Domino (2005)
Tony Scott is not Guy Ritchie
Okay, first of all I must admit that I do not like Tony Scott's way of directing at all. I went to watch this film just with the hope of having some fun... To be fair I must say that I laughed sometimes, but that fact does make the film a great film... not even a "correct" film indeed.
Tony Scott toys with the idea of being an "enfant terrible", but I think it's too late now. His directing of the film is pretentious, as if he wanted to create a cult masterpiece or something similar -it's... artificial and rhetoric, if this adjective could be applied to a film. But the thing does not work. The bad part is that, although it is not a superb movie, it could have been amusing and a worthy action movie, even a kind of indie road tale, if his delusions of grandeur had not spoiled it up. The lighting and colors help to create a good comic-like atmosphere, which match perfectly with the story... Buuuut the characters introduction is too long and there is an excess of camera movements, repetitions and "videoclippish" effects... Comparisons are not fair in any case, but maybe directors with more personal and fresher styles on directing, as Guy Ritchie, Luc Besson or Quentin Tarantino (be aware, I'm not saying that Mr. So-and-So is better than Mr. Blahblah, I'm only talking about different ways of making things) could bear with those flaws, but, unfortunately, this is not the case.
However, it has some good points to take into account, specially due to the cast -at least in my opinion: Christopher Walken can do whatever he wants to, since it seems that he is always playing the role of Christopher Walken, and we love it; Keira Knightley does not look like a tough girl, but she plays her role quite fine -as a side note I should say that she has nice breasts, although this is not relevant in the story; Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green prove that they have a really good sense of humor when they accept being themselves on the film, even when that fact includes acting like cowards and snob idiots, Delroy Lindo and Edgar Ramirez are correct on their respective roles...
In spite of my bad critic on this movie, my vote is not too bad for two reasons: first, because I'm able to "relativize" -I've seen worse movies by far, and second, because, even if it's not good, it's entertaining due to the rhythm of the action. To sum up, it may not be a GREAT (with capital letters) film, but it's amusing if you don't have something better to watch.
The Bodyguard (2004)
Boring, boring, boring!!!
I cannot say too much about this... errs... film (if it can be named that way)... It's simply boring: non-interesting plot, non-interesting action scenes, and non-interesting "supposed-to-be-funny" gags. The plot is a kind of never ending nonsense. I can accept things like this in some surreal and absurd humour pieces -like Monthy Piton's films, which are absolutely great- but not in a... let's say... "normal" movie. I mean, the only thing I expect from an action movie is to entertain me. If, as well as being amusing, it is a good film, so much the better. But the only thing I can say is that IT'S BORING!!! I expected to have, at least, spectacular action scenes, since Tony Jaa is among the cast... My hopes were in vain. To sum up, this is only recommendable if you have problems to get to sleep!
