Young Adult (2011)
CREEPY
Radiohead's hit 'Creep' seems to have inspired this whole movie. The main character is the definition of a creep and then there's another character that tags along with her that is a weirdo. It all makes sense now.
The best thing about this movie has to be Theron's performance. She's a great actress with obviously the most intriguing personality and makes the movie entertaining enough to not move from your seat.
However, I think the movie lacks from becoming truly interesting. The plot becomes boring and predictable after the first 20 minutes and the evolution is considerably slow.
It is far from being a great movie but thankfully it is not that long that you find yourself you can't even bear one more second of it. Instead it is quite appealing from the main's character pov and you find yourself wanting to know more about her.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
An average spy flick
First of all, I want to declare that I went to see this movie in ignorance of the original film so this review may not be useful to those who have seen the first film. Do not worry if you haven't seen the first one because the movie explains a bit of what happened before the main character became Kingsman and it is easy to follow.
The story is summarized in two elite secret organizations which must band together to defeat a common enemy that wants to take over the world.
In a nutshell, I found it to be quite a plain movie with predictable twists and basic plot. I got already bored past the first hour of the movie and even though it as decent I just kept wishing the end was near.
There were many things that didn't work out for me including the lack of catchy lines, wit references and clever cultural jokes which leads to forceful laughs. However, what really saddens me is the lack of character development as they had great actors on their hands and could've taken much more advantage of them but for some reason they decided not to. I didn't even felt moved when strong emotionally charged scenes took place.
The only thing that may have saved this movie from being a total let down is the fact that has some cool action scenes mixed with a great cast whose performances are unfortunately limited because of their obvious script. In addition to this, I enjoyed the British scenery and the way they linked and compared it with the American culture. It is visually satisfying. Also, in the running of the movie you get used to the vulgar humour that you actually find yourself falling for the childish wordplay.
To sum up, I do not regret the choice I made to watch this movie and even though it is clearly flawed it is still decent and I would recommend it to watch it a Sunday afternoon if you want to slightly entertain yourself and basically kill the time.
Pretty Little Liars (2010)
It NEVER gets better
Here it is to one of the most cringe-watching and poorly developed TV shows I've ever seen.
I watched the first and second season and I liked it. It was a fresh teen show with drama and lots of mystery (which is what made me addicted to it) but after the second season it seems to me that there was no room for improvement.
In my opinion, the show gets worse season after season for many reasons. First, the plot stops making any sense and becomes terribly confusing just for the sake to "surprise" you but it doesn't. It is just plain annoying. Secondly, the acting becomes monotonous, it never really was that good, but when the dialogue and story line become increasingly boring, it stands out the lack of acting skills of some of the main characters. For me, it seems as if the actors' kind of get burned out and deal their acting with conformity (which I don't think they could make it up for all the amount of silences and unsubstantial dialogue). Third, the budget isn't that well executed as the production becomes deplorable. It really does with its green screens, same landscape and it's camera stops and turns that last too long. Fourth and last, in my most humble opinion, the show sends the wrong message to teen girls as it gives too much importance to the looks and image of the characters that pretty much look as "dolls meet reality" and gets way superficial sometimes. In addition to this, I may also point out that it's not that bad because even though their background message is "looks are important", they really try to sell you that "looks aren't everything" which is nice to see if you don't look closer.
To conclude, I wouldn't recommend the show as there are so many better ones to choose that are worthy of your time. However, I firmly believe that it could be a good idea to give it a try if you like teen drama with mystery involved.
