please go the store..." Hilarious!
In retrospect I'd have to say that as much as Westerners find it a fashionable to criticize other cultures, I'd say that perhaps it they who are wearing the burkas made of that delicate and woven fabric called ignorance. See this video and if you can catch the act in your city, go out and see them. It's good entertainment and good insight to other cultures.
Later with Bob Costas (1988)
It was a great show...
The previous writer was correct. When you watched the show you got to see a great interviewer and guests open up him unlike how they would on other shows. Kostas knew his guests and surprised them often enough with intricate knowledge about them. It wasn't stuff to embarrass them, but once mentioned it, he put them on queue that he had done his homework. I gather that the guests respected that and it created a chemistry that made the conversation easier. It appeared more real more intimate.
Some of the "Later... " episodes had incredible humor. Of all the shows I watched I can remember an episode with Dana Carvey. Costas had him go through his regular schtick and then posed another scenario... well, Carvey ran with it immediately improvised an impersonation of Jimmy Stewart being "serviced":
"Yeaahhhhhhhhhh...uhmmm that's good!"
"Real good"
"Do yah think you could just go over to the side a just a little...
yeaaahhh..."
There was an eruption of laughter. It was crazy. Kostas couldn't stop laughing and rolled out of his seat and on to the floor hysterically. You could hear the camera crew in the distance also in a state of rapturous laughter. It was brilliant. Carvey impersonated an American icon and placed him in the most unlikely of situations that anyone would think of him being in. I would LOVE to see that episode again on YouTube (no pun intended).
Shadowboxer (2005)
Excellent
I really like this movie. It rocks the senses visually and cerebrally. Lee Daniels pushes the plate and don't even think this is a black movie... but it's terrific film noir! All the actors are superb in their performances: Mirren- flawless; Gooding Jr.- Fantastic; Dorf- wonderfully sinister; Monique - Lovely; Gordon-Levitt - too cool Williams - brilliant went beyond what CWms3 does -- scary. Let's see some more of you in the movies? Ferlito - Very good.
Visually the film has some great lighting. Exterior shots make a beautiful contrast with the grittiness of the ongoing story. Now if I write any more there'll be spoiler. So just go and see this contemporary, funky movie. You'll be glad you did! Finally, Mr. Daniels: A JOB WELL DONE... Continue to defy the odds and the critics keep filming. Thank you for a great movie.
