Really well directed horror

The film feels very Michael Powell-esque. Some really terrific editing and creative set pieces. An all round great horror film for the holiday season.

Ancient Rome has never looked more interesting. Another triumph from Fellini, despite paper thin characters.

Terrific, if not a bit Schmaltzy

Some of the best war scenes ever filmed. It gets overly sentimental at the end which keeps it from being a 10/10.

A Modern Fairy Tale
11 December 2018
This is a weird one, in a good way. The closest thing I could compare it to is Eraserhead or Basketcase, and much like those films it's best viewed not knowing anything about it going in. Definitely a lot of growth here for writer John Lindqvist of 'Let the Right One In' fame. He really knows how to create a modern fairy tale through minimalism and his Swedish sensibilities really translate well for this story. All the performances here are terrific, especially the lead actress. I was also blown away by the prosthetic work, it's some of the best I've ever seen. Accolades aside I thought the cinematography left much to be desired and the story to be a bit predictable at points. Definitely not a film for everyone, and I'd have a hard time recommending it to most.

Probably the best teen film ever made

Probably the best teen film ever made. Really terrific performances and an interesting structure thematically. The film really captures the amount of importance and weight every situation feels like it has when a teenager.

Terrific and profound
11 December 2018
Probably one of the more enlightening and profound films I've seen in quite a while. The film revolves around a conversation had over dinner between two playwrights with a rather different outlook on meaninglessness and the absurdity of the day to day. In an almost uncanny way the film predicts our furthered obsession with comforts and rejection of science, it's really fascinating at how much it accurately predicts about the way we "live" in the 21st century. If I had any complaints I think the editing and cinematography gets a bit monotonous after a while, I broke up my viewing into two sittings. Quite a lot of thought provoking and meaningful ideas here that are far too numerous to get into without seeing it for yourself.
