Hereditary (2018)
So incredibly genius
This is one of the smartest films I have ever seen. Not only is the writing, staging, acting, costuming, etc. Incredibly meticulous, but the care to combine all of the elements to hint at the story while misleading us is phenomenal. I would suggest everyone watch Novum's deep dive on YouTube to see everything that went over my head and probably other people's. Toni Collete not winning an Oscar for this is criminal. This is incredible horror in the same vain as Get Out and The Shining if not a bit more. This type of horror that I won't reveal typically does not scare me, but the way this story is so meticulous breaks my typical reaction.
Judge Steve Harvey (2022)
Entertaining
This show is a guilty pleasure. It's entertaining to watch when I need a good pick me up. There was one young lady I kept seeing in the background I really enjoyed, brown curls and green sweater spotted in the first and third episode. I really hope production keeps bringing her back because her reactions were awesome and she's very pretty! Keep an eye out for her, she's maybe around 20 years old.
(I am a friend of the actress I described. I realize how it sounds very creepy if someone doesn't know that. But you should keep an eye out for her!)
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
Possibly my favorite "season" of the series
Similar to the ratings, this mini series is a close second of the "seasons", following season four. I love the setting. I love the characters. I love the casting. I love the brilliance and care within the plot and portrayal of characters.
I absolutely love how Jack Alcott incorporated the mannerisms of Michael C. Hall. When Harrison eats, you can tell he's Dexter's son. It's interesting to see how much Dexter has lost his touch through his PG-13 years. That makes the show a bit more fun to watch. I love Clancy Brown (Lt. Hank for the real ones), and his portrayal of Kurt. Kurt really kept me on my toes.
And don't even get me started in Angela discovering Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher! Blew my mind. Genius. Major applause that everyone who worked on New Blood. Thank you for returning for this mini-series.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
Beautiful ending with a few questionable aspects
I loved this ending. Very poetic, very fitting for the characters, and I think this is the closure we need. Even though I almost cried over fictional characters.
I understand Harrison is a teenager who has experienced a lot of trauma. His wishy-washyness makes sense. What doesn't make a lot of sense to me is a father who loves his son basically forcing his son to kill him. I understand it's poetic, but a father who loves their child would not inflict that trauma upon them. He would have turned himself in. At least, I think he would have. Or ended his own life instead of making Harrison do it.
Also, why is Harrison still on the wrestling team?? He's lucky he wasn't expelled and arrested, so why did they give him a letterman's jacket after breaking another kid's arm intentionally and unnecessarily. Just a few things left me wondering some logistics. Realistically, I would give this episode a 9.5/10, but I can't do that. Ultimately, this is an ending we needed. An ending I love, and the ending Dexter wanted for himself.
My final complaint, which really isn't a big deal, is that I wish they would have incorporated the original Intro scene revised to fit Iron Lake. Y'know, Dexter slapping the fly, making the ham, and getting ready for the day.
The Stepfather (2009)
Obviously written by men who know nothing about women
I love Penn Badgley, so when I saw this movie I was excited to watch it! The plot sounded very interesting. But I was much more frustrated by this movie than horrified by it. First of all, STOP SEXUALIZING HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS. The close up shots of the young woman in bikinis is disgusting. If a movie must include objectification of women for it's profit, at least make them college aged or older. That was the most horrifying part of the film and makes the writers/director look disgusting. Second of all, in what world do women not suspect men of being murderers? All of the women are stupid and oblivious which is the completely opposite of reality. Guess what!? Women are predominately murdered by men, so they know to be aware of the men around them. The mom, neighbor, aunt, and girlfriend are all overly stupid, so the beloved teenage son can come to the rescue. As if. So unrealistic and misogynistic. Plot was idiotic with the amount of dumb mistakes the characters made. The ending was horrible. No judgement to the actresses and actors in this film, I'm sure I would have taken the opportunity too, but the writers and directors should have known better. But this is the majority of films from the early 2000s, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
The Perfection (2018)
MASSIVE trigger warning should have been included
The first half of the movie is amazing, albeit a bit predictable. But enjoyable with an interesting plot. After returning to America, it majorly goes down hill. Once again, another horror movie exploiting sexual assault against women to make money. With no trigger warning, and VERY disturbing content. Anton using Zhang Li to threaten Charlotte, threatening to sexually assault a child is absolutely disgusting. The scene where they lead you to believe Lizzie is assaulting Charlotte with her arm is horrendous. Made me want to vomit and turn off the movie. It strays GREATLY from the trailer on Netflix in a disgusting way. I understand wanting a twist, but putting that sort of plot on people who don't have the opportunity to choose whether or not to view it is cruel and exploitive.
